Notes |
- Emperor of Rome in the West 367-383, Gratian was the oldest son of theRoman Emperor Valentinian I, who ruled the Empire with his brother Valens(Valentinian ruled the West). In 367, Gratian was made co-Emperor withhim in the West. When Valentinian died in 375, Gratian was the sole-rulerof the West, reigning with his infant brother Valentinian II. When hisuncle Valens died in 378, Gratian felt himself unable to rule both halvesof the Roman Empire, so he placed the soldier Theodosius I in the East.Gratian was unpopular with the people due to his persecution ofnon-Christians, being an orthodox Christian himself. Therefore whenMagnus Clemens Maximus was proclaimed Emperor in Britain in 383,Gratian's troops deserted him for the new Emperor. In battle, Maximusdefeated Gratian soundly, and he was killed that year while trying toflee.
