  1. 1.  Ralph 1St Baron BASSET, Of Sapcote, Sir was born about 1329 in Sapcote, Hinckley, Leicestershire, England (son of Ralph BASSET, Of Sapcote, Sir and Sibyl ASTLEY); died on 17 Jul 1378 in Bytham Castle, Bourne, Lincolnshire, England (Dspm).

    Notes:

BARONY of BASSET (of Sapcote) (I)

RALPH BASSET, son and heir, under age in 1330. In July 1369, being then aged over 40, he became, by the death of his cousin, Robert, Lord Colvill one of the two coheirs of the estates and Barony of that family, inheriting the Castle and Honour of Bytham, co. Lincoln, Thornton Steward, co. York, &C. In consequence, doubtless, of these acquisitions, he was summoned to Parliament 8 January 1370/1 and 6 October 1372, by writs directed Radulfo Basset de Sapcote, whereby he is held to have become LORD BASSET. He fought in the French wars and was one of the heroes of Crecy.

He married 1stly, about 1346, Sibyl, sister of Thomas ASTLEY [3rd LORD ASTLEY], and daughter of Sir Giles Astley, by Alice, 2nd daughter and coheir of Sir Thomas DE WOLVEY. He married, 2ndly, Alice, daughter of John DERBY. He died s.p.m., 17 July 1378, when the Barony fell (according to modern doctrine) into abeyance between his two daughters and coheirs. Will, as Ralph Basset, knight, Lord of Sapcote, directing his burial to be at Castle Bytham, dated there the Monday after the Ascension I I May 1377, proved at Lincoln. His widow, who married Sir Robert TUCHET, and afterwards Sir Anketine MALLORY, died a widow, 12 October 1412, and was buried at Stamford, near her last husband. [Complete Peerage II:7-8, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

Note: I disagree with CP in this situation. Due to the fact that Sibyl was born before 1317 (and probably earlier), I think that Sibyl and Ralph were the mother and father of this Ralph, and were born well before 1346.

Ralph married Alice De DRIBY about 1365 in 2ND Husband, 2ND Wife. Alice was born about 1340 in Wokefield, Stratfield Mortimer, Berkshire, England; died on 12 Oct 1412 in Stamford, Lincolnshire, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. Jane BASSET was born about 1368 in Glastonbury, Wells, Somerset, England; died before 1394.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Ralph BASSET, Of Sapcote, Sir was born about 1310 in Sapcote, Hinckley, Leicestershire, England (son of Simon BASSET, Of Sapcote, Sir and Isabel BOTELER); and died.

    Notes:

The Complete Peerage does not have this Ralph in its ancestry. They claim that the Ralph, b. 1329, married as his 1st wife, abt 1346, Sybil Astley, daughter of Giles Astley, who d. 1316. At best you would have a 17 year old boy marrying a 30+ (most likely 35-40) year old woman; not very likely at all. Therefore I envision two generations where CP has one. I believe that this Ralph m. (long before 1346, which is when CP says the marriage took place) Sybil Astley and had the Ralph who was a minor in 1349.

Of course Ralph could have been born as early as 1310, married Sybil for the 1st time at age 36 (1346) and married again at 51 (1361) and had children. I think that genealogy, even the well respected sources, are too full of really old men having children. It seems to be the rule rather than the exception. The average life expectancy in the middle ages was in the mid to lower 40's which was considered old age. While men can have children in their 80's, I think it is the exception rather than the rule for men after the age of 50 having children.

Ralph married Sibyl ASTLEY. Sibyl was born about 1310 in Astley, Nuneaton, Warwickshire, England; died before 1360. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Sibyl ASTLEY was born about 1310 in Astley, Nuneaton, Warwickshire, England; died before 1360.

He [Ralph Basset] married 1stly, about 1346, Sibyl, sister of Thomas ASTLEY [3rd LORD ASTLEY], and daughter of Sir Giles Astley, by Alice, 2nd daughter and coheir of Sir Thomas DE WOLVEY. [Complete Peerage II:7-8, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

Note: As I stated in the notes under Ralph: I have a different, younger Ralph marrying Sibyl at a much earlier date than CP does. Sibyl had to be born bef. 1317 because her father died in 1316. I don't think she m. for the 1st time in 1346, nor do I think Ralph, born about the same time, would wait so long either.

He married 1stly, Elizabeth, 1st daughter and in her issue coheir of Roger COLVILL, [LORD COLVILL] by Margaret, daughter of Sir Richard BREWES. He married 2ndly shortly before 21 July 1295, Margaret, widow of Urian DE ST. PIERRE of Peckforton, Horsley, &c., co. Chester. He is said to have died 1322. Note: With her mother Margaret the daughter of a "bef 9 Sep 1265" marriage and her son "b. bef 1295" when Elizabeth was presumably dead and Ralph was marrying for the 2nd time, there is not a lot of room for variation in the birth dates of the three inidividuals: (1) 1265 for Margaret, which is the earliest possible given the marriage date; (2) 1280 for Elizabeth, which splits the difference and has two women in a row bearing children at the age of 15; (3) abt 1295 for the son Simon, which is the latest possible. It also means that poor Elizabeth had a very short life; I would guess that she probably died in child birth having her son Simon.
