    --------------------

Agnes was imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1541 (with her son Lord William Howard and Margaret his wife, and her daughter the Countess of Bridgewater), and attainted for misprision of treason in concealing the 'evil life' of her step-granddaughter, Katherine Howard, before her marriage to the King Henry VIII. "Agnes Howard, duches of Norff' of Lambeth" was buried testate at Thetford Abbey on 31 May 1545. [Plantagenet Ancestry, Faris]

Note: I don't have a source yet for Hugh's parents. Most have him brother of Frederick. Given that Frederick had an only daughter Elizabeth as heir, Hugh is probably his brother, not son (as I originally had him).

    BARONY OF KYME (VIII) 1472

SIR ROBERT TAILBOYS, of Kyme, son and heir, aged 40 at his mother's death in 1491. Notes:

According to both Ancestral Roots & Magna Charta Sureties, probably referring to the citation by The Complete Peerage given below , there is no evidence that Elizabeth is daughter of Sir John Heron & Elizabeth Heron, whom I have as her parents. They do not state that she is not a daughter, just that there is no evidence; therefore I am placing her as their daughter, without evidence, based on numerous people in World Connect who have done so and the citation from CP.

Note: Elizabeth's father John Heron & Robert's father William Tailboys held Croydon Manor together, so there was a family connection.

    BARONY OF KYME (VII) 1444

SIR WILLIAM TAILBOYS, of Kyme, co. Lincoln, de jure LORD KYME, son and heir, born circa 1415, being aged 28 at his father's death. He had licence, 8 January 1444, for an oratory within his dwelling in the diocese of Lincoln. He is called the "King's esquire" 7 June 1444, when Harbottle Castle was restored to him. From 1441 onwards he was a justice of the Peace in Lincolnshire and in Northumberland. He supported Croyland Abbey in a dispute with Thomas Dacre concerning Whaplode. Here, and later, in official records, up to 1460, he is called "esquire," but, apparently in consequence of having inherited the castle and estate of Kyme, he was generally known as the "Earl of Kyme." He gave a release, 2 April 1446, as Lord of Reddesdale and of Kyme. In 1448 he and his servants were charged with many outrages in Lincolnshire, and he was imprisoned in the Marshalsea, his pardon being procured by the Duke of Suffolk, whose adherent. he was. On 10 October 1449 he was appointed a Commissioner in an inquiry in co. Lincoln. Later he was accused of having made an attempt to murder Ralph, Lord Cromwell, in the Star Chamber at Westminster on 28 November 1449. On 18 February 1458/9 be was appointed a Commissioner of Array in Lincolnshire and on 19 February 1460/1 was knighted at the battle of St. Albans, where, as at Towton on 29 March following, he fought on the Lancastrian side. On 14 May 1461 the new King, Edward IV, ordered Kyme and other manors of William Tailboys, knight, to be taken into his hand, the said William being a rebel and adherent of the King's enemies of France and Scotland. On 26 June following he took part in a Lancastrian assembly in Durham and in August was with Queen Margaret in Scotland. On 4 November 1461 he was attainted, whereby all his honours became forfeited. He was Captain of Alnwick Castle for Henry VI when it was besieged in July 1462, and surrendered it on condition of life and property being spared. He fought on the Lancastrian side at the battle of Hexham, 15 May 1464, and, escaping after the defeat, was captured in a coal pit near Newcastle (or in Redesdale, according to one account) towards the end of the month, and beheaded.

He married Elizabeth, daughter of William, LORD BONVILLE. He died at Newcastle-on-Tyne, circa 26 May 1464, and was buried in the Grey Friars at Newcastle. His widow, who was allowed one-third of his lands in December 1464, died 14 February 1490/1. [Complete Peerage VII:359-61, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

William married Elizabeth BONVILLE. Elizabeth (daughter of Baron William BONVILLE, Of Chewton, Kg, Sir and Margaret De GREY) was born about 1420 in Shute, Axminster, Devonshire, England; died on 14 Feb 1490-1491. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Sir John Heron, Knight, son of William and Isabel (Scott) Heron, b. 1415/18, Sheriff of Northumberland 1440-1441, 1451-1452, 1456-57, slain at battle of Towton, 29 Mar 1461. [Ancestral Roots]

Note: WRONG! AR is using CP VI:488-489 as part of its source on this. If one reads CP, they say John was son of a different William Heron and Isabel (last name unknown). The William Heron AR refers to (who did m. Isabel Scott, and was Elizabeth's grandfather), d. 10 Nov 1400, while John's father William Heron, d. 20 Jan 1427/8. This misled me for some time.

    -----------------------------------------------------

She [Elizabeth Heron] m. (disp. 11 July 1438) John, son of her guardian, William Heron aforesaid, by his wife Isabel. John was 10 or 13 years of age in 1428 and then in ward to the King. John and Elizabeth had livery of their lands in Northamptonshire and Elandshire from the Bishop of Durham in 140-41, and, having entered on the other lands of their inheritance without due livery, received the King's pardon in 1449. As "John Heron esq." he was appointed one of the Keepers of Bamborough Castle in 1438, assisting Sir William Elmedon, and in 1448 became sole Keeper on Elmedon's death; in 1459 John's son Roger became joint Keeper with him. He was thrice Sheriff of Northumberland, in 1440-41, 1451-52, and 1456-57. His authority in Redesdale is shown by a letter of apology addressed to him by the Prior of Durham in 1446; in 1455, as "Sir John Heron of Ford, kt.," he, with Robert Manners, "esq.," was thanked by the Privy Council for diligence in resisting the Scots' attack on Berwick. He filled many public offices in the district, being Commissioner of array, justice, &c., down to 1460. He fought on the Lancastrian side in the Wars of the Roses, and was slain at the battle of Towton, 29 March 1461. For having taken part in the execution of Richard, Duke of York, at Wakefield, 30 December 1460, he was attainted, and all his estates and dignities were forfeited, including the manor of Croydon, co. Cambridge, held by him jointly with William Tailboys. Robert Ogle was ordered to take possession of Ford Castle and to seize the body of Roger, Sir John's son and heir. [Complete Peerage VI:488-9, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

The following post by Chris Phillips to soc.genealogy.medieval indicates that CP is incorrect in its ancestry for John's father William. Instead of William (d. 1427/8), son of William, son of William (d. 1379), it is William (d. 1427/8), son of John (d. 1408), son of John, son of William (d. 1379) (ie. the middle William is replaced by two Johns).

I have placed some draft corrections to the Complete Peerage article on Heron at:
    http://www.medievalgenealogy.org.uk/cp/HeronCorrections.shtml

These are the outcome of several months' discussion with Tony Ingham and Rosie Bevan.

I should make it clear that it was Tony who came up with the corrected genealogical scheme, and most of the supporting evidence from primary sources, and Rosie provided further evidence and discussion. I have tried to supplement the evidence from London sources as far as possible.

The main genealogical correction concerns the ancestry of John Heron (killed 1461), who married Elizabeth, daughter and heir of William Heron (d. 1425) (Sir William being the son of William (d. 1400), the son of Roger (d. by 1400), the eldest son of William (d. 1379)).

John was certainly the son of William Heron (killed 1427/8). CP identifies this William as a son of William, the second son of William Heron (d. 1379). But the evidence shows that he was in fact the son of John Heron (d. 1408), who was in all probability the son of John, the third son of William (d. 1379). (Just possibly John (d. 1408) was identical with William's son John, although this seems chronologically unlikely.)

Comments, criticisms and corrections will be welcomed.

No evidence that the Elizabeth Heron who m. Sir Robert Tailboys is their daughter. Hedley's "Northumberland Families" shows no daughter Elizabeth. [Magna Charta Sureties]
