One folded, torn, and time-worn piece of paper was found inside the Guilford Dudley and Elizabeth (Wallace) Read Bible with notes written in pencil. It was copied as written by Mary Jane (Hunter) Read's hand including spelling and grammatical errors. Willliam was the oldest of 11 children. He was in the Civil War as a Confederate cavalry soldier, and was one of Morgan's Raiders. He was captured on the Ohio River and was a prisoner of war at Camp Morton, near Indianapolis, and then sent on to Camp Douglass on the south side of Chicago. Amanda bore him three sons, with descendants from the two elder boys and the youngest son was alive through 1880, where further info on him cannot be found yet. Amanda died in 1864, six months before her husband was paroled by the Yankees, leaving her three sons as wards of her father-in-law. Her husband remarried five years after her death, but he had no other children. (Info from Linda Chesser of Indiana)

Notes contributed by Linda Read Chesser:
I have carefully transcribed the Bible belonging to Guilford Dudley and Elizabeth (Wallace) Read. They were married in Davidson County TN in 1826, where all eleven of their children were born. Their oldest son, William Benjamin Read (1829-1904), served in the CSA as a cavalry soldier in Ward's 9th at the Battle of Hartsville and rode with General Morgan. He was captured in 1863, on the Ohio and imprisoned at Camps Morton (Indianapolis) and Douglass (Chicago). Released in June 1865, he came home to find his wife had died 6 months before, leaving his three sons as guardians of Guilford Read Sr. The families moved to Sumner County after the Civil War, first residing in Gallatin and then moving to land southwest of Richland Station (now Portland). Their youngest son was Opie Pope Read (1852-1939), American Novelist and Humorist, who studied at Neophogen College in Gallatin, founded The Arkansas Traveler in Little Rock and was author of 57 books and numerous short stories. He had met Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) on the Chautauqua circuit and later would travel that road himself. He wrote for the Cleveland Plain Dealer and worked until his death for a paper in Chicago. Portland's Elmer Hinton Public Library has a portrait of Opie Read and a few of his novels on display.

The Opie Pope family had a business across the street from the Read's carriage shop in Nashville in the 1850's, hence the name. Percival was made up as were many of his stories about the family. Parents supplied by Merry Anne; maptfs, Nashville Tennessee (Ancestry Profile);
"From my research, Isaac E Morris was born ca 1800 in TN. His mother was Mary Elizabeth Earthman who married Andrew Morris 24 Dec 1799 in Davidson CO, TN. Her father was Isaac Earthman Jr born ca 1749 prob. Bucks Co, PA died in 1834 in Davidson Co, TN a Rev. War Soldier. His will names his daughter "Betsy's" children, but not by name. But court records indicate there were at least two, Isaac E whose widow was Calista Carney and Peter B. who married Nancy Marlin.Peter and Isaac owned property together and were involved in several cases of slave sales related to the Earthman will. When Isaac died, Peter sold his share of property jointly owned to his sister - in- law, Calista. Peter died in 1855 after serving the county for many years as a Justice of the Peace. He had 5 living children. I can only locate the son, Isaac Taylor Morris. I'm trying to locate the others. And would like to find Andrew Morris's parents."
Isaac married Celestia (Calista) Goldsberry CARNEY on 2 Feb 1826 in Davidson County, Tennessee. Celestia (daughter of Elijah CARNEY and Elizabeth Seale GOLDSBERRY) was born about 1807 in Davidson County, Tennessee; died in 1862 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
