From Journal of John, which is held by Melba Halbrook [email protected] John Gullage and his wife Nancy McCall Gullage were moving. They had farmed and worked in the area around Cheraw and Society Hill, South Carolina for more than thirty years. This area on the North and South Carolina border had many pioneer Scotch families but many had moved to new lands in the West.... John and Nancy left Society Hill, South Carolina at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, Nov. 11, 1847 and arrived near Jaynesville, Mississippi on December 24, 1847. The journal accounts for each day and each place they stayed on that memorable trip to Mississippi.

McCall's came from Scotland and arrived in Wilmington, NC in 1791. John McCall, born in 1741, was the first of the McCall family; he had a son named Duncan who had a daughter named Nancy who married John Gullage.
