    Paul J. Carney,77, Topeka, passed away on Thursday, April 27, 2006 at Midland Hospice House.

    Paul was born January 18, 1929 in Junction City, the son of Jesse M. and Pauline J. (Strauss) Carney.

    Paul married Mary Lou Scucchi on April 15, 1950 in Topeka.

    He was employed as a painter at Goodyear, retiring in 1988. Following retirement, they moved to Las Vegas where he was a member of the Lamb of God Lutheran Church and sang in the men's choir. They returned to Topeka in 2002. Paul was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and active in choir.

    Survivors include his wife of the home; their children, Steven Carney, Danville, Virginia, Sharon Haigh, Manhattan, Diana Arnold, John Carney, Daryl Carney and Janet Whitaker, all of Topeka; brothers, James Carney, Champagne, Illinois, Ted Carney, Topeka; a sister, Evelyn Costigan, Olathe; 14 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

    He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Carney, and brother-in-law, Lloyd Costigan.

    Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 1, 2006 at Faith Lutheran Church. Mr. Carney will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday and visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

    Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel's Memorial Park Cemetery.

    Year: 1930; Census Place: Junction, Geary, Kansas; Roll: 702; Page: ; Enumeration District: 7; Proved birth was in Maryland. ALSO father (James H. Carney) found in 1920 Census with Jesse then aged 16, shown to be born in Maryland - the only child born out of Tennessee.

    Death Certificate: It shows Jesse's father as being James H. Carney and mother Kizzie May Oliphant. Cause of death was carcinoma (cancer) of lung at 7:45pm on 25 Dec 1965. His occupation is listed as Accountant. Place of his birth is listed as Baltimore, Maryland. Shows he was in the Army from 1921 to 1936. He died in the State Pulmonary Disease Hosp. in Butte and the length of stay was 215 days.

    He is buried in Mountain View Cemetery, 3910 Harrison Avenue, Butte, MT 59701 - Phone: 406-494-2504. The inscription on his tombstone, besides his name, date of birth (11 Feb 1904) and date of death, was "MONT. CPL, 33RD INFANTRY REGT., WWI".

    Notes:

    My great-grandfather James Henry Carney came from a line of Carneys that resided from about 1812 in the Big Marrowbone Creek area of Cheatham County where it borders with Davidson County. There were also several of this Carney line who lived in Dickson County.

    James Henry Carney's death certificate indicates the cause of his death was "Lobar Pneumonia, type undetermined." He is buried in Section T, Row 15, Grave 74 in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

    Occupation listed: Trade-Moulder in Industry-Gray & Doudley, mother Martha Stewart, spouse Pearl Carney at death. Died of Pneumonia.

    Found in 1900 Census at age 19, as James Conroy (Carney), wife Kissie (Kizzie) and daughter Etta. Name is inturpreted incorrectly as Conroy by transcription, as Carney is the intent of Census taker.

    Notes:

    This line of Oliphants is known to have resided in Dickson County as well as in Rutherford and Williamson Counties.

    Kizzie May's death certificate indicates her death at such an early age was caused by "Asphyxia" contributed to by "Laryngeal Diphtheria." She is buried in Section N, Row 3, Grave 30 in Spring Hill Cemetery. It seems a shame that Kizzie died of diphtheria when that illness is easily taken care of now days.
