    11 January 2020 email from Eva: Evelyn Carney Costigan was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, it has also spread to her liver, lungs and spine so there is nothing that can be done except keep her as comfortable as possible. She is at home and Greg has taken off work to be there for her. This is very hard for him as you can imagine as they are very close. Lou Ann is still with Evelyn but isn't in the best of health now either.

    Evelyn had downsized and moved into a new one-level condo only a few months ago. She turned 87 Dec. 11, 2020. Lou Ann will be 56 Jan. 28.

    Update 23 January 2021: Evelyn passed away from pancreatic cancer this past Tuesday, January 19th under hospice care at home. She had turned 87 on Dec. 11, 2020. She had just been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer less than two months ago and had just moved into a new condo less than a year ago. Evelyn was the last of Pauline (Strauss) Hoyle's immediate family.

    Year: 1930; Census Place: Junction, Geary, Kansas; Roll: 702; Page: ; Enumeration District: 7; Proved birth was in Maryland. ALSO father (James H. Carney) found in 1920 Census with Jesse then aged 16, shown to be born in Maryland - the only child born out of Tennessee.

    Death Certificate: It shows Jesse's father as being James H. Carney and mother Kizzie May Oliphant. Cause of death was carcinoma (cancer) of lung at 7:45pm on 25 Dec 1965. His occupation is listed as Accountant. Place of his birth is listed as Baltimore, Maryland. Shows he was in the Army from 1921 to 1936. He died in the State Pulmonary Disease Hosp. in Butte and the length of stay was 215 days.

    He is buried in Mountain View Cemetery, 3910 Harrison Avenue, Butte, MT 59701 - Phone: 406-494-2504. The inscription on his tombstone, besides his name, date of birth (11 Feb 1904) and date of death, was "MONT. CPL, 33RD INFANTRY REGT., WWI".

    Notes:

    My great-grandfather James Henry Carney came from a line of Carneys that resided from about 1812 in the Big Marrowbone Creek area of Cheatham County where it borders with Davidson County. There were also several of this Carney line who lived in Dickson County.

    James Henry Carney's death certificate indicates the cause of his death was "Lobar Pneumonia, type undetermined." He is buried in Section T, Row 15, Grave 74 in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

    Occupation listed: Trade-Moulder in Industry-Gray & Doudley, mother Martha Stewart, spouse Pearl Carney at death. Died of Pneumonia.

    Found in 1900 Census at age 19, as James Conroy (Carney), wife Kissie (Kizzie) and daughter Etta. Name is inturpreted incorrectly as Conroy by transcription, as Carney is the intent of Census taker.

    Notes:

    This line of Oliphants is known to have resided in Dickson County as well as in Rutherford and Williamson Counties.

    Kizzie May's death certificate indicates her death at such an early age was caused by "Asphyxia" contributed to by "Laryngeal Diphtheria." She is buried in Section N, Row 3, Grave 30 in Spring Hill Cemetery. It seems a shame that Kizzie died of diphtheria when that illness is easily taken care of now days.

    Elijah W. Carney married Mary Emma Brown b. 1843 Williamson Co. TN, a daughter of John G. and Martha E.(-?-) Brown, on 06 Nov 1867 in Davidson Co. TN. They had a daughter Lena Eoleen Carney abt. 1869. Lena lived with her widowed grandmother Martha E. Brown before marrying Thomas Edward Frensley on 21 Feb 1889 Davidson Co. TN. Thomas E. and Lena Carney Frensley had fraternal twins in 1900, Ethel and Earl Frensley. Lena Carney Frensley was buried in David Read's lot, Sec 15 in Nashville's City Cemetery on 02 Jun 1942. Her grandfather John G. Brown was also buried in Read's lot on 02 Dec 1875.

    Elijah divorced Emma Brown and then married Martha Ann Stewart (both marriages documented in Tennessee State Marriages) and 3 months after wedding, Lena was born to first wife Emma.

    Died young at age 49, 20 years after war end in 1885. After his death, his cousin John Spencer Carney helped out Marth Ann "Mattie" get by without the income lost due to Elijah's early death. Robert S. Carney writes to me in May 2021:
    "I went through an odd assortment of paper scraps left by our great grandfather John Spencer Carney. I found a few tax receipts ~1895 where he had paid land taxes for a Mrs. E. W. Carney who owned 40 acres."

    Elijah W. Carney died young at age 49. After his death, his cousin John Spencer Carney helped out Marth Ann "Mattie" get by without the income lost due to Elijah's early death. Robert S. Carney writes to me in May 2021:
    "I went through an odd assortment of paper scraps left by our great grandfather John Spencer Carney. I found a few tax receipts ~1895 where he had paid land taxes for a Mrs. E. W. Carney who owned 40 acres."

    An obituary from the October 18, 1888 Junction City Tribune and the cemetery records for him, show that Johann Strauss died of Typhoid Fever at the age of 56 years on Friday, October 12, 1888. He was buried in Highland Cemetery in Junction City the following day, Saturday, October 13 at 4:00pm.

    Came to America with 3 children and wife Maria. Johann died less than 3 years later. Maria Strauss then remarried and had 3 more children with Christian Jacob.
