    Notes:

    In 1718 he was living on a tract of land along the border of Essex, and King and Queen counties, Virginia. On 21 June 1722 a suit brought against him by Thomas Waring was dismissed. About this time one of his Negro boys ran away and was taken up by Thomas Barker. In 1724 he served on a jury and also gave evidence for Nicholas Davis in suit against John Pickett. On 21 August 1728 judgment was granted against him in favor of Thomas Waring, Sheriff of Essex County.

    Joseph Collins of Essex County, planter, on 16-17 May 1737 sold to Nicholas Pampline a tract of 200 acres in Essex and King and Queen counties. He was then preparing to move to Spotsylvania County, where he had settled by 17 January 1738/39 when the Essex County Court ordered that Philip Gatewood pay him 495 pounds of tobacco for twice coming and returning seven miles from Spotsylvania County and for attending three days as an evidence for him against Thomas Johnson in a suit for assault
    and battery.

    1650: William Berkley grants to John Oliver 300 acres on Blackwater pointing towards Lower Chippoakes Creek, being in the county of Surry, joining upon Beaver Dam and bounded by Thomas Davis , July 2, 1650. 1665: John Collins, son of William of Maidstone, England, married Eleanor Oliver, daughter of John Oliver, as seen by the will of John Oliver, filed in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia. 1666: John Collins, who married Eleanor daughter of John Oliver, with her consent assigns to George Branch one half of patent on January 5, 1666. John Wakefield who married the youngest daughter of John Oliver assigns the other 150 acres to George Branch . Source: LDS.

    Notes:

    Eleanor's father, John Oliver, was bound for England when he made his will on April 19, 1652 (recorded June 16, 1655) and evidently never returned from England. He mentions wife Ellen and gave his son John and two daughters land at Blackwater (Book 2-79) . Gov. Berkeley had granted John Oliver 300 acres on the Blackwater on July 2, 1650 (Book 17c-541). On January 5, 1666, John Collins who married Eleanor, daughter of John Oliver, and John Wake field who married Mary, youngest daughter of John Oliver, deeded (with their wife's consent) this 300 acres to John Branch.

    William Collins, age 20, sailed for Virginia in 1635, departing London on May 15, 1635 on the "Plain Joane", Richard Buckam, Master. On the passenger list, there is another William Collins, age 34. Ref: List of Immigrants to America 1600-1700 by Hotten, pps. 78-79.

    William married Ann Wilds, widow of Thomas Wilds, in 1665 in Isle of Wight County. Later after William died, the administer of W illiam's estate was Alexander Murray, who married Ann King Wilds Collins. Ann stated that her two young daughters were to live with their uncle Robert King when she died. Source: World Family Tree Vol. 11, Tree 0778.

    Notes:

    John Collins of Maidstone was granted life rights as keeper of the Gael of Maidstone, which he passed on to his son John Jr. in his will. "The right was granted by King Charles 1st". It was a position of power and influence. John Collins Jr. came to Virginia Colony in 1655, twenty years after his son William. He came after King Charles 1st. had been executed by supporters of Parliment. As an adherent of the King, John jr. sought safety in Virginia, and was known as one of the group called Cavaliers. The family held positions of importance and were prosperous land owners in Virginia.John Collins Jr. came to Surry Co. VA, and soon after his arrival he married Elizabeth Caufield. so his first wife, mother of William, must have died before he left England. Elizabeth was the daughter of William and Dorcus Caufield, and William Caufield had sponsored John'spassage from England. Elizabeth had one brother, Captain Robert Caufield, who is listed as the only heir in her parent's will. When John Jr. died, his will recorded in Surry County listed only one child, William who had come to Virginia in 1635.
