    Notes:

    2nd Born.
Came to America when 15 years old (March 1913) and went to live with cousins near Chicago sometime after his mother died in 1904. Living in 1917 at 7018 Justine, Chicago, Illinois.
Came from Pinkamiske, Vas, Hungary that was later known as Mischendorf, Burgenland, Austria after World War I (1917). Area comprises Germanic, Croatian and Hungarian heritages in area commonly known as Burgenland, Austria. Past Wehofers were known prior to 1850's as Vehhofers, but common spelling uniformly changed to Wehofer over 20-30 years, in nearly all families. Generations of Wehofers have spread over a relatively small area, with the highest concentrations in descending order: Wien (Vienna) Austria (30%), Mischendorf (6%), Rust (5%), Yspertac (3%), Tadten (3%), and so forth to lesser concentrations.

Paul is an Americanised name spelling (originally Pal in Hungarian), upon coming to the USA. Paul married Clara and they operated a small limited bakery in the Chicago area for a few years during the wartime 40's. When they moved the family to Alpena, they started a larger bakery, bought lake front property at Hubbard Lake, bought a house and set up their oldest sons in the family business. Differences of opinion and relationship issues separated most of the older children from close ties to their parents, Paul and Clara and full reconciliation was never fully realized. SS# 375-34-0880

Entry to Ellis Island, New York: Paul Wehoffer (SP!) arrived April 28, 1913 at age 16 from Pinkamilka Ungary (all their spelling not mine), ethnicity: Ungarn (Hungarian) German. Port of Departure Le Havre, Seine-Inferior, France on the ship Rochambeau. Going to brother Adolf (Step brother) in Chicago, 141 W. 45th St., Chicago, Ill.. Relative still in Hungary father Franz.
Brother Adolf was Adolf Radakovits, step brother whose mother Theresia was Franz Wehofer third wife.

1918: Draft Registration; Residence 7018 S. Justine, Chicago. Nearest Relative: Adolf Radohowitz (Radowicz)? 5127 S. Wells, Chicago, Ill

Found in 1930 Census in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois - Paul Wehofer, age 32, born in Austria with wife Clara.
Wehofer, Paul; Head, age 32, born Austria; Father born Germany; Mother born Austria; Speaks German; Immigration 1907; Occupation - Baker
Clara, Wife, age 21, Born Michigan; Father & Mother born Germany

Also in Cook County, on same census, different area, at seperate residence was a John Wehofer, age 28; a "Lodger" in a household, from Hungary and was a "Blacksmith". Unknown if relative of Paul.

Also in Cook County on same 1930 census, different area was Frank Wehofer, age 39, born 1891 in Austria, married to Theresa age 35 with sons Rudolph age 16 and Frank aged 8. Unknown if relative of Paul.

I have copy of Pal Wehofer Hungarian Birth Registration from where registered on 12 May 1897 in Pinka-Miske. Details match recollections of William and Joyce Wehofer which leads to further varification of details through the Catholic Church records of his father Franz and his mother Aloisia.

Meanwhile, back in Hungary the year after Pal emigrated to the US, World War I happened.

Main articles: Austro-Hungarian entry into World War I and Hungary in World War I

After the assassination of the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914, a series of crises escalated quickly. A general war began on 28 July with a declaration of war on Serbia by Austria-Hungary.[45]

Austria-Hungary drafted 9 million soldiers in World War I, of which 4 million were from the kingdom of Hungary. During the First World War, Austria-Hungary fought on the side of Germany, Bulgaria and Ottoman Empire? the so-called Central Powers. They conquered Serbia easily, and Romania declared war. The Central Powers then conquered Southern Romania and the Romanian capital of Bucharest. In November 1916, Emperor Franz Joseph died; the new monarch, Emperor Charles I of Austria (IV. K?roly), sympathized with the pacifists in his realm.
