Settled in/moved to in 1636 in Hartford, CT (one of first settlers). Senior Warden, St. Mary's, Great Bentley, Essex, England [Virkus1 867]

Came to America with his family from England on the ship "Increase" (Mr. Robert Lea, master) starting in April 1635.

Moved to Hartford, CT in about 1636. His name is on a monument in honor of the first settlers of Hartford, CT [Virkus 867]

Later moved to Norfolk. Was one of Winthrop's Outposts on the Connecticutt River 1636-1637. Was a surveyor of highways from 1639-1647 [Virkus1 867].

Moved to Norwalk, CT in 1650 where he was among the first settlers. Was Deputy to the General Court in 1653 (or 1654). -------------- Torrey, p 493:

They sailed from London between the 13th and the 18th of April 1635 on the Increase, Mr. Robert Lea, master bound to New England. Mathew Marvin, husbandman 35, his wife Elizabeth 31, Mathew Marvynn 8, Marie Marvynn 6,Sara Marvynn 3, Hanna Marvynn 6 months. They arrived in June of 1635 at either Boston or Salem, Massachusetts. Matthew was an early member of the 1st Church of Hartford, Connecticut where his name is on the Founders Monument. In 1650 they moved to Norwalk, Connecticut where he was again among the first settlers. I am not sure how one can conclude any more from the above than that Elizabeth's surname MAY have been GREGORY.

BTW taking a quick look at the NEHGR CDs there are a lot of ref's to Mathew MARVIN but on the first CD there is an article "Genealogical Sketch of the DESCENDANTS of REINOLD AND MATHEW MARVIN, WHO CAME TO NEW ENGLAND in 1635." [Compiled from authentic sources by TR Marvin, Boston] The article is in Volume 16 p 235-254 (July 1862). It mentions Matthew's first wife had the Christian name of Elizabeth and that his second wife was Alice KELLOG. His first wife is listed as having come with him from England in 1635.

"the Torrey book, as well as the two supplements to it, so I took a look for you:"

    Pg. 493 - MARVIN, Matthew (1600-1680) & 1/wf Elizabeth [?GREGORY]; b 1623; Hartford/Norwalk
    MARVIN, Matthew (1600-1680) & 2/wf Alice [BOUTON] (1610-1680), w John; ca 1647; Hartford/Norwalk

    Pg. 788 - WEBB, Richard (1580-1665) & 1/wf Grace WILSON; in Eng, May 1610; Cambridge/Boston WEBB, Richard ( - 1665) & 2/wf Elizabeth [GREGORY]/BUCHARD?/GRANT ( - 1680); b 1635; Cambridge/etc.

So, he evidently saw something that led him to believe that the Elizabeth who married Matthew MARVIN might have been a GREGORY, but he was uncertain. He certainly didn't mention who her father was. Neither supplement mentioned MARVIN or WEBB. You can order the microfilm of Torrey's original manuscript, which contains his notes, through your local Mormon library. Then you can check to see what led Torrey to suspect she may have been a GREGORY.

In Pope's __Pioneers of Massachusetts__ pg. 303-304, under MARVIN it says "Matthew, husbandman, ae. 35, with wife Elizabeth, ae. 31, (children) Elizabeth ae. 13, Matthew, ae. 8, Marie, ae. 6, Sarah, ae. 3, and Hannah , ae. 1 1/2 yr., came in the Increase April 15, 1635." No source for this information is listed, but it sounds like it came from a passenger list.

Pope had nothing much under GREGORY, nor did Savage. Torrey evidently found information to dispute Savage's dates for Matthew, since Savage said that Matthew died in 1687 but Torrey said 1680.

So, it sounds as if there is no definitive reason to say Elizabeth was a GREGORY, although it is possible. You'd best check out Torrey's notes on microfilm.
