2. | Sterling Theophilus BACON was born on 14 May 1824 in Georgia (son of Nicholas Hobson BACON and Sarah V. MATTHEWS); died after 1880 in Georgia. Other Events:
- Occupation: House Carpenter
- _UID: 91C41B8227754DDAA6945B7AF077F5F717ED
Notes:
Caroline is listed in the 1860 Oglethorpe County, Georgia census page 413
with just the children. Sterling is listed on the 1860 Hamilton County,
Tennessee census page 130 & 1870 Walker County, Georgia census page 262
with wife named Mary . There is a son listed as Cicero Bacon. Sterling
adopted Marys child after the boys father died. He was a Fultcher.
Listed on the 1880 Walker County census page 310D.
Sterling married Caroline MITCHELL on 17 Mar 1844 in Newton County, Georgia. Caroline was born about 1826 in Georgia; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

3. | Caroline MITCHELL was born about 1826 in Georgia; and died. Other Events:
- _UID: 16037FCE91434CCEA3FD21229ED7E312A120
Notes:
Caroline is listed in the 1860 Oglethorpe County census page 413 with
just the children. Sterling is listed on the 1860 Hamilton County,
Tennessee & 1870 Walker County census with a wife named Mary. This
suggests that Caroline and Sterling were either divorced proir to the
1860census or he left her and went to Tennessee where he remarried.
Our Sterling could be the "BLACK SHEEP" of the Bacon family if he
abandoned Caroline and became a bigamist. Divorce was VERY uncommon for
this era.

Newton County census page 33. Listed on the 1850 Newton County, GA census
page 445. Also listed is Sarah Matthews age 83, Sarah's mother &
Jeremiah's wife. Also listed is Mary Bacon age 16.
Listed on the 1860 Fulton County, GA Census page 951
Listed on the 1880 Decatur County, Georgia census page 232B is Nicholas
living with daughter-in-law Mary and granddaughter Katy Peacock. Sarah is
not listed suggesting she died between 1860 & 1880. We are not sure which
Bacon son the daughter-in-law Mary Bacon was married to. She is lsited
as 44 years old on the 1880 census making her born about 1836. From her
age we feel that she was the wife of Nicholas Hobson Bacon Jr. who was
born in 1835. The other two sons James born in 1844 and Robert born in
1849 we feel were too young to be her husband. We cannot find any
information on Nicholas Jr. He could have died in the war but can't find
any record of his service. The grandaughter Katy Peacock is listed as 22
which would make her born about 1858. We cannot match her to any
Nicholas & Sarah's daughters. Peacock could be her maiden name or she
could have been married.
Copies of Bacon/Matthews Family Bible list birth/death/marriage dates of

174 FIFTEENTH DISTRICT, THIRD SECTION, CHEROKEE Jeremiah Matthews
Martin's Newton COMMENT: Soldier of late war. Granted previous to
the first day of January, 1838
Jeremiah is mentioned in the book: "Gone to Georgia" article 604 as being
listed on the 1785 Wilkes County tax list, Elsberry District.
From the court abstracts of Cumberland County, NC, January 30, 1782, a
warrant was issued for Jeremiah and Rueben Johnson for pilfering from
confiscated property. They were to have appeared in the next April 1782
court. There is no record of that trial suggesting that Jeremiah left
North Carolina and went to Georgia before they could be tried. Georgia
had no extradition at this time. In his pension papers Jeremiah said he
left for Georgia in 1783, however since the trial was to be in 1782 it is
more likely that he left in 1782. In his pension papers he said he could
not recollect dates very well.
Ref: Slaves George(5-3-1801), Mingo(8-30-1802), Phyllis(1-5-1796) and
Sarah.(The slave Sarah is not the wife Sarah Johnson of Jeremiah- there
seems to be some confusion on this. They are two different people))
There is a very good possibility that Sarah the slave was Jeremiah's
mistress and the other three slaves their children. We discovered that
the three children were mentioned in the family bible with their birth
dates. Also in Jeremiah's will he provides for life for Sarah the slave
and that she may chose any of his children to live with for the rest of
her life. After receiveing this information it was put on the internet.
There were several replies to this information from professional
genealogists and the director of the African-American page. According to
ALL of these authorities, the information that was given is almost a 95%
chance that the slaves were Jeremiah's children, and most likely that
Sarahthe slave was the mother. Slaves were usually not mentioned in a
family bible unless they were "family". And providing for Sarah the way
he did shows that she was very important Jeremiah.
