    Notes:

    Sir Thomas Leigh was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1559. He was an English merchant and Lord Mayor of London in 1558-59. He served as a City Alderman from 1552 until his death in 1571.

    Leigh was born about 1504 at Wellington, Shropshire to Roger Leigh (who died 1506) and Anne n?e Trafford. He was the 2nd great-grandson of Sir Piers Leigh, who was wounded at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, whose family was a cadet branch of the ancient Leighs, of West Hall, High Legh, Cheshire.

    He was raised by Sir Rowland Hill, a City mercer and wool merchant, and later joined Sir Rowland's business, and circa 1535, he married his niece and heir, Alice Barker, daughter of John Barker and Elizabeth Hill. The following year he was appointed a Justice of the Peace for Shropshire. Leigh, who served three times as Master of the Mercers' Company, also served as Sheriff of London (1555? 56) and in 1558 became Lord Mayor of London. He was also a merchant of the Staple and a member of the Merchant Adventurers' Company.

    He and Alice had 5 daughters and 4 sons, Rowland, Sir Thomas Bt. and Sir William and Richard. Daughter Winifred married George Bond (who was Mayor of London) and Katherine married Edward Baber, MP. other daughters were Isobel, mentioned in his will, Alice (Coney) and Mary (Cobbe)

    It was said she was the favourite niece of her uncle Sir Rowland Hill, Mayor of London 1559. He raised her husband Thomas Leigh and arranged the marriage between them.
    Her mother was Elizabeth Hill, sister of the said Sir Rowland Hill, and father was John Barker.

    She married Thomas Leigh shortly before March 13 1536, and had 4 sons and 5 daughters.

    2nd son Sir Thomas Leigh of Stoneleigh
    3rd son Sir William of Newham Regis
    There was a 4th son but he was not generally counted in most historical records, Richard, who died w/o issue 1570.

    John Leigh, who inherited his mother's estate, of Ridge was escheat of Chesire for seven years, from the 12th Henry VI., and was living in 1452, being then also escheat. He m. Alice, daughter and heir of Thomas Alcock, and had issue,

    Richard Leigh, the second son, was seated at Russell, in Staffordshire, in 1456, and was s,. by his son,
    Roger Leigh, of Wellington, in Shropshire & Russell, in the county of Stafford. This gentleman had issue,
    William, who succeeded to the estates, and marrying Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Harper, Knt., and co-heir of her brother, was progenitor of the Leighs, of Russell. This William Leigh, was gentleman usher to King Henry VII,.
    Thomas Leigh, a younger son, who was brought up under Sir Rowland Hill, a rich merchant of London, and Lord Mayor of that city; by whom, for his knowledge and industry, he was made his factor beyond sea ; and in that trust deporting himself with the highest integrity, Sir Rowland bestowed upon him the hand of his favorite niece, Alice, daughter of John Barker, alias Coverall, of Wolverton, in the county of Salop, by Elizabeth, hi wife, daughter of Thomas Hill, and upon the issue of marriage he entailed the greater part of his estate. Thomas Leigh subsequently served the office of Sheriff of London, and was Lord Mayor at the death of Queen Mary. He was knighted during his mayoralty and dying in 1571, was buried in Mercer's Chapel, London, with this epitaph upon his tomb:
    "Sir Thomas Leigh bi civil life, All offices did beare, Which in this city worshipful Or honorable were: Whome as God blessed with great wealth, So losses did he feel; Yet never changed he constant minde, Tho' fortune turn'd her wheels. Learning he loved and helpt the poore to them that knew him deere; For whom this lady and loving wife This tomb hath builded here."
