    Notes:

    Sir Richard Champernowne ... who married twice, firstly to Alice Astley, a daughter of Thomas Astley, 3rd Baron Astley (c.1315? 1370). His eldest son by Alice Astley was Alexander Champernowne of Bere Ferrers in Devon, who having married Joan Ferrers, the eldest daughter and co-heiress of Martin Ferrers, lord of the manor of Beere Ferrers, made that manor his seat and the seat of son, who died leaving two daughters and co-heiresses.

    Sir Richard Champernowne married secondly Katherine Daubeney, a daughter of Giles Daubeney, 3rd Baron Daubeney (died 1386) of South Ingleby by his wife Eleanor de Willington. The descendants of this second marriage inherited Modbury.

    Biography
    Birth
    Sir Thomas Champernowne was the son and heir of Richard Champernon and Elizabeth Valletort.

    Marriage
    He married Eleanor (Rohaut) Champernoun, daughter and heiress of Sir Roger de Rohant of Aston Rohant (today Aston Rowant) in Oxfordshire. She was dead by April 1369 when her husband quit-claimed his rights to her inheritance in favor of their son Richard.

    As is recorded in the Register of John de Grandisson, Bishop of Exeter from 1327 to his death in 1369, Sir Thomas Champernowne exercised his right of presentation to Modbury Priory on 6 April 1361/2, appointing as Prior Philip de Ffurnariis, following the death of Prior Robert de Curceyo.

    THOMAS CHAMPERNOUN, Esq. As Lord of Modbury, he presented to Modbury Priory in June 1345, June 1349, April 1350/1, March 1361/2 and June 1375; as Lord of Bridford he presented there to the church in June 1349 and Jan 1358/9. Collector of the 10th and 15th for Devonshire, 1 Aug 1357-15 Sept 1357; appointed Sheriff of Devonshire 20 Nov 1362 and 26 Nov 1367 serving a one year term in each instance. In Apr 1369, he quit-claimed his rights to the Rohant lands in Worthington, Leicestershire; Estcoton, by Gildesburgh, Northamptonshire; and Combe Real and Portesmouth, Devonshire to his son, Richard.

    Appointed escheator for Devonshire, 15 June 1369, serving until 16 Feb 1371. In that capacity, he was appointed on 20 Nov 1369 to guard the temporalities of the Bishop of Exeter, now void, and in the King's hands; appointed collector of the 10th and 15th, 6 Dec 1373 and again 14 Nov 1374; writ of supersedeas issued May 1379 in favor of Thomas Chambernoun, Esq. for a demand for his homage which he has done; exempted for life from assizes, juries, etc., by letters patent of 9 Nov 1378; appointed collector of a tax in Cornwall. The last reference to him occurred on 12 Nov 1387 when he was serving on commission of road inquiry in Devonshire.

    On 27 March 1326 having proved his age, he succeeded to the title of 3rd Lord Astley.

    In 1338 he founded a chantry in Astley, Warwickshire, which, in 1343, he had sanction to change into a collegiate church.

    He was summoned to Parliament from 25 Feb. 1342/3 to 10 Mar 1349/50.on 25 February 1342/43, by writ.

    Thomas Astley died in 1385.
