Josiah's Name first appears on the Windsor Town Records in connection with his marriage; and, the same year he bought a house and lot south of the Rivulet (and near the Old Mill) on what was afterwards known as the Gillet place, opposite the residence of the late Hon. N. H. Barber. In 1655 he bought the property later known as the Chief Justice Ellsworth place. He was a juror in 1664; made freeman 21 May, 1667. Children are listed in the Ellsworth Genealogy and the Mathew Grant Record.

Josiah married Elisabeth HOLCOMBE on 16 Nov 1654 in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut. 2a. Older genealogies frequently included "three brothers came to America" tales and some fraudulent professionals invented noble origins for immigrant ancestors to satisfy clients seeking greater social status. Others have attempted to validate lines of descent from Sir John and Lucia (Bower) Ellsworth to other immigrants of colonial New England named Aylsworth, Ellsworth, etc. No original records have been found to document the existence of the Ellsworth-Bower family.

    Notes:

Joseph Loomis came on the Susan and Ellen to Boston, July 17, 1638, and after staying a year in Dorchester, he is supposed to have accompanied Rev. Ephraim Hewitt to Windsor, Aug. 17, 1639. He was b. 1590. d. Nov. 25, 1658, in Windsor. m. Mary White, June 30, 1614, in Shalford. bap. Aug. 24, 1590. d. Aug. 23, 1652. Joseph Loomis was a woolen draper, a merchant engaged in the purchase of cloth from the many weavers who wove on hand looms in their cottage homes. He had a store in Braintree, Essex, Eng., stocked with cloths and other goods which a draper usually dealt in. These products he sold both wholesale and retail to tailors and consumers in general. Braintree and near-by towns were centers of the cloth manufacture, as many weavers from Flanders had been induced to come to England by Edward III and they had been followed by others in the latter part of the sixteenth century, who had settled in Essex, not far from Braintree, in 1570. Joseph Loomis was in prosperous circumstances and his father-in-law, Robert White, was a man of considerable means for those times. Elder John White was a son of Robert White, and the wives of John Porter and Elder William Goodwin were also daughters of Robert White. Joseph Loomis settled at Windsor near the junction of the Farmington river with the Connecticut, on the island. The island was high land and so called because it became an island at every great freshet of the river. His house has been in the perpetual possession of the family down to the present time and is probably the oldest one now standing in Connecticut, which is still owned by the descendants of the pioneer builder. It was on this island that Capt. William Holmes and a few other men of the Plymouth colony established a trading house in 1633, which was the first permanent English settlement in Connecticut. Joseph Loomis was Deputy in 1643, 1644. In Feby. 1640 he had granted him 21 acres on the west side of the Connecticut river; he also had several large tracts on the east side, partly from the town and partly by purchase.

    Notes:

BIOGRAPHY: Although Thomas Holcomb and most of his descendants usually spell the name "Holcomb", it bears an "e" on Dorchester and Boston records. BIOGRAPHY: History:The sources on Thomas Holcombe differ considerably on Thomas' ancestry. Thomas was born in England, most probably in one of the southwestern counties, Pembrokeshire, Wiles, or Devonshire. We do not know the date of his birth but his wife seems to have been born about 1617 and their first child born about 1634: McCracken believes this would place his birth somewhere about 1610; Seaver says 1601. Seaver and other early researchers think that Thomas was born to Gilbert and Ann Courtney Holcomb. George McCracken Writing in the "American Genealogist" Vol 26:109, found that Gilbert Holcomb's oral will stated d.s.p. which meant died without issue and that Gilbert left his estate to his brother-in-law, Richard Bonithon. McCracken's research is based on J.L. Vivian's "The visitations of the County Devon", on pages 474 and 533. Jesse Seaver thought that English records indicated that Thomas Holcomb was born in Pembrokeshire, Wales or Devonshire, England to Ann and Gilbert Holcomb. BIOGRAPHY: Thomas is thought to have come on the 1630 voyage of the "Mary and John", (Our Heritage Vol.III) but there is no proof of it. In March, 1630, he was in a company which assembled at Plymouth, Devonshire, where a large ship of 400 tons, chartered by Captain Squeb, for the voyage to America. It is thought that ship was the "Mary and John". On whatever ship they crossed, Thomas was in Massachusetts Bay by 4 May 1634 on which dat he became a freeman, and he is recorded as a resident of Dorchester. Refer to Internet printout for additional information. dl In the Spring of 1636, Reverend John Warham left Dorchester and came to Windsor,Connecticut, bringing his flock, including Thomas Holcomb, with him. Before leaving Dorchester Thomas sold his estate to Richad Jones (12 Aug 1635). Later, 1639, he moved to Poquonock, Hartford, CT., four miles west of Windsor, where he engaged in Farming. He was a Representative from Windsor and Hartford in the Convention that framed the now famous Constitution of the Connecticut C olony. Thomas died at Windsor. His grave is located in an old cemetary near the old homestead at Poquonock. His grave was marded by a brown stone about 2X4 feet in size. The stone, having crumbled with age, was removed. It was replaced with a new marker that was inscribed with family information, much of which is wrong. There is a story of the tombstone reported by a Mrs. Carrie Marshall Kendrick who lived on Poquonock Ave in Windsor that there was formerly a small cemetery by her house in which Thomas Holcombe was buried in Oct 1657. Members of the Holcomb family "later"removed to what is now Granby and took with them Thomas Holcomb's tombstone, if not his remains also and inserted the 1657 stone into an obelisk-type monument in the Granby Street Cemetery in Granby. Mrs. Kendrick further stated, that after C.G. Flanders reported on all the stones of that graveyard in 1934, that family members had demolished the obelisk-type monument and replaced it with a modern granite monument, and the original slab was then thrown into a dump. The inscription on the new stone is as follows: THOMAS HOLCOMB, BORN IN ENGLAND, DIED OCT. 1657 THOMAS, HIS SON, DIED 1736 ELIZABETH PETTEBONE, HIS WIFE DIED 1740 DANIEL, THEIR SON DIED 1760 ESTHER BUEL, HIS WIFE DIED 1765 DANIEL, THEIR ONLY SON, DIED OCT. 12 1836 AE 85 SARAH, HIS WIFE, DIED SEPT. 5, 1835 AE 54 HEPZIBAH GRISWOLD, HIS WIFE, DIED JULY 11, 1814 AE 33 GAYLORD G., THEIR 2ND SONE, DROWNED, JULY 4 1844 AE 50 On the reverse side under Masonic emblem: ALFRED E. HOLCOMB, AUG. 5, 1867 - SEPT.13, 1956 MABLE METCALF, HIS WIFE, NOV. 26, 1881 - MAY 7, 1956 EDMUND HOLCOMB, DIED DEC. 20, 1874 AE 74 ELIZA M., HIS WIFE, DIED SEPT. 12, 1862 AE 55 EMILY H., HIS WIFE, DIED JULY 21, 1914 AE 82 DANIEL E., ONLY CHILD OF EDMUND AND ELIZA, DIED CAROLINE H. CASE, DIED OCT. 3 1911 AE 47 The data on the north side of the stone contain a number of errors. Thomas Holcomb had no sone named Thomas, and, though C.G. Flanders must have seen a stone for the son, with the date of death, given as 1736, he shows no first name. Thomas did have a son who died in 1736, Benajah. Benajah, however, married Sarah Eno, not Elizabeth Pettebone, and though there were Holcomb-Pettebone marriages, no Elizabeth Pettebone married any Holcomb in the period. Some researchers feel that son Joshua belongs on the stone in place of non-excistant Thomas. BIOGRAPHY: His property was inventoried 1 Oct, 1657, the inventory came to 294/9/8 Pounds. The surviving children are listed with ages as Joshua (17), Benajah (13), Nathaniel (9), Abigail (19), Deborah (5-7), but this overlooks the two eldest daughters Elizabeth and Mary who were already married. See Printout for more information. dl BIOGRAPHY: 10 children of whom 3 died in childhood. There is a record which suggests there may have been an older son named John. Son Nathaniel had a son Nathaniel recorded at Springfield on 11 June 1673, but the same Vital Records attribute the birth of a daughter Sarah on 6 Oct 1673 to a John Holcum. Nothing more is known of this John, either at Springfield or Windsor. It could have been an error by the town clerk at Springfield and the surname Holcum is wrong. Some researchers think John may have gone to Virginia. BIOGRAPHY: James Eno, with his three children, came to live at the Holcomb house, after the death of his first wife, and his marriage to Elizabeth. CONFLICT: http://claim.goldrush.com/~humbert lists Adm.Essex Holcombe and John Holcombe along with children of Thomas as generation 16. Who are they? dl CONFLICT: Beckler lists birth place as England.
