    Notes:

William emigrated to America, about 1642. He died in 1697, aged 90 years.
William is believed traditionally to be the son of James Haviland (1553 - 1613), Mayor of Salisbury, England, and Thomassine Maindonail (ca 1560 - 1641). [1] The only evidence cited is a Christening record in 7 Sep 1606 at St. Thomas's, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England for a "William Havelan." (James had other children by a previous marriage.) This relationship has been debated, with James' brother Thomas being proffered as an alternative father. See Haviland Family Mysteries.
Due to full consideration of all the facts, this profile will, for the time being, maintain William as the son of James until more evidence and information can be found and analyzed.
    Marriage
William appears to have married Hannah Hicks ca 1652, a daughter of John and Horodias (Long) Hicks (a couple who suffered a divorce of notoriety) at Newport, Rhode Island

William Haviland emigrated to America between 1639 - 1646, but probably closer to 1639-1640, for in 1646 he was listed as a Church Warden in Newport, R.I. [citation needed]
He was recorded as a freeman of Newport in 1653, along with Benedict Arnold (the eventual president and then governor of Rhode Island). In 1655 he was received as Freeman from Newport in a General Election held at Providence, R.I. [4], very likely to re-elect Roger Williams as President of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, with whom William's views were almost certainly in alignment given his immigration to specifically Rhode Island and his religious beliefs.
On 21 May 1656 he was listed as a Commissioner to the General Court at Portsmouth, R.I., from Newport. [4] This station should be understood within the context of the political and religious context of Rhode Island at that time.
"While many arrived seeking freedom from religious persecution, unfortunately it continued, and by 1656 some newly arrived Quakers were quite expressive and extreme and sought to exasperate that conflict. William Haviland's colleague Benedict Arnold succeeded Roger Williams as the President of the Colonies, and was forced to respond to these matters. William Haviland, while not a Quaker at this time, was arguably Protestant and probably distressed by the events of that year, given that in the last two generations of his family there were persecutions of Protestants in England. And so he became involved in the local politics wherein the separation of Church and State and freedom of religious expression, for which Roger Williams was a strong proponent and probably William Haviland also, was a major issue

There is a reference to grants by Pettaquamscutt land purchases to William Haviland on 1 May 1663. [12]
William then removed to Long Island, ca 1667, for in that year he purchased 100 acres of land from his brother-in-law, Thomas Hicks, on what is now Little Neck, (then called "Cornbury"). [4]
On 24 Mar 1685 he signed the renewal-charter of the Patent of Flushing, as did his wife's brother Thomas Hicks. (Flushing is now a township in the borough of Queens, New York, NY.) "The first patent of Incorporation of the Town of Flushing was granted by the Dutch Governor, William Keift, and was dated October 10th, 1645. This was renewed under the English authority. The renewal-charter was dated March 24th, 1685. These manuscripts were probably lost in the fire [of October, 1789, as they were kept in the house of the John Vanderbilt, the Town Clerk, set ablaze deliberately by his slaves]. The only manuscript the Town has, relative to its Incorporation, is termed an "Exemplification of Flushing Patent." It is dated Feb. 24th, 1792; one hundred and seven years after the renewal by the English, and one hundred and forty-seven years after the original grant by the Dutch authorities. We found it in possession of Capt. George B. Roe, who kindly placed a copy at our disposal. It is only sixty-seven years old [as of 1859], but already many parts are nearly obliterated and can with difficulty be deciphered." [13] William Haviland's name was preserved in this document, as it was a reproduction of the renewal charter of 1685. A "Joseph Havyland" also signed the document. He may be Joseph, son of William.

    The Will of Benedict Arnold
William Haviland is mentioned by name in the will of Benedict Arnold, the Governor of Newport, R.I., wherein we find evidence that Arnold purchased land from Haviland and had neighboring (or nearby) property:
...and to her heirs and assigns to have and to hold, possess and enjoy as her and their own true rights and lawful inheritance forever, that is to say, ye lands and tenements hereafter mentioned, namely: ye house and two acres of land, be it more or less, that I bought of William Haviland, being and lying in ye precincts of ye town of Newport, above said, bounded on ye South and on ye East parts on land now or later in the possession of Thomas Clifton or his assigns, on ye West by a highway belonging to said town, and on ye North by land that I have bequeathed to my son Josias Arnold, and I order ye said line of fence to be made and forever maintained by ye occupants of ye premises which I bought of Wm. Haviland aforesaid, as also all that land which I bought of Wm. Vaughan being and lying in ye precincts of the said town of Newport... Unto my beloved son Josiah Arnold aforenamed, I give and bequeath a certain parcell of land, being and lying in ye precincts of ye town of Newport above mentioned, ye said land containing by estimation, four acres more or less, being eight rod in breadth from North to South, and eighty rod in length from East to West, bounded on ye North by land I have bequeathed to his mother Damaris Arnold, &c. on ye East by land of Walter Clarke on ye South in part by land now or late in ye possession of Thomas Clifton or his assigns and partly by ye land above said, I bought of Wm. Haviland and bequeathed to ye said Damaris Arnold, &c.... [14]

    • Name: John Hicke

    Notes:

He had 2 children by Herodias Long: Hannah and Thomas. See his marriage record posted that gives his age as 23 in 1637 and other important data. "The Great Migration Begins" shows this John Hicks was not son of Robert and Margaret Hicks of Plymouth. The Plymouth couple, Robert & Margaret Hicks, made no mention of a son John in their will & they called Samuel their "eldest" son. JOHN HICKS md. 3 times. 1) Herodias Long 2) Florence (unknown) Carman, widow of John Carman and 3) Rachel (unknown) Starr, wid. of Thomas Starr. John Hicks's 2nd and 3rd marriages are confirmed in the "Great Migration Begins" for John Carman, v. 1, A? F, 311. For marriage to widow Rachel (Unknown) Starr see their prenuptial agreement cited below and "A History of the Starr Family, of New England, from the Ancestor, Dr. Comfort Starr...emigrated to Boston, MA, 1635," pp. 4-5. "The Great Migration Begins" shows that this John of L. I. was not the son of Robert Hicks of Plymouth. Robert's son has no record in America and did not come either with Robert or his mother as Plymouth records show. Robert and this John of R.I. and L.I. came to America 15 years apart and went to different locations, were never in the same place and no records suggest any ties. No son John was mentioned in the will of either Robert or Margaret (unknown) Hicks from Plymouth. Their son Samuel was referred to as eldest son. Thus Robert gave no indication that John living over at Flushing & Hempstead, L.I. was his son. It appears that John, son of Robert Hicks died young in England before 1623. First known record for this John Hicks was his marriage record which reads: "Mar. 14, 1637: Wch daie, appeared p[er]sonally John Hicke of ye parish of St. Olaves in Southwark Salter and a batchelour aged about 23 yeares and alledged that he intendeth to marrie with Harwood Long spinster aged about 21 yeares ye daughter of William Long Husbandman who giveth his Consent to this intended marriage And of ye truth of the pr[e]mises as also that he knows of no Lawfull let or impediment by reason of anie pr[ior] contract Consanguinity affinitie or otherwise to hinder this intended marriage he made faith and desires license to be married in ye parish Church of St ffaith London [signed] John Hickes." London Marriage Allegations Vol. 19: pg 92. JOHN HICKS STATED HIS AGE AT MARRIAGE in 1637 as 23 years old: Marriage record of 14 March 1636/7 at St, Faith's, crypt of St. Paul's, London, states his age as 23. This suggests he was born in 1614. There is no proof yet of where he was born, only that he was from the parish of St. Olaves in Southwark by the date of his marriage in March 1636/7. See "London and Surrey, England, Marriage Bonds and Allegations, 1597? 1921, Vol. 19: pg 92, indexed under John Hicke," available at ancestry. This record is also quoted by G. Andrews Moriaty in "Additions and Corrections to Austin's Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island (cont'd)," in "The American Genealogist," 39(1963):2, citing London Marriage Licenses, p. 153, British Rec. Soc. Several dates are given for divorce proceedings of John Hicks and Herodias Long in G. Andrews Moriarty, "Herodias (Long) Hicks-Gardiner-Porter a Tale of Old Newporte," in "Rhode Island History," volume 11, no. 3, (July 1952): 85. "On 12 December 1645 John Hicks wrote from Flushing to John Coggeshall at Newport: his side of the story. "[Herbert] Seversmith states that she obtained a divorce from Hicks in Rhode Island on 2 December 1643. On 1 June 1655 John Hicks was granted a divorce from Herodias in the Court at New Amsterdam by Governor Peter Stuyvesant." This is written in Dutch so I won't give it here. "After Hicks went to New Netherland, and possibly before, Herodias went to live with George Gardiner of Newport as his common-law wife and had a numerous family." When John went to Long Island, he took his 2 children with him. Md. 2) Florence unknown, wife of John Carman. See record at Jamaica where the children of John & Florence Carman are petitioning for "John Hicks, who had married their mother, to render an account of her estate. (Calendar of Dutch Mss. of N.Y., p. 223). In Robert Coe Puritan, p. 83, https://archive.org/details/robertcoepuritan00bart/page/82 Third marriage: about Jan. 22, 1662: Pre-nuptial agreement with third wife, widow Rachel Starr: Conditions of an agreement betwixt John Hickes of Hempstead of the one party, And Rachell Starre of Oysterbay of the other Party Jointly and freely agreed upon by both parties before they enter or joyne in Marriage estate, about the settling of their Estates, and for the preventing of Differences betwixt the Children of the said John Hickes and Rachell Starres shall bring to the said John Hickes of her owne (being taken upon Inventory) If it please God to take her away first by Death, that then ye said estate which Shee brought to ye said John Hickes shall return to ye children of ye sd Rachell Starre. And further it is agreed upon between them, that it it shall please God that their estate shall or Do increase that then the said increase shall equally bee divided, the one half to him and his children, the other half to her and her children, at the death of either of them. And further the sd John Hickes Doth give to the sd Rachel Starre (in case hee Die first) During her widowhood, the house and lands and Meddowe belonging to it and Six Cows, Foure Oxen, with the instrument of husbandry belonging to them, with so much of the housald stuff as she shall think meet for her Necessary use and a good horse for her use. In witness whereoff wee do Mutually hereunto set our hands the day and yeare before specified. Testes Richard Gildersleeve John Hickes Robert Ashman Rachell Starre Jonas Houldsworth "Records of the Towns of North and South Hempstead, Long Island," v. 1, 119? 120. John Hicks mentions 2 children in his will, Thomas and Hannah, wife of William Haviland, and a son-in-law Josias Starr who was a son of his 3rd wife Rachel. Some have thought this implies there was a third child of John Hicks, a daughter who md. Josiah Starr. Will of John Hicks made 29 April 1673, cited in "The Haviland Genealogy" by Josephine C. Frost, pp 27? 28. According to NEHGS, Josiah Starr md. a Rebecca and began the Danbury Starr branch https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/early-new-england-families-1641-1700/image?pageName=5&volumeId=13727. Torrey's New England Marriages before 1700 does cite a marriage between Josiah and Elizabeth Hicks of Hempstead although Torrey is frequently in error when he passes on errors copied from other people's interpretations. His source is a finding aid that is useful place to start but needs serious verifying by looking at all the evidence in persons' other records.

  1. 8.  Christopher DE HAVILLAND was born on 19 Jun 1519 in Isle of Guernsey, Channel Islands, England (son of Justice James DE HAVILLAND, of the Royal Court and Colliche FOUASCHIN); died on 24 Jan 1589 in Poole, Dorset, England, United Kingdom; was buried in 1589 in Parish of St James, Poole, Dorset, England.

    Notes:

First mention of Christopher in the port records for Poole in early 1542 (1541/2) when he is listed as the owner of some cloth and lead on the 'Mawdleyn' of Poole.
1544: Married Cecily Manne 16 September 1544 at Poole (Poole Parish Register); assessed on ?15 of goods for the subsidy this year (Dorset Tudor Subsidies 1523-93).
1547: Christoper was assessed at ?15 of goods for lay subsidy.
1550: Christopher was assessed at ?10 in goods for lay subsidy.
1553-8: Christopher was mentioned as a juror on a manor roll for Canford Manor, dating from reign of Queen Mary I.
1553: Christopher was appointed Bailiff of Poole. This means he became an administrator for judges at sessions of the royal court, acted as an executor of writs, assembled juries, collected fines, and otherwise represented the Queen's business in the city.
CULTURAL CONTEXT: 1553-8: Christopher's appointment to Bailiff of Poole (a position not to be confused with the Bailiff of the isle of Guernsey) might have coincided with the death of King Edward VI on 6 July 1553 and the accession of Queen Mary I, an important piece of context given that Mary I was strictly Catholic and persecuted Protestants. The political climate of this period was marked by a rise of religious intolerance in France and England between the Catholic Church and the reformed Protestants. While the de Havillands might have begun with the Catholic church (having been long associated with the church of St. James in Poole), it is possible that Christopher was sympathetic to Protestants. His son Thomas is alleged to have been staunchly Protestant in the years following Mary's reign [5], and Christopher's apparent grandson William immigrated to the New World [10], probably to seek freedom from religious persecution like just about everyone else who arrived there. William and his descendants became Quakers there. [11] The so-called Heresy Acts had been revived during his period, and as a Bailiff and Juror Christopher might have found himself in the uncomfortable position of "judging" or administrating cases against Protestant reformers. Executions against Protestants commenced in this precise period, what history calls the Marian Persecutions. (See List of Protestant Martyrs of the English Reformation. Of note is an absence of martyrs from Poole.) Also note the burning of the three "Guernsey Martyrs" in 1556 at St. Peter Port, supported by then Bailiff of Guernsey, Hellier Gosselin. This might have had an emotional and political impact on the family, being that the de Havillands on Guernsey had been Jurats (a station that reports to the Bailiff on Guernsey) before, but apparently not during, the Marian Persecution period. It is not unreasonable to assume that the horrific Guernsey Martyrs episode incited a move of the de Havilland family toward Protestantism, which impacted not only Christopher's eventual fate in Poole but even the decision to remove the Nobiliary particle "de" from the surname of Christoper's and other English branches, including his descendants, in order to disassociate themselves from the Catholic-aligned French. Thus "de Havilland" became just "Haviland" in the years that followed, except for those branches on Guernsey. While we have no evidence to support these speculations, it's not possible to dismiss this cultural context as having an impact on the de Havillands, as well as their footprints (or absence thereof) in the official record, especially given their political and social stations.
1558/9: Christopher was assessed at ?15 in goods for the lay subsidy.
1559: On 24 February, Christopher was one of the men on of the jury for the Court of Admiralty at Poole.
1563: Christopher paid 7s 4d for house and various pieces of land in Poole, the third highest amount in the town. (Chief rent, 28 April 1563).
1568: Christopher was one of many men who signed to authorise certain members of the town council to spend money on behalf of the rest in obtaining the new charter for the town of Poole.
1569: Elected Mayor of Poole for the first and only time. For mysterious reasons, he either did not take the office or did not hold it long, for the record indicates he was replaced that same year by his associate William Constantine (whom is also named as a Godfather for some of his children). There is another instance of two mayors serving in the same year in the list from 1490-1590, and in that case the new Mayor, or Mayor Elect, had died. (The History and Antiquities of the County of Dorset, John Hutchins, London, Bowyer & Nichols, 1774 ? also more recent editions.) However we should not assume that Christopher simply died in 1569. He may have returned to Guernsey for some period between 1569-1586. Or, records might have simply been lost.
CULTURAL CONTEXT: As above indicated, there are signals in the record that members of the de Havilland family were converting to Protestantism, and Mary I was executing known Protestants during this time. Poole being a prominent port city, receiving ships from France, would have placed Christopher in a precarious situation in his years in office if he decided to support Protestants, or at least not persecute them. We have potential evidence that he stayed in line with traditional Catholic alignment (see 1586 below).
1571: Lay subsidy list for Poole does not mention Christopher Haviland
1574: The 1574 Poole 'Census' lists 1373 people who were living there at this time. Christopher Haviland and his family are not there. (Poole Census 1574)
1578: Named in the Will of father-in-law John Mann of Poole, Dorsetshire, proved 1578 in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. (It is possible for a Will to be written prior to the death of a named inheritor. However that is not likely here, given the wording of the Will and social class of the family, and we must cite this as evidence that Christopher was probably still alive but possibly no longer located in Poole. He might have gone back to Guernsey, where Catholicism faded since the end of Mary I's reign. But we need supporting evidence of this.)
1586: The following is from secondary source material only, and no primary evidence has been cited nor found to substantiate it. Per Josephine Frost, Christopher "was one of those who obtained the Municipal Charter of Queen Elizabeth in 1586, this being considered as the foundation of the Municipal Franchises of Poole. From its dissolution in 1550 until 1586, Christopher was a Trustee of the property of the Guild of St. George.
