    Alexander Rankin, his son William and grandson Adam migrated to Ireland when Adam was only one year old, Adam having been born in Sterlingshire, Scotland. The Rankins took part in the siegeof Londonderry in 1690, and with other various families, defended that city when it was besieged by James II. This siege lasted for 105 days, and was finally relieved by William of Orange.

    SOURCES: William, with his family and father, fled Scotland and went to Ireland to escape religious persecution. One record indicates that William may have had a total of seven children. Three of his sons came to the New
    World to settle in Pennsylvania, west of Philadelphia. They were farmers in what is now Cumberland County. Three of his descendents - Richard, Samuel, Thomas - were early pioneer settlers of Dumplin Valley, Jefferson County, Tennessee. A tablet in the Mt.
