PIERRE de France ([1126]-Palestine 10 Mar [1180/10 Apr 1183]). William of Tyre names him as brother of Louis VII King of France, when recording his arrival in Palestine in 1179[406]. He succeeded as Seigneur de Courtenay, by right of his wife. "Petrus regis frater et Curtiniacensis dominus" donated property to the abbey of Fontaine-Jean by charter dated 1170, with the support of "uxor mea Isabel et primogenitus meus Petrus"[407]. The necrology of La Cour-Dieu records the death "VI Id Mar" of "Petrus de Curtiniaco"[408].

m (before 24 Nov 1160) ELISABETH de Courtenay, daughter and heiress of RENAUD Seigneur de Courtenay & his first wife Helvis de Donjon ([1140/45]-14 Sep after 1205). A Historia Regum Francorum records that "Petrus", son of Louis VI King of France, married "filiam Rainaldi de Curtiniaco cum?terra illius"[249].

The Continuator of Aimon of Fleury names "Petrus" as sixth son of "rex Ludovicus" and his wife "Adalaidem filiam Humberti comitis de Mauriana", adding that he married "filiam Rainaldi de Corteniaco" and had his land as there was no other surviving heir ("et terram ipsius habuit cum ea, quia non erat alius h?res superstes")[250]. The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines names "domina de Monte-Argisi fuit soror vel neptis illius [=Guilelmus?archiepiscopus Bituricensis]" as the wife of "Petro de Cortenaio regis Philippi patruo", "Monte-Argisi" being identified as "Montargis, d?partement Loiret" by the editor of the MGH edition[251].

"Petrus dominus Curtiniaci et uxor mea Elisabeth" confirmed donations made by "antecessorum nostrorum...dominus Milo et filii eius" to Fontaine-Jean abbey by charter dated 24 Nov 1160, witnessed by "Willelmus de Cortiniaco..."[252].

The 1166/67 Pipe Roll records "filie Regin de Crtinni" in London/Middlesex[253]. As discussed above in the introduction to section showing Elisabeth's father, it is possible that this entry relates to Elisabeth. "Petrus...Ludovici Francorum regis frater" granted privileges to Montargis, with the consent of "uxoris su? Helisabeth et Petri filii sui", by charter dated 1170[254].

"Petrus regis frater et Curtiniacensis dominus" confirmed donations to Fontaine-Jean abbey, with the consent of "uxor mea Ysabel et primogenitus meus Petrus", by charter dated 1170, witnessed by "Ex parte domini et pueri..."[255].

"Petrus de Curtiniaco frater regis" confirmed donations made to Fontaine-Jean abbey by "Guillelmus de Curtiniaco" on leaving for Jerusalem, with the consent of "uxoris mei Elisabeth", by undated charter[256].

"Petrus frater regis dominus de Monteargi et de Curtiniaco" donated property to Fontaine-Jean abbey on leaving for Jerusalem, with the consent of "uxor mea Ysabel et filius meus Petrus", by charter dated 1179[257].

"Elisabeth domina de Curteneto mater Petri comitis Nivernensis" donated money to Paris Notre-Dame, for the anniversary of "Petri mariti meio", and a further donation to the Knights Hospitallers after she died, by charter dated 1189[258]. Bouchet states that Elisabeth confirmed donations to "l' abbaye des Escharlis" in 1205 "qui est le dernier Acte qu'on touve d'elle"[259]. Louis VI, called The Fat (1081-1137), king of France (1108-1137), son and successor of Philip I; he was married to Adelaide of Savoy. Almost his entire reign was spent in subduing the robber barons, who preyed on the environs of Paris but were finally forced to yield to royal authority. For some 20 years during the period from 1109-1135, Louis waged war against Henry I, the Norman king of England, and against Henry's son-in-law, Holy Roman Emperor Henry V; he successfully repelled an invasion by Henry V in 1124. Louis greatly strengthened the royal power in France, granted benefactions to the church and privileges to towns, and became known as the protector of the peasants and as a fearless military leader. He was succeeded on the throne by his son Louis VII.

Adelaide of Maurienne, also called Alix or Adele[1] (1092 ? 18 November 1154) was a queen of France as the second wife of King Louis VI (1115-1137).

Family
Adelaide was the daughter of Count Humbert II of Savoy and Gisela of Burgundy.[2] Adelaide's older brother Amadeus III succeeded their father as count of Savoy in 1103.[3] Adelaide had the same name as her paternal great-grandmother Adelaide of Susa, ruler of the March of Turin, and her second cousin, Adelaide del Vasto, queen of Jerusalem.[4] Through her father, Adelaide was also related to Emperor Henry V. On her mother's side, Adelaide's relatives included her uncle Pope Callixtus II, who visited Adelaide at court in France, and her first cousin King Alfonso VII of Le?n and Castile.[5]

Queenship
Adelaide became the second wife of King Louis VI of France, whom she married on 3 August 1115 in Paris, France.[6] They had nine children, the second of whom became Louis VII of France.

Adelaide was one of the most politically active of all France's medieval queens.[7] Her name appears on 45 royal charters from the reign of Louis VI.[8] During her tenure as queen, royal charters were dated with both her regnal year and that of the king.[9] Among many other religious benefactions, she and Louis founded the monastery of St Peter's (Ste Pierre) at Montmartre, in the northern suburbs of Paris.[10]

After Louis VI's death, Adelaide did not immediately retire to conventual life, as did most widowed queens of the time. Instead, she married Matthieu I of Montmorency,[11] with whom she had one child. She remained active in the French court and religious activities.

Death
In 1153 she retired to Montmartre Abbey, which she had founded with Louis VII. She died there on 18 November 1154.[11] She was buried in the cemetery of the Church of St. Pierre at Montmartre. The abbey was destroyed during the French Revolution, but Adelaide's tomb is still visible in the church of St Pierre.[12]

Legend
Adelaide is one of two queens in a legend related in the seventeenth century by William Dugdale. As the story goes, Queen Ad?laide of France became enamored of a young knight, William d'Albini, at a joust. However, he was already engaged to Adeliza of Louvain and refused to become her lover. The jealous Ad?laide lured him into the clutches of a hungry lion, but William ripped out the beast's tongue with his bare hands and thus killed it. This story is almost without a doubt, apocryphal.[13]

Philip I (23 May 1052 ? 29 July 1108), called the Amorous,[1] was King of the Franks from 1060 to 1108.

Philip first married Bertha of Holland in 1072.[6] Although the marriage produced the necessary heir, Philip fell in love with Bertrade de Montfort, the wife of Fulk IV, Count of Anjou. He repudiated Bertha (claiming she was too fat) and married Bertrade on 15 May 1092.[7] In 1094 following the synod of Autun, he was excommunicated by the papal representative, Hugh of Die, for the first time;[7] after a long silence, Pope Urban II repeated the excommunication at the Council of Clermont in November 1095.[8] Several times the ban was lifted as Philip promised to part with Bertrade, but he always returned to her; in 1104 Philip made a public penance and must have kept his involvement with Bertrade discreet.[9] In France, the king was opposed by Bishop Ivo of Chartres, a famous jurist.[10]

The Annales Egmundani names "Florentius I" as brother of "Theodericus IIII comes filius Theoderici et Othelhildis" when recording that he succeeded his brother[324]. No source has been identified which indicates Floris's birth date. However, recent examination of his skeleton has revealed that he was aged between 40 and 50 years old when he died, which would place his birth in [1010/21][325]. His estimated marriage date suggests his birth in the later part of this estimated birth date range. The Chronologia Johannes de Beke names "Theodricum succedentem Hollandia principum et Florencium Orientalis Frisie comitem" as children of Count Dirk III & his wife[326]. "Heinricus?rex" confirmed a treaty between Wilhelm Bishop of Utrecht and Reginbert Abbot of Echternach under which they recognised each other's rights in "Flardinge, Kiericwerve, Velsereburc, Heligelo, Pethem" by charter dated 28 Dec 1063 which names "Theoderico comite ac filio eius Theoderico fratreque eius Florencio"[327]. He succeeded his brother in 1049 as FLORIS I Count of Holland. The Annales Egmundani record that "Florentius comes Hollandensis" was killed in 1061 at "Hamerthe"[328]. The Chronologia Johannes de Beke records the death "1061?in Hamerth?XIV Kal Iun" of Count Floris and his burial at Egmond[329]. She married secondly (1063) Robert de Flandre ([1035]-13 Oct 1093), who was regent of Holland for his stepson until 1071, when he succeeded as Robert I Count of Flanders. The date of her second marriage is based on the Chronologia Johannes de Beke recording that, two years after the death of her first husband, Gertrud married "Roberto iuniori filio Balduini comitis Flandrie", specifying that the latter ruled the county of Holland on behalf of "Theodrici domicelli iunioris adhuc etatis"[334]. "Gertrudis" is named as wife of "Roberti Frisonis" in the Cartulaire de Saint-Bertin, which does not give her origin[335]. The Genealogia ex stirpe Sancti Arnulfi names "Idam Namucensem?uxorem Angelberti marchionis et Gertrudem comitissam Flandrensem" as children of "Bernardum"[336]. Athon was succeeded by his son Joscelin, who had three sons: Miles, who was Lord of Courtenay after him; Joscelin, who joined the First Crusade and became Count of Edessa; and Geoffrey, who also fought in the Holy land and died there.

In the 12th century, Reginald de Courtenay (d.1190), son of Milo de Courtenay (d.1127), quarrelled with King Louis VII of France and moved to England: His French lands were forfeit, and passed, with his sister Elizabeth, to Louis' brother Peter, who took the name "Peter de Courtenay".
