It is not known just when or where the first settlement was made in
the territory now composing the county of Cheatham. The earliest ac-
count is that of Adam Binkley, who settled with his wife and sons, Ja-
cob, Peter, Joseph, Frederick, Henry and Adam, Jr., on Sycamore Creek,
near the present village of Sycamore Mills in the year 1780; but this is
probably a mistake as to date. The first settlements were made along
the streams where many sparkling springs were found.

Sycamore Mills is located in the picturesque valley of Sycamore
Creek, at the terminus of the Hyde's Ferry Turnpike, and about four
miles north of Ashland City, and is the site of the famous sycamore
Powder-mills. The scenery round about it is "romantic and wild," and
beautiful beyond description. The bluffs on either side of the valley
rise to an elevation of about 200 feet. The best view, perhaps, is ob-
tained from the site of the old Millwood Institute, where one may stand
and view the hills of equal altitude beyond the village, and observe that
the tallest sycamore trees in the valley will not reach half way up to the
line of vision. The waterpower at this place is considered the best
within sixty miles of Nashville. Its available power for all seasons of
the year is equal to 250 horse-power. A pointed bluff extends into the
valley from the south, and gradually descends and narrows down to a
width of about thirty feet, at which point it is only a few feet above the
creek, and then it rises and widens gradually, forming a long ridge, and
comes to a point about 100 rods farther out in the valley. The foot of
this bluff and ridge is washed by the creek, which travels a distance of
two miles in a horse-shoe bend and returns to a point within 600 feet
from the narrow place in the ridge above described. At this place the
creek is dammed, and the water conducted through a race-cut across the...

    Notes:

Johann Jacob Weller was born September 16, 1704, in Diedenshausen, Wittgenstein, Westphalia, Germany, the son of Johann Daniel Weller. His father married a year later to Anna Maria Spies, so it seems like either Johann Jacob was the son of an earlier wife of his father, or he was illegitimate. Johannes Weller, also an immigrant who settled in the Thurmont, Frederick County, Maryland, area, was most likely his 1/2 brother, despite the fact that many have claimed they were cousins or even not related at all. Jacob married 3 times. The first time on March 10, 1737, in Diedenshausen, to Anna Margaretha Koehn, who died shortly after they arrived in Pennsylvania. Perhaps she became ill on the voyage. Jacob married 2nd on April 21, 1738, in Hallem Township, York County, Pennsylvania, to Maria Barbara Willheit, daughter of Johann Friedrich and Wilhelmina Lucretia Hafner Willheit, also immigrants from Germany. They were the parents of 5 known children: John Jacob, Philip, Elizabeth Juliana, John and Maria Magdalena Weller. Maria Barbara passed away in 1754. Jacob married 3rd on August 13, 1755, to Anna Elizabeth Krieger. They were the parents of one daughter, Anna Elizabeth Weller. Jacob Weller passed away on May 8, 1794, in Thurmont, Frederick County, Maryland, and was buried on the 10th in Graceham Moravian Church Cemetery, Graceham, Frederick County, Maryland.
From the records of the Graceham Moravian Church, Graceham, Frederick County, Maryland:
"WELLER, Jacob, son of Daniel Weller, was born September 16, 1704 at Dietenshausen in Berleburg; he married in 1726 (sic) Anna Margaret Koehn who died at Skippack, of the dropsy; he came to America 1737, arriving at Philadelphia in the fall of that year; thence they went to look up his friends, particulary John Peitzel, which led him into the Crice (Kreutz) Creek settlement. Thence the family came here in 1742, and he was present at our first communion. He married secondly in March (sic), 1738 at Crice Creek to Maria Barbara Wilhide (called 'a blessed vessel'); she had previously been the wife of (Leonhart) Vieruhr; she died July 17, 1754. He married thirdly on August 13, 1755 Anna Elizabeth Krieger, whose father was a citizen at Bettelhausen; she was born in 1719 at Bettelhausen in Wittgenstein; she died April 2, 1800. As his years advanced, he retired and spent most of his time reading the Holy Scriptures and other edifying books, praying for the welfare of his children and grandchildren, and was a beloved and venerable patriarch, of exemplary career. He was healthy all his life until the 27th of April, when he became completely helpless. He died May 8, 1794 and was buried May 10 in the burial ground in his orchard. His wife, who was very ill this spring, was able to take care of him, for which he was very happy and grateful." -- Record also states that a son and a daughter died before the father.
Johann Jacob Weller from Diedenshausen, in 1737, stepped off the Andrew Galley ship in Philadelphia, a member of the German Reformed Church. By the time he settled in Western Maryland in what became Mechanicstown, Weller had become an active Moravian. For a time, traveling Moravian ministers actually conducted services in Weller's home. His cousin, Johannes Weller, who also settled in what was later the Mechanicstown area, however was associated with the Lutherans. York Moravian Church Record:
"Anna Elizabeth Weller of Jacob and Anna Elizabeth, born May 22, 1756, baptized June 27. Sponsors: Catharina Herbach, Maria Elizabeth Krieger."
