    • Owned property: 1761, Virginia, British Colonial America; 276 acres, head of Grassy Lick Run, Calfpasture, purchased from John Ward
    • Will: 6 Feb 1787, Rockbridge, Virginia

    Notes:

    Joseph Walkup (Vachub) 1719-1787 purchased 378 acres on the Calfpasture River for five shillings, the equivelancy to about 83 cents at today's money. Who would not wish to purchase this fertile valley land, now, at such a price? Joseph lived most of his life in Augusta County. But, when his will was written, he lived in Rockbridge, due to boundary changes.

    During Joseph's life, on the Calfpasture, important historical events occurred. He lived through the French and Indian Wars, in which much of the western frontier was violently assaulted. He must have endured having neighbors and, perhaps family, killed and carried away by marauding Indians. When Joseph was about 49, the Ottawa Chief, Pontiac, led a spring uprising against the frontier in which hundreds of colonists along the western frontier were killed. Joseph's valley was no exception to these incursions. In 1765 Joseph turned in a report for provisions and impressed horses for the use of the militia. This indicates that he aided those frontiersmen who protectyed the borders of western Virginia from Indian invasions. A niece to Joseph's sister, Margaret (Walkup) Gay, declared that there was a stockade on the Calfpasture during the French and Indian War. Such a fortification would have made for close ineraction among all Calfpasture residents.

    Before Joseph and his family had time to recuperate from war, disruption began anew. According to one source, Walkups were born soldiers and their names were found on the Virginia rolls in all her struggles. All the Walkups participated in the American Revolution. A 1783 record credits to Joseph; 22 horses hire, 5 bushels oats, 5 buschels corn, all as aid to the war. Joseph's son, John, fought with Francis Marion who took from the Bristish much of South Carolina. Joseph's brother, James Alexander became a Captain.

    Joseph's will was written in 1784. Money that he left was both actual and due debts, equaling around 700 dollars. He left personal items to his daughters, granddaughters and grandsons. He left his large Bible to his daughter Rebecka. Joseph left 300 acres of land to his son, Robert, and 48 acres with the dwelling house, meadow and orchard to grandson, Nathaniel Walkup 1777-1850. Relatives, James Steavenson and Joh Gay were appointed Executors. Witesses included Brasten Castham, Samuel Corrick and Matthew Vachub. It is not what Joseph left that is so important, but the simple fact that he left it in written form. His will helps to identify relationships between early Rockbridge families as well as to identify those family members that relocated to other parts.

    Following the death of their father, Robert (1748-1824) and Christopher (1744-1818) moved to the Greenbrier Valley. It is said they visited that area before the Revolution. Apparently, they liked what they found. Robert sold his land, or a portion of it, to John Sterrit, according to Rockbridge records. Robert moved his family to Greenbrier County, West Virginia and lived, eventually, in the Meadow Bluff area. His son Nathaniel married Margaret Moore and raised his family in Greenbrier and Nicholas Counties in West Virginia.

    Notes:

    Shown in some records as Whitesitt or Whitsitt. Whitesides (sic) records were furnished to Johnson and Smith by John Preston Stockton. Following Notes by Larry Whiteside: William Whitesides emigrated to America in 1735 with his 10 brothers, to Chester and Lancaster, PA. Probably landing originally at the Quaker Settlement at Burlington, West Jersey, on the river above Philadelphia. May have been born in Ulster, Kindare County, Ireland. ??? Some sources have his birth year as 1710. I feel 1699 is the most accurate. May have died in (Trion) Tyron County, NC. ??? BURIED: Unmarked grave in family cemetery County Road 1730, 1/2 mile north of Route 226. May have been married in Peoua, Lancaster County, PA in 1735. ??? Or may have been married about 1732. ??? Some ancestors have the marriage as about 1720 in Ireland (I feel the latter is inaccurate.) This branch of the family is known as the "Stockton Whitesides". Descent is Scotch-Irish, A Scotch Covenanter Presbyterian. All of his children and most grandchildren were Baptist showing the influence of Elizabeth Stockton, his wife. In 1739, came to the South Fork of Mechum's Creek, Goochland County, VA, (became Albermarle County in 1744) today named Whiteside's Creek which empties into the south fork of Mechum's River, Albermarle County, VA. In 1767, moved to Amherst and Augusta COunties in VA. In 1772, shortly before the American Revolution with his family he moved to Tryon County, (later called Rutherford County) NC, adjoining the Broad River, the location was called Whiteside's Settlement because of the number of Whiteside families that lived there. Today this location is called Golden Valley, Township, R.R. 2, Bostic, Rutherford County, NC (this gives credence to the 1735 Peoua, Lancaster County, PA marriage if you assume he was married prior to coming to VA ((this marriage issue is yet to be resolved)), this also shows why some have his death in Tyron County and others have it as Rutherford County ie the name change). A farmer by occupation. Military service included the Albermarle County, VA, Militia, in Sept 1758 to fight Indians, as a member of Captain James Neville's company in the French and Indian War. Elizabeth (nee Stockton) and William Whiteside, Sr.,
    from Davis Stockton of Albemarle County, Virginia,
    by Jerry J. Stockton

    Elizabeth appears to have been born about 1720, probably in England. Her father, Davis Stockton, appears to have been born about 1685 in England. Stockton is an English name and there were a large number of Stockton families living in England in the 1600s. It also appears that his children were also born in England as they all have English given names and none have distinctly Irish or Scottish given names. There is no evidence that the Davis Stockton family ever lived in Ireland.

    It appears that in about 1740, at the age of about 20, she married William Whiteside in Goochland (now Albemarle) County, Virginia. It appears that Elizabeth (nee Stockton) and William Whiteside's son Davis Whiteside was born about 1741 near Whiteside's Creek, a branch of Mechum's River. This is where the town of Batesville in now located. They moved to what was then Tryon (now Rutherford) County, North Carolina, sometime before the Revolutionary War. William Whiteside's will is dated October 24, 1777. It is thought that Elizabeth died in Rutherford County, North Carolina, on October 31, 1791.

    (c.1740) It appears that in about 1740 Elizabeth Stockton, a daughter of Davis Stockton, married William Whiteside in Goochland (now Albemarle) County, Virgina. Davis Stockton is known to have been living in Goochland County, Virginia, by 1737.

William Gooch"

    William Whiteside was probably living Goochland County before his March 15, 1741, patent. It appears that William Whiteside and Elizabeth Stockton met and married in Goochland (now Albemarle) County, Virginia.

    (c.1741) The first child of Elizabeth (nee Stockton) and William Whiteside, Davis Whiteside, appears to have been born in about 1741 in Goochland (now Albemarle) County, Virginia.

    William Whiteside, 250 acres on both sides of Green River, Mecklenburg (now Rutherford) County, North Carolina, August 8, 1765. Notes:

    Capt. James Chitwood, son of Matthias and Mary (Key) Chitwood and brother to Richard Chitwood, was a Tory during the Revolutionary War and was captured and hung after the battle of King's Mountain NC. "The names of the condemned Tories were --- Colonel Ambrose Mills, Capt. James Chitwood, Capt. Wilson, Capt. Walter Gilkey, Capt. Grimes, Lieutenant Lafferty, John McFall, John Bibby, and Augustine Hobbs.

    They were swung off the Gallows Oak, three at a time, and left suspended at the place of execution. According to Lieutenant Allaire's acocunt, they died like soldiers --- like martyrs, in their own and friends' estimation. "These brave but unfortunate Loyalists', says Allaire, 'with their latest breath expressed their unutterable detestation of the Rebels, and of their base and infamous proceedings; and, as they were being turned off, extolled thier King and the British Government, Mills, Wilson, and Chitwood died like Romans.....The poor Loyalist leaders had been left swinging from the sturdy oak upon which they had been executed. No sooner had the Whigs moved off, than Mrs. Martha Bickerstaff, the wife of Capt. Aaron Bickerstaff who had served under Ferguson, and been mortally wounded at King's Mountain, with the assistance of an old man who worked on the farm, cut down the nine dead bodies. Eight of them were buried in a shallow trench, some two feet deep; while the remains of Capt. Chitwood were conveyed by some of his friends, on a plank, half a mile away to Benjamin Bickerstaff's, where they were interred on a hill still used as a grave-yard." Taken from the book "Kings Mountain and it's Heroes", by Lyman C. Draper
    As depicted in the book Descendants of Matthias Chitwood compiled by I.O. Chitwood;

    James Chitwood is the son of Matthias Chitwood and Mary Key.

    7) Amos born 1768 married Prudence Lattimore 1793 and died in 1843 in IN

    James Chitwood was a Loyalist and Officer (Captain) during the Revolutionary War living in South Carolina.

    As depicted in the book King's Mountain and its Heroes by Lyman C Draper;

    The Battle of Kings Mountain (SC) was a decisive battle and turning point in the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution. British Officer Colonel Ferguson had taken up position on the top of the mountain with Loyalist militia from South Carolina but were overwhelmed in the battle on October 7, 1780 by Patriot militia "Over Mountain Men". Over 400 Loyalist were killed or wounded in the surprise attack by the Patriots. Ferguson was the only British soldier and he died in the battle that lasted about an hour. Over 600 were captured including 9 officers. One of those officers was Captain James Chitwood.

    The Patriots retreated quickly with the prisoners north into NC. The set up camp and tried and sentenced 39 men to be executed in an infamous proceeding. Three at a time they were hung from a large oak tree known after as the Gallows Oak. Captain James Chitwood was in the first group of three to be hung. With nine hanging from the tree, and three more ready to go a disturbance occurred that caused the hanging to be discontinued and the remaining to be pardoned.

    The men had been left swinging from the sturdy oak but as soon as the Patriot force moved off, the wife of Captain Biggerstaff (or Bickerstaff) who served under Ferguson and been mortality wounded at the battle, cut them down with the help of a farm hand. Eight were buried in a shallow trench and the remains of Captain Chitwood were taken to the Biggerstaff farm and interred on a hill there.
