William appeared in the will of his grandfather and by the advice of his family, in Deed on 2 September 1674, his estate at Providence, Rhode Island, he sold to his Uncle Stephen Arnold.

In the DH Carpenter's book on the R.I.Branch
"William acted as one of the proprietors after the death of his brother Joseph until 1706 when his nephew Joseph reached legal age. The Town Records shows very clearly that he was a large land owner and prominent in the affairs of the plantation.
He was a blacksmith by trade, and had his homestead and shop in that part of town known as "Duck Pond." He sold this property in 1720, and probably moved to Westchester county, though he still had landed interests at Musketa Cove as late as 1734."

JOSEPH2 CARPENTER (William1 of Providence) was born about 1638 (aged 26 in 1664), probably at Providence Plantation (not 1635, in England), and died intestate between 15 or 17 February 1682[/3] and 15 March 1683/4 at Musketa Cove (then a plantation in Oyster Bay Township; now the town of Glen Cove, Nassau County), Long Island, Province of New York. He married first, probably at Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony, ca. 1658 (not on 21 April 1659), HANNAH3 CARPENTER, born at Weymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony, on 3 2nd month [April] 1640 and died not long before 8 June 1673, probably at Musketa Cove, daughter of William2 and Abigail (Briant) Carpenter of Rehoboth. Joseph married second, probably at Oyster Bay, by 2 September 1674, ANN WEEKES, baptized at New Amsterdam (now New York City), Colony of New Netherland, on 9 July 1651 and died at Musketa Cove after 24 4th month [June] 1713 (perhaps by 12 6th month [August] 1713), daughter of Francis and Elizabeth (______) Weekes of Salem and Dorchester, Massachusetts; Providence, Rhode Island; New Amsterdam; Gravesend, Long Island; and Oyster Bay (NEHGR 159:64n47, 67-68; PrTR 6:138, 141, 144, 147-48; PubRIHS 4:197; TAG 70:201, 204; RILE 1:47, 50-51; NYChR 29; WMM-MM A:24; FMM-VR 78; OBTR 1:99, 411-12, 640-41, 642-44, 2:702; see also BIRTH, DEATH, MARRIAGES, and COMMENTS sections, below; Hannah3 notes, DEATH and COMMENTS). BIRTH: On 3 May 1656, Joseph2 Carpenter witnessed a deed of Pawtuxet (Providence) land from his maternal uncle Stephen Arnold to Joseph's father, William1 Carpenter (PrTR 1:44-45). It has been supposed that Joseph was then an adult and thus was born about 1635, prior to his parents' emigration from England (see, for example, Carpenter [1901] 8-9, 30, 31; Arnold Mem 9, 52; RI Roots 13:75). It is wrong, however, to assume that Joseph was an adult when he witnessed the deed. Witnesses as young as fourteen (the age of discretion) are found in early New England records. When on 9 February 1657 Joseph, his brother Ephraim, and sister Lydia witnessed a deed of land at Pawtuxet (Warwick) from an Indian sachem to their father, at least two and probably all three siblings were minors (see WarTR2 80-81; RESIDENCES, below). The most reliable approximation of Joseph's birth date is based on a deposition that he and Benjamin Smith gave on 16 October 1664 (HP 72-73). Its description of Joseph as "Aged 26 yeeres" implies a birth year of about 1638 and Providence as his probable birthplace (see William1 of Providence notes, RESIDENCES). For a detailed discussion of this and related issues--the immigration of William1 Carpenter of Providence (ca. 1636, as a single man) and his marriage to Elizabeth Arnold (ca. 1637, probably at Providence)--see William1 of Providence sketch, IMMIGRATION, which incorporates and supplements NEHGR 159:67-68..

DEATH: On 22 November 1682, Joseph Carpenter, on behalf of Samuel Till(i)er, paid ?20 to John Robbins (OBTR 1:128-29). Two Musketa Cove proprietors' records, respectively dated 13 and 15 February 1682[/3], indicate that Joseph was then still living (OBTR 1:640-41). (Both follow on the same page a record dated 28 December 1682.) Three others, apparently recorded at or very near the same time as the foregoing ones, probably extend by two days the 15 February date, the latest on which Joseph is known with certainty to have been alive: all three are dated 17 February 1682 [probably 1682/3] (OBTR 1:642-44). On 15 March 1683/4, William1 Carpenter of Providence added to his will a codicil in which his son Joseph is described as deceased (PrTR 6:138-48, at 147-48).

According to Daniel H. Carpenter, "[t]he records show that in September 1683, Ephraim Carpenter was absent from Musketa Cove, having gone to Rhode Island apparently on business connected with the death of his brother Joseph, who had died a little while earlier in 1683" (Carpenter [1901] 315n [see also 42]). While Joseph's death apparently did occur in 1683--perhaps by September (see below)--the records do not show what author Carpenter claims. A record listing Oyster Bay inhabitants (including those at Musketa Cove) and their respective estates, dated 29 September 1683, ends with a statement signed by Edmund Wright, deputy constable: "The Inhabytants being at this time sikly and not sending in their lists, According to order, the ouersears, _ye Constable being Absent at roadislond_ did laye A valewation upon Euery mans Eastate to ye best of there vnderstanding According to law" (emphasis added) (OBTR 1:691-92). Having been elected the previous 2 April, the Oyster Bay constable at this time was John Weeks (OBTR 1:264). The nearest Ephraim Carpenter came to being Oyster Bay constable was on 2 April 1681, when Caleb Wright was named to that office, and Ephraim became deputy constable for the plantation at Musketa Cove (OBTR 1:240-41). Thus it was John Weeks, not Ephraim Carpenter, who was "Absent at roadislond" in September 1683.

    Notes:

Moses and Micah Mudge were the two sons of Jarvis Mudge. Their dates of birth and the name of their mother is contested.
Accoridng to one popular theory, recounted by a couple of 19th century family genalogies, there were both born to Rebecca [unknown] between the time of her marriage to Jarvis in 1649 and Jarvis's death in 1653. This theory is challenged by three facts: a) Moses and Micah were not mentioned in Hartford court documents recording the conviction and execution for witchcraft of Rebecca and Nathaniel Greensmith -- only the names of Rebecca's 2 daughters by her first marriage to Abraham Elsing; b) A 1681 document recorded by an Oyster Bay court (see source for that year) says that Moses was 41 years old at the time -- giving him a birth year 9 years before Jarvis married Rebecca; c) From the will of George Steele, Moses and Micah appear to have been his grandchildren -- but there is no source to suggest that George Steele had a daughter named Rebecca.

For these reasons, the theory which is now favored by genealogists is that Moses and Mican where children from a previous marriage of Jarvis Mudge -- to Mary Steele. This theory overlooks a) the likelihood that Rebecca's relatives would not want to be mentioned in court documents and might thus make alternative arrangements for raising Moses and Micah; b) 19th centry genealogies suggest that Moses and Mican were born to Rebecca in 1650 and 1652 respectively.
p entd. in Oyster Bay about 1729.

Moses Mudge lived his adult life in Oyster Bay, New Yorrk. His name appears numberous times in Oyster Bay town records (see source for 1681). One 19th century genealogical history says that he appeared as a witness in 1664. This sources is sometime cited as documentaiton of his age of 13 at the time. A 13 year old witness? Until that source can be reviewed, it seems best to assume that the source itself makes no mention of his age or year of birth (that these were presumed by the 19th century author).

Moses was a shoemaker. Feb. 19, 1690. He was commissioned Lieutenant of Oyster Bay Company, Queens Co.

    Biography
Mary Steele was bp. Fairstead 7 May 1620, d/o George Steele. Generally it has been accepted that there was no further record of Mary Steele.[1]

A 2006 article[2] names Mary as the probable Steele daughter who married Jarvis Mudge. Daughter Margery (bpt. 1612) would be the other choice but chronologically Mary fits better.

An alternate explanation is that the George Steele daughter who married Jarvis Mudge was Rebecca, relict of Abraham Elsen, later married to Nathaniel Greensmith, except that George Steele did not mention a daughter Rebecca in his will.

Martha Hannison was called granddaughter and Micah and Moses Mudge were named in George Steele's 1663 will, but a relationship was not named for the boys. The boys place in the will indicates they may also be grandchildren. It was speculated that Hannison was the married name of the granddaughter Martha.[3]

An entry in the Journal of John Winthrop Jr.: "1 Jan 1668/9 Hinderson Eliz 6 y: daught of Hinderso[n] Scotchma[n] at 30 mile Iland hath constant looseness married Mary Mudge her sister kinswoma[n] of serg:Wat[s] wife ... "[4] We know that Sgt Watt's wife, Elizabeth, was a daughter of George Steele. Elizabeth Hinderson was the daughter of John Henryson and Martha his wife, leading to the conclusion that Mary Mudge and Martha Henryson were sisters.[2]

Mary died before Dec 1649 when it is known that Jarvis had remarried the widow of Abraham Elsen.[2]

Peter Lott , son of Peter and Gertrude Lott, was born about 1660/70; died 1721, Hopewell, N.J.; married Nishe (Dutch for Ann, Anna or Hannah, and more frequently spelled Neatje, Natje, Annatje, etc?)- 1698. Hempstead, L.I., both Peter and his wife Nishe Lott, appear in the Census Records. As Peter was married at this time, and head of a family, he very
evidently was not the Peter, born 1682, nor the one born 1690, as claimed by numerous authorities.'
In 1703, he was a resident of Newtown,L.I., and in 1708, purchased land in Maidenhead, N.J., at which time he may have moved there. His records are as follows 1703 March 3. Peter Lott of Newtownand Nisie his wife of the one part
and Nicholas Berrien of the sameplace of the other part sd Peter Lott and his wife for and in consideration of the sum of 700 Pounds and sold unto Nicholas Berrien land .
His will dated 1720. Dec. 11. Peter Lot was as follows: "In the Name of God Amen. I, Peter Lot of Hopewell, in the county of Hunterdon and in the province of NewJersey, Yeoman, being sick and weak in body the of sound mind and
memory, thanks be given to God, Therefore calling to mind the mortality of mybody and the shortness and uncertainty of human life Do make and .......this mylast will and Testamentviz: Mywill is that mylands and Tenaments both here and at Burlington be sold by my Executors and my debts paid out of same. And I give and bequeath unto Nishe my dearly beloved wife one Third part to her and her heirs and assigns forever. Item: I give and be queath unto my five children
all the remainder of myestate goods chattels to go equally (except six shillings which I give my son Peter more than to the rest), Moreover mywill is that my Dearly beloved wife aforesaid, and my loving sons Peter Lot and John Phillips be Executors.

    Birth order of Peter's Children
Teunis G. Bergen gives us the names of 6 children of Peter Lott and Gertrude _______ : Engelbert, Catrina, Peter, Abraham, Hendrick, and Johannes. If Bergen is correct, it would have been traditional for Peter to have named his eldest son after Peter's own father, and we can assume that his own patronymic was "Engelbertszen" as well.

Johannus married Nishe "Anna" WITT, DeWitt in 1693 in New York. Nishe (daughter of Pieter Jans WITT and Dorothea VOLCKERS) was born in 1662 in Hempstead, Nassau County, New York; died after 1721 in New York, New York. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
