    Notes:

See "Owen Family News," March 2005, Vol 20, Issue 1, p. 6, "WHO WAS ELIZABETH ROWLAND OWEN?" by Jane Owen Hillard: "When Elizabeth Rowland married Richard B. Owen (probably in Surry County, VA), she became part of the family of the storied Goronwy Owen, an obscure but honored name all over the South. Goronwy (variant spellings: Gronow, Gronau, Goronoway, et al.) was born poor in Wales in 1723. [Please note that, by that date, the other Richard Owen (born in Virginia and totally unrelated to Goronwy and his descendants), with his wife Elizabeth, had produced at least 9 of their 11 children.]"

NOTE: I've skipped two paragraphs here about Goronwy to save space. ....resuming....

"So who is Richard B. Owen (by the way, the B stands for Brown), who married Elizabeth Rowland? Some say he was a son by Goronwy's second marriage. Let us here point out--as an earlier editor of the newsletter did, years ago--sixteenth, seventeenth, and early eighteenth century parents gave their children one one name (besides the surname). By the end of the eighteenth century, there was such confusion caused by naming children for parents, uncles, and cousins that a second give name was introduced. But you knew that!

Richard B. Owen (born so many years after MY Richard Owen had DIED) and his wife Elizabeth Rowland Owen, never lived in Halifax County, and I can assure you that Richard Owen of Halifax County never lived in Surry or Brunswick County. My newly-found 'cousins' and I laugh about our Owen male ancestors who marry late or produce children into old age. But I will never believe that one of them married a woman 150 years his junior. They're not that virile!

Now, the corollary question: Who was Elizabeth Owen, wife of Richard Owen of Halifax County, Virginia? Who was her father, and what was her maiden name? Answer: We'll never know."

Ran out of space; please read Jane's article.

Bottom line: Richard Owen's wife was NOT named Sarah Elizabeth Rowland!!!!! Elizabeth Unknown is correct.

    Notes:

SAMUEL LUCKETT was born Abt. 1650 in Kent County, England, and died July 18, 1705 in Port Tobacco, MD. He DID NOT marry ELIZABETH HUSSEY 1684, daughter of THOMAS HUSSEY and Johanna Porter. She was born 1667 one year before Sarah Hines Luckett was born... so those insisting on that lineage - it is doubtfull...

Evidence suggests he married Mary Elizabeth Gardiner born 1643 first, but we still need further confirmation... THEN, he married Elizabeth Hussey 2nd and had four boys mentioned below.

Samuel settled in Maryland before 1678.

Samuel was a member of the Maryland Provincial Court during 1696, he signed a Petition to the King as a member of the Provincial Court and as a Civil Officer of Charles County. Since Catholics could not hold public office indicates that he was a member of the Church of England.

At the Prerogative Court held in Charles County during 1684, "Appeared Samuel Luckett of Charles County who intermarried with the relict and administrator of John Gardiner and showeth that he never intermeddled with goods". Here proof exists of his marriage to the widow, and also for the belief that he had interfered with the estate of her deceased husband. (Harry Wright Newman)

When Samuel died his estate was valued at 829 pounds, 13 shillings, 3 pence and included 7 white indentured servants but no slaves.

Luckett and Hussey Research in Port Tobacco

His four sons were William, Samuel, Thomas Hussey, and Thomas. No known justification is apparent for the first name--William. Samuel was his namesake, while Thomas Hussey was the full name of his father-in-law. But the fact that he named his youngest son Thomas Hussey when one was already baptized Thomas is important. In those days the naming of children was significant and they were not given because they met with the fancy of the parents. One son was most assuredly named after the paternal grandfather, and it is not believed to be William. It was most likely Thomas, a name common to the Lucketts of County Kent, England.
