    James Oliphant of Greene County, TN (28 Apr 1776-31 Oct 1855) was the great grandson of Duncan Oliphant the immigrant. This James was married to Jane Rankin (20 Sep 1782-12 Apr 1844).     Notes:

    He was a gunsmith by trade, but afterward purchased a farm, and turned his attention to farming. Doug Goodman has death on 21 May 1823. According to Reynolds (ref 13), 1821 is the date of death in court records. 1829 is on stone. DAR references have 1823. Buried in Ebeneezer Cemetery with Hannah. Was in revolutionary war. See references 2, 3, & 4. Roster of Soldiers and Patriots of the American Revolution Buried in TN by Bates lists him marrying Sarah Pruden 1st in 1775 then Hannah at a later date. Membership Roster and Soldiers of the TN Society of the DAR lists the marriage to Hannah in 1775. Info from Doug Goodman lists 1775 as the date John married Hannah. Not sure which is correct, and which children are by which wife. It would seem Hannah was the second wife, as he is buried with her in Tennessee.

    JOHN OLIPHANT - Born January 2, 1750, New Jersey; Died 1823, Greene Co., Tennessee; Married 1775, Hannah Amos, born Jan. 14, 1756, died 1814. John Oliphant is reported in the auditors account, page 107, of official records in New Jersey, State House, to have been paid for sundry services and for riding Express No. 19, Date 1777. During the year 1778 he moved to Washington District, N.C. The place where he settled was later Greene Co., Tenn. He was a neighbor of John Sevier and being a Wagon Maker and a Gun Smith, he assisted in fitting out troops for the expedition to King's Mountain, and either accompanied them, or helped protect the settlement during their absence. He was on the First Tax list of Greene Co., 1783. He was given a Land Grant for Revolutionary Service, recorded at Nashville, Tenn. For sundry claims and for Militiary expedition with Waggons, for ten days, by order of Teneral Waddel, it was resolved by the Convention of N.C. that these claims be allowed, and the were signed by Martin Armstrong. (Vol 9, page 485, 487, N.C. records, Adj. Gen. Office N.J., Records of Land Commissioner, Nashville, Tenn.;and Family Bible National No. 126439).     Stout made his will. An added codicil stated that Sarah was dead in 1768.They were then in Loudon County, VA. Ephraim was listed in the 1782 Tax List of Loudoun County.

    Ephraim Oliphant (1717-1794), the son of Duncan Oliphant (1682-1734) of Hunterdon Co., NJ, was the father of nine children, among them John Oliphant (1750-1823), who married Hannah Amos (1756-1814) in Loudoun Co., VA, in 1775. Ephraim was born in Staten Isl., NY, in 1717, and moved with his parents to East Amwell, Hunterdon Co., NJ, around 1721. There, he married Sarah Higgins Stout (1725-1768), of Amwell, in 1743. She was the daughter of Freegift Stout (1693-1769) and Mary Higgins (1698-1773), both of Hunterdon Co. Some time in the 1760s, they moved their family to Loudoun Co., VA, where Ephraim died in 1794.
