    Notes:

Died 1764-1772? Came to America 9/29/1733 from the Palatinate in Germany with his wife, Elizabeth Catharina, and three children--John, Philip, and a daughter (name unknown). Settled as a farmer near Appel's church in upper Saucon township in what was then Bucks County, but which later became Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. Buried in Blue Church near Coopersburg, Lehigh Co., PA. His wife died 5/21/1758 and he married on 9/13/1760 the "widow Magdelena Bernert."

At an Appel centenary celebration held at Saegerstown, PA, on 7/15/1886 (dating from the birth on 7/15/1786 of Andrew Appel, fourth generation in America), there was read a letter from Andrew's son, Thomas Gilmore Apple, to his brother Joseph, in which he said:

"...I think I must give the origin of the Appel name. Prof. Dubbs told me what it was, but I did not credit it, and so I asked him for his authority. He gave me a learned German work in which family names are traced back, according to philosophical laws, to their origin, and I found he was right. Appel comes from Adelbold, meaning a bold, noble man. For the sake of brevity, and ease in pronunciation, it was changed gradually into Adbold, Appold, Appel, Apel, Abel, and then by the school masters into Apple. The wild chief, who first received this nickname, roved--honorably, I hope--away back in the dark ages--through the forests of Saxony, where some of this name still live, who claim they are his descendents. Of course, it is not to be supposed that all who bear this name in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France are his descendents. All his peasants and followers--as in other cases--came to be called Appels. I do not think we have any noble blood about us; and I hope it is not so; but sometimes I have been afraid that this may be the case, because I have found out by experience that I have some bad blood myself and it has given me a good deal of trouble to get clear of it. The old Saxon chiefs had a great deal of bad blood about them."

John married Elizabeth Catharina WAGNER on 8 Feb 1723 in Evangelische Kirche Pfungstadt, Hessen, Germany. Elizabeth (daughter of Jacob WAGNER and Anna Gertrud MOELLER) was born about 1699 in Pfungstadt, Pfalz, Germany; died on 21 May 1758 in Somerset, Pennsylvania. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
