r and Minerva(Bennett) Udell, attended district school, Westerloo, Albany, New York,until 16 years of age. Married, Springfield, Massachusetts 23 Aug 1864,Annie M. Pease. Children: Frank L, Edna, Lillian Q. Served in UnionArmy 30th unattached company of heavy artillery (of Springfield,Massachusetts) from August 1864 to close of war. Came to St. Louis in May, 1867, to establish a "branch of the business ofhis brother, C.G Udell, who was a manufacturer of ladders and woodenwarein Chicago. In 1875 consolidated that business with firm of Udell,Schmieding & County, who retired from business in 1882; in 1883established firm of Udell & Crunden, and in 1891 incorporated the UdellWooden Ware County, in which continued until 1899, when entered theUdell-Predock Manufacturing County, of which has been president from itsincorporation. Member of Western Traveler's Association. Republican.Member of Legion of Honor, Royal Arcanum, Independent Order of UnitedWorkmen, Woodmen of the World. Death certificate also confirms birth date and birth location. Frontpage of the July 26, 1926, St. Louis Globe-Democrat states :Matthias R.Udell, Pioneer St. Louis Manufacturer, Dies" Article describes him as adistinguished St. Louis business man.

s not appear in1850 Census returns for Westerloo (which gives children by name andages). 1840 Census does list a male, age 10 to 15, and possibly one age15 to 20, although this older child may just be a dirt mark on the page.No names are given in 1840 return, so no way of knowing who anyindividuals are. Since his middle name is Gardner, suspect he is theoldest son, possibly the one that is 10 to 15 in 1840 Census.

, New York,birth would Have been about 1800. 1850 Census, which is much morecomplete, states that Gardner was a farmer, and the land value of hisfarm was $1800.

Pen and ink drawings over sofa at CConnecticut are reportedly portraitsof Gardner and Minerva (Bennett) Udell. At one time they hung in thehome of Mathias Row Udell on Vernon Avenue in St. Louis.
