451 !Source: Article appearing in the Hickman County Times, 13 Dec 1990, upon the dedication of the Ponder Cemetery in Bon Aqua Springs, Hickman Co, TN, where Rev. War Veteran of SC Militia, Abner J. Ponder, is buried. On this occasion a Veteran headstone, marking Abner as a Rev. War Veteran, was placed in the Cemetery where Abner was buried.

Jerry Ponder of MO provided me with land plats from SC. After the Rev. War Col. Robt Anderson was given quite a tract of land to grant to members of his Regiment. One of Abner's plots given in 1783/84 was in the Ninety Six District, just North of Abbeyville District, near the present day town of Anderson, SC. Living near to Abner's grant in the Ninety Six District was Benjamin Green. Then living near Abner's grant in the Abbeyville District was Robert Green. These two Greens must have been in Col. Anderson's Regt in the Rev War and are most likely related to Abner's first wife, Jane Green. Members of the Green family moved to Hickman Co, TN, and lived next to Abner Ponder and some of them moved on to Ripley Co, MS, with Abner's descendents.

Along with Abner, James, Amos, and John Ponder were all given Rev. War land
grants by Col. Anderson. They all settled on good lands very near to each other in SC which means that they were probably brothers. It is almost certain that John Ponder was the son of Danield Ponder who m Jemina Bennett.
There has been no proof thart the others, including Abner, were Daniel and
Jemina's sons, but all evidence points that way.

Abner had plenty of land, but didn't seem to settle down until he got to Bon Aqua, TN. He was in the Rev War until 1781 then was granted land in Ninety Six District in 1784. He was in virginia briefly and was there in 1785 as Reuben was born there. Then in l1786 he received a grant in Abbeyville Districrt, but in 1787 or 1788 he was in Georgia, as Thomas was born there. His grant in SC was almost on the bank of the Savannah River, so actually all he had to do to move from SC to GA was to cross the river. He may have had land and businesses on both sides of the river.

Daniel was

there is no
will to be found, it is supposed that Daniel died about 1817 and
left this land
to his heirs. Daniel's name does not appear in the 1820 census.
Dan.aiel's
wife is believed to have been Elizabeth Oxford as Daniel and
Elizabeth deeded

Jerry notes that James Madison m Charlotte, last name unknown, often
written as
Chalot. They had at least four children. He spent some time in the
Tenn
Militia and in 1834 was a Captain in the 36th Regiment. In 1836 he
was elected
a Magistrate for Hickman County at only 26 or 27 years. He and his
family
moved to Ripley County, Missouri, about 1842, but he died by 1845,
leaving his
family to his wife to raise. Their oldest son Archibold Huston
Ponder raised a
family in Ripley Co, MO, but then moved to Truman, ARK. There is no

on 13 Jan 1888 Clarissa Webb signed a deed in Hickman Co, TN along

Perhaps descendants of Clarissa Ponder Perkins Webb may have the Abner
Ponder family Bible. Pat Saupe intends to try to locate it.

!Odalene Little Ponder in The Ponder of Europe and America, p 27,
notes
"At the age of 84, Clarissa gave an account of how she and her
little brother
watched their father's sheep as they grazed on "The Barrens." She
carried
a tin horn, so she could sound the alarm in case solves attacked.
If she
became lost, she was also supposed to sound the horn so that her
father could
find her. She also told of picking wild flowers and strawberries
around her
father's mill which was built in 1820 at the spring."

Newstory appearing in the Hickman County Times, 13 Dec 1989, notes
that
Catherine married Joseph Price, moved to MS, and a daughter, Mary
Polly,
married James Burden in GA and moved to Bon Aqua Springs in 1806.
She died
1817 and James Burden returned to GA briefly before moving to AL.

Jerry Ponder of MO feels certain that Catherine is from the first
marriage of
Abner Ponder and a full sister to Reuben and Thomas Ponder.
He notes in his draft for his new Ponder book that Joseph and
Catherine Price
may have moved to Hickman Co, TN, with the family of Abner Ponder,
but, if so,
were gone by 1820 although a John Price, an elderly man and his
wife, and a
William Price, 18-26 years old lived there in 1820 and part of those
families
later moved to Ripley Co, MO, with some of the sons of Abner Ponder.
Joseph
and Catherine were in MS for sure by 1823d, settling in Franklin Co,
not far
from Catherine's brothers, Reuben and Thomas. In MS they were
farmers. Joseph
served in the US Army with Andrew Jackson at New Orleans. Their

!Through Prodigy I learned from Robert Martin JDSW19B that Jannett
Patterson
(also spelled Pattison) m lst Henry Conyers of Stafford Co, VA.
Conyers was an
immigrant from England who was County Surveyor of Stafford County
and a
widower. Jannett was a maid in his houlehold and they had one child
prior to
their marriage and then had 3 children. Robert did not list their
children but
did note that he descends through Ann Holland Conyers, a dau of
Jannett and
Henry. I have sent him an electronic message asking for whatever
additional
information he might have on Jannett Patterson, as well as the names
of her
children from Henry Conyers.
