Laurence died on 20 July 1679 and was buried at Trinity Gask Parish Churchyard, Auchterarder, Perth and Kinross, Scotland.[1] This documentation also states year of birth as 1608. This person was mentioned in a book in 1679 with Marriage Banns.[2] Children mentioned in the record are: David 1643-1707 Andrew unk-1666 Laurence unk-1672 Archibald unk-1686 Patrick Other children are mentioned in other documentation (see below). Laurence, the eldest son of Laurence and Lilias Oliphant, was established as second Laird of Gask in August 1632. His Great Seal charter is dated 9th March 1633. He married eighteen months after his father's death Lilias, the eldest daughter of his cousin Patrick, sixth Lord Oliphant. [3] Laurence Oliphant was born about 1610 at Newton of Pitcains, Perthshire, Scotland to James and Marjorie Grahame Oliphant. He married Lilias Graham Oliphant April 10, 1634 at Innerwick, East Lothian, Scotland and their children were: Anna, Patrick, Lilias, Laurence, Andrew, Archibald, Charles, John, Andrew (again), David, Elizabeth and Charles (again). Laurence died July 20, 1679 at Scotland where he is presumed buried. With a selection of original documents from the charter chest at Gask in 1879. Book: Anderson, Joseph, Keeper of the National Museum of the Antiquaries of Scotland, The Oliphants in Scotland. With a selection of original documents from the charter chest at Gask Edinburgh : For private circulation; 1879; page: (104 of 542) Internet Archive (accessed 13 December 2024) (from Oliphants of Gask) The years of the married life of Laurence and Lilias Oliphant were certainly not without troubles. Laurence Oliphant himself seems to have been of a fairly peaceable disposition ; but he certainly was involved in the feud which caused the killing of Gilbert Gray in 1605. Patrick Gray of Bandirran includes him in the discharge he granted to Lord Oliphant in 1617. The William and Laurence Oliphant, styled of Gask, who were implicated in the murder of the boy Toscheach, of Monzievaird, in 1618, were uncles of the fifth lord not to be confused with Laurence of Ross and Lamberkin, and his brother, William of Orchardmill. The charter of the barony of Cask was on the old lines of that historic charter granted two hundred and seventy years before to "our beloved and faithful Walter Olyfaunt and his spouse, Elizabeth, our beloved sister." Lord Oliphant now gave a charter of Gask with all its woods and fishings, and special liberty of fishing in the water Earn for three days in forbidden time, "to be held of the King in blench ferm fee, for yearly rendering, if asked, at the feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist, of a chaplet of White Roses." When Laurence and Lilias are established in the House of Gask there rises about the records of them a sense of reality. They were in middle life. Jean and Margaret, their daughters, were still with them. All their sons were grown up. The days of their historical importance were past ; they were settling down to quieter times, to the serene life of country people, at a time when rights and property were beginning to be more respected. Now were formed those staunch friendships with other old families of Strathearn, the Hurrays, the Drummonds, the Graemes, the Robertsons, which were to outlast many generations. Doubtless, too, the Oliphants would be intimate with their neighbours and kinsmen across the Strath, six miles away the family of Montrose at Kincardine, where the seven children would be of about the same age as some of the Gask sons and daughters. All the married life of Laurence and Lilias Oliphant was passed in a time of peace ; Lilias alone was to see the "Great Troubles." Laurence Oliphant, the first Laird of Gask, died 22nd July 1632. He had been possessor of Gask only five years. The following is an extract of his will : "I, Laurence Oliphant of Gask, being seik in bodie, haill alwayis in spirit and of perfyt memorie . . . recommend my saull to God Almightie and ordeins my bodie to be bureit in the earth within the Kirk of Gask, reverently." He left a legacy to Lilias Drummond of Pitkellony his "oy" in remembrance of his love. His executors are to "cause bild above my buriell plaice ane sufficient and cumlie yle (aisle) with ane loft above the same." | OLIPHANT, Sir Laurence Of Gask (I2914)

| 410 | Biography Margaret was born in 1720. She passed away in 1804. At this juncture I am showing the parents are Walter Smiley born 1699-1751 and mother as Margaret Ann (unk) - not proven but certainly not as stated with others with different Bohoup iterations that aren't possible. Margaret married Samuel D. Lindsay on 19 Aug 1739 in Augusta, Virginia and together they had 8 children; Elinor Jane born 1740, Samuel born 1742, Walter born 1744, Moses born 1745, Matthew born 1751, Robert born 1752, William born 1755 and last John born 1756. Research Not to be confused with Margaret Ann Buhoup born 100 years later married to a different Samuel D. Lindsay, died in Pittsburgh, PA. Read the Pittsburgh Newspaper death notice for that Margaret Ann Lindsay 74 years old who died on 3 Feb 1905. A lot of confusion and mis-identified ancestors have been misplaced on this woman. There is speculation her mother Margaret who was married to Walter Smiley, remarried to a another John A. Bohoup and Margaret Ann Smiley as his adopted child may have adopted the name Buhoup - but at this juncture this can't be proven. Please advise if you find this true or disproved. Jim Carney. | 432 | Biography Mathew Lindsay lived in Virginia. Mathew was born in 1699. He passed away about 1791. Research His parents are believed to be James F. Lindsay and Martha Wright. Details on his wife is scant, but purported to be Martha Hutchins born 1697 died 1770. They are believed to have at least two children, Samuel D. Lindsay born 1720 and Matthew Lindsay born 1725. Mathew A. Lindsay appears in a mis-categorised military record (North Carolina, Revolutionary Pay Vouchers, 1779-1782) on 1 November 1780 in Hillsborough, Orange, North Carolina, United States. Follow the link for the document, and it reads: "State of North Carolina Orange County No. 47; This may Certify that as Commisioner for the County aforesaid I have Purchased from Mr. Mathew Lindsey one Fat Cow at the Prices ascertain in Spanish Milled Dollars by a Missive of Congress Dated 25th February 1780, Amounting in the whole to Eight & three quarters Spanish Milled Dollars..." Which was actually a receipt for selling a cow to the Orange County Government as opposed to Revolutionary Pay. Of course, the cow could have been meant for the use of the military. [1] Sources ? | 433 | Biography Michael was born in 1796[1]. His parents were Johann Schulke and Elisabeth Catharine Barts. All records of this family were in Polish and the family spoke, read and wrote in Polish. He married Marie Reinke in 1841 in Poland. Her birth year is estimated from the Prussia Poland church marriage record where it states Maria was 26yrs old estimated birth of 1815 and Michael estimated birth year 1796 at age 45.[2] Michael and Marie had at least 5 children and wonderusly four of the children were born in paired sets of twins; August Wilhem born 1842 [3], twin brother August Friedrich born 1842, Dorothe Ernstine born 1845[4] , and her twin sister Dorothy Christine [5], then August Friederich born 1942 died in 1946[6] before the next child August Gustav "Stutz" Schuelke who was born in 1849 [7]. On September 30, 1794, two years prior to Michaels birth, during the Kosciuszko Uprising, the troops of General Henryk Dabrowski defeated the Prussian army near Labiszyn and captured the town, which was defended by the Prussian garrison of Lieutenant Beyer. After the successful Greater Poland uprising of 1806, it was regained by Poles and included within the short-lived Duchy of Warsaw, and then re-annexed by Prussia after the duchy's dissolution in 1815. Another battle between Polish insurgents and the Prussian army near Labiszyn took place in 1848, during the Greater Poland uprising, as part of the Revolutions of 1848. That is the era that Johann "Stutz" Gustav Schulke was born into. There is evidence that some of the children of Michael left the area moving onto Berlin some years after the revollutions. Johann "Stutz" Gustav is the only migrate confirmed going to the United States in 1874 with his wife and newly formed family. Sources ? | 439 | Biography Nicholas Arnold was the father of William Arnold the immigrant to New England. There is no evidence that Thomas the son of Nicholas was Thomas the New England immigrant.[3] Birth and Parents Nicholas has no known parents.[3] Birth: September 29, 1550[citation needed][4] Birth: January 11, 1549[citation needed][4] Birth: There is no known record of his birth or his parents[3] Google maps link showing Northover (red marker), Ilchester to the south, Limington to the East, and Mulchelney to the West (home of Christian, dtr in law of Nicholas). Nicholas Arnold was born ca. 1550 in Northover, Somerset, England. Occupation Nicholas was a tailor, this is stated in his will[3] Many genealogies state that he lived for some time at Melcombe Horsey, and was later a citizen of Cheselbourne, but this refers to the invented Thomas Arnold, not to the real Nicholas Arnold. Marriages Nicholas married Alice Gulley about 1570, probably in Ilchester, Somerset, England.[5] She died in 1596.[3] Her issue listed by William her son are Tamzen, Joane, Margery, William, Robert and Elizabeth (born just before her death).[6] A child Agnes, dtr of Nicholas was buried. Also two baptisms with no father listed in the right time frame for Nicholas and Isbell, may be children or nephew and niece. He married 2nd Grace, named in his will[3] who was mother of his younger children, Thomas and Elenor and another. Two daughters were mentioned in the will of Nicholas,[3] but only Elenor is mentioned by her brother William.[6] Family Notes From William's family record[6] we have the following information "A Register, or true account of my owne agge, with my Mother, my Wife, my Brothers and Sisters, and Others of my frinds and acquantance." (Written by William Arnold)[6] Imprimis Alce Gully the Daughter of John Gully of Northouer. Who was my Mother. was Baptized ye 29: Septem 1553.[6] Tamzen, my Sister was Baptized the 4 of Jany. 1571. Tamzen m. a Hacker. Her children are listed.[6] Joane Arnold, my Sister was Baptized the 30 of Novermber in the yeare 1577. Joan's three children are listed.[6] Margery Arnold, my Sister was Baptized the 30 of August 1581[6] I William Arnold, their Brother was borne the 24 of June, 1587.[6] Robert Arnold, my Brother was Baptized the 18th of October, 1593.[6] Elizabeth Arnold my Sister was borne the 9 of April 1596.[6] Thomas Arnold my Brother, my Mother in lawes Sonne was baptized the 18 April 1599. Thomas' children are listed.[6] Elenor Arnold, my Sister was Baptized the 31 of July 1603.[6] Parish register of Northover, Somerset confirms baptism of Alice Gullye d/o John 29 Sept 1553. and Tomsine d/o Nicholas Arnold 4 Jan 1571.[3] From the Bishop's transcripts, Diocesesan Registry of Bath and Wells, Parish of Ilchester[3] 5 Oct 1595 Robert Hacker & Thomasine Arnoll married.[3] This would be Nicholas' oldest daughter. 1595 Agnes, dau of Nicholas Arnoll, buried.[3] A daughter of Nicholas not recorded by William, perhaps because of her early death? 12 April 1596 Isabell Arnoll baptized[3] Speculation asks the question are Isabell and Elizabeth the same person? If twins, they would both have been listed in the registry. No father is listed, so Isabell could be some other relation like a niece. 25 April 1596 Alice, wife of Nicholas Arnoll, tailor, buried[3] 15 Nov 1596 Nicholas Arnoll baptized.[3] Speculation: The date is too close to be another child of Nicholas, who's baptism was neglected until later. Did Nicholas himself get religion after the death of his wife? Maybe, except that when Tomsine was baptized she was baptized as daughter of Nicholas. In the New England churches, this would have indicated Nicholas was a member of the church. A nephew of Nicholas perhaps? 15 Oct 1635 George, son of Thomas and Jane Arnold, baptized.[3] A grandson of Nicholas? Death and Will Bishop's transcripts in the Diocesan Registry of Bath and Wells from the parish of Ilchester, record that Nicolas Arnold was buried 26 Jan 1622[3] The Will of Nicholas Arnold of Ilchester in the Countie of Somersett Tayler, 18 Jan. 1622 [1622/3]. To Grace Arnold my wief all my goods movable and unmovable w'thin and wth thout Dores to thintent she shall guid & bringe up my two youngest Daughters her Children and when it shall please god to take her out of this mortall lief to Dispose the said goods at her pleasure unto theis two Children. Inventory, L7. 16d 5d (Wells Registry, lib. 43, fo. 5.)[3] Children Tamzen, was Baptized the 4 of Jany. 1571.[6] Tamzen m. a Hacker.[6] 5 Oct 1595 Robert Hacker & Thomasine Arnoll married.[3] Her children are listed.[6] Joane Arnold, was Baptized the 30 of Novermber in the yeare 1577. Joan's three Hopkins children are listed.[6] Margery Arnold, was Baptized the 30 of August 1581[6] William Arnold, was borne the 24 of June, 1587.[6] m. Christian PEAK and sailed to North America in 1635 with his wife and four children.[7] Robert Arnold, was Baptized the 18th of October, 1593.[6] Agnes, dau of Nicholas Arnoll, was buried in 1595.[3] She not recorded by William, perhaps because of her early death? Elizabeth Arnold was borne the 9 of April 1596.[6] Thomas Arnold by Nicholas' second wife, Grace, was baptized the 18 April 1599. Thomas' children are listed.[6] A Thomas Arnold witnessed the will of Nicholas in 1622/3.[3] There is no evidence linking him to the Thomas Arnold who immigrated to New England.[3] Daughter, b. perhaps about 1601. In his will, Nicholas Arnold mentions his two unnamed youngest daughters, children of his second wife. Elenor Arnold, was Baptized the 31 of July 1603.[6] Sources ? | 442 | Biography Pal was born in 1897. He passed away in 1993. 2nd Born. Came to America when 15 years old (March 1913) and went to live with cousins near Chicago sometime after his mother died in 1904. Living in 1917 at 7018 Justine, Chicago, Illinois. Came from Pinkamiske, Vas, Hungary that was later known as Mischendorf, Burgenland, Austria after World War I (1917). Area comprises Germanic, Croatian and Hungarian heritages in area commonly known as Burgenland, Austria. Past Wehofers were known prior to 1850's as Vehhofers, but common spelling uniformly changed to Wehofer over 20-30 years, in nearly all families. Generations of Wehofers have spread over a relatively small area, with the highest concentrations in descending order: Wien (Vienna) Austria (30%), Mischendorf (6%), Rust (5%), Yspertac (3%), Tadten (3%), and so forth to lesser concentrations. Paul is an Americanised name spelling (originally Pal in Hungarian), upon coming to the USA. Paul married Clara and they operated a small limited bakery in the Chicago area for a few years during the wartime 40's. When they moved the family to Alpena, they started a larger bakery, bought lake front property at Hubbard Lake, bought a house and set up their oldest sons in the family business. Differences of opinion and relationship issues separated most of the older children from close ties to their parents, Paul and Clara and full reconciliation was never fully realized. Entry to Ellis Island, New York: Paul Wehoffer (SP!) arrived April 28, 1913 at age 16 from Pinkamilka Ungary (all their spelling not mine), ethnicity: Ungarn (Hungarian) German. Port of Departure Le Havre, Seine-Inferior, France on the ship Rochambeau. Going to brother Adolf (Step brother) in Chicago, 141 W. 45th St., Chicago, Ill.. Relative still in Hungary father Franz. Unknown if relative of Paul. I have copy of Pal Wehofer Hungarian Birth Registration from where registered on 12 May 1897 in Pinka-Miske. Details match recollections of William and Joyce Wehofer which leads to further verification of details through the Catholic Church records of his father Franz and his mother Aloisia. Meanwhile, back in Hungary the year after Pal emigrated to the US, World War I happened. Main articles: Austro-Hungarian entry into World War I and Hungary in World War I After the assassination of the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914, a series of crises escalated quickly. A general war began on 28 July with a declaration of war on Serbia by Austria-Hungary.[45] Austria-Hungary drafted 9 million soldiers in World War I, of which 4 million were from the kingdom of Hungary. During the First World War, Austria-Hungary fought on the side of Germany, Bulgaria and Ottoman Empire– the so-called Central Powers. They conquered Serbia easily, and Romania declared war. The Central Powers then conquered Southern Romania and the Romanian capital of Bucharest. In November 1916, Emperor Franz Joseph died; the new monarch, Emperor Charles I of Austria (IV. Károly), sympathized with the pacifists in his realm. Perhaps his scientific curiosity devoured his time more than the academic life. However, in 1678 Peter Dent, apothecary and botanist of Cambridge received a 'Lambeth Degree'. These were special degrees granted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, sometimes based on actual work and sometimes not. 'In some cases, the Lambeth degrees seem to have been conferred to give recipients respectability as physicians' It is possible that Peter Dent fell into this category. He was granted a MD, which he seemed to use in his connections with Cambridge. It would seem from what I have seen that he was principally self taught and this degree 'after the fact' gave his scientific pursuits that veneer of respectability that he might not otherwise have had." | 449 | Biography Phineas Cox was born in October 1764. Phineas is a close yDNA match to Samuel Cox (b. 1770) of Halifax County, Virginia. Phineas passed away in 1842. [1] His father is Samuel Cox and mother is Sarah Coleman whom his father married in May 1764. Phineas Cox, per his Revolutionary War Pension papers, was born in Halifax County, Virginia on October 10, 1764. Phineas states in his affidavit the birth date was recorded in his father's bible, which Phineas believed to be in the possession of his brother "out west". Phineas joined the American forces while long hunting on the Holstein. He was a resident of Henry County, Virginia at the time of enlistment and traveled by boat to Illinois, serving at O Post, caring for the pack horses. Phineas was about 14 years old when he joined with George Rogers Clark in March 1779, and served until 1780. Shortly after discharge, Phineas moved to Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, where he had been granted 640 acres for his service. Unfortunately, Phineas was too young to claim this land. However, it was here that Phineas meet Barbara Stump, daughter of prominent citizen and founder of Nashville, Frederick Stump, and per Barbara's Revolutionary War Widow's pension application, the two were married about 1783, at Fort Nashboro, "before there was much government" leaving no record of the marriage. By 1791, Phineas and John Cox, a believed brother to Phineas, are surveyors for E. M. Covington, and are now residing in Logan/Warren County, Kentucky. Phineas owns land on Chism Creek and can be found on tax lists and census records. Phineas was elected to the Kentucky State legislature in 1804 from Warren County and served under Governor Christopher Greenup, naming one of his sons after the Governor. It was here that Phineas and Barbara raised their family of 12 children, 5 sons and 7 daughters, and helped shape the Warren County, Kentucky area. Phineas died May 18, 1842, leaving no will, but an extensive estate record has been found, 230 plus pages. Barbary Stump Cox was granted an additional 160 acres as her Widow's Pension. Barbary died September 7, 1856, and she and Phineas are buried together on the Chism Creek Property, Warren County, Kentucky. Y-DNA from 14 separate individuals have linked Phineas 1764-1742, John 1758-1832, Samuel, Jr. 1760-1824, Fulker 1759-1840, and descendants of Jacob Cox 1723/1725-1809, to Phillip Cox 1677-1736 and Dorcas Hull 1685-1753. We believe Phineas' father may have been Samuel Cox 1725/1729-?. This Samuel is most likely a brother to Jacob Cox 1723/1725-1809, and both the sons of John Cox 1703-1767 and Mary (Taylor) 1705-?. John Cox 1703-1767, the son of Phillip Cox and Dorcas Hull, per a family Bible belonging to Dorcas' mother Jerusha Hitchcock. At the time of his death, Phineas estate was worth in excess of $10,000.00, much of which were slaves. His son (James) Frederick Cox was named administrator. Sources ?
