Notables Project
Anthony St Leger is Notable.

Sir Anthony St Leger (the younger) (c.1535– 1613) was an English-born judge in Ireland of the later Tudor and Stuart eras. He held the office of Master of the Rolls in Ireland, as well as Commissioner of plantation in Munster Ireland. He was the nephew, not the son, of the elder Sir Anthony. His parents were Sir Anthony's brother George St Leger and his wife Thomasine Heath.[1] He was born circa 1535, at Leeds, Kent, England. [2]
Marriage

Sir Anthony married three times:

Eleanor Markham (abt.1548-abt.1598), daughter of Richard Markham of Sedgebrook, Lincolnshire. They had one daughter, Joan St Leger.
Mary (Southwell) St Leger (1566-1603), daughter of Francis Southwell of Wyndham Hall, Norfolk. They had two children, Anthony St. Leger Kt. (1599-1661) and Frances (who lived for only four days).
Aphra Wotton - no known children from this union.

Frances (Saint Leger) Landon (1600-) is Unsourced Child
Possible connection with Adam Loftus (Archbishop of Dublin), whose great-grand-daughter Jane Loftus married William Markham.

Death

Anthony died in Cork early in 1613, presumably while on a mission to Ireland. His body was brought back to England and at his own request. He was buried beside his first wife Eleanor in the church of St. Sepulchre-without-Newgate in London. Mary, his second wife, is buried in St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. [3]

553 Biography
Lawrence Washington was a Virginia colonist.
Lawrence Washington is a Qualifying Ancestor of the Jamestowne Society
Notables Project
Lawrence Washington is Notable.

He was born on 01 Sep 1659 at the Mattox Creek Estate, which later would be enjoined with Little Hunting Creek Estate to still later become Mount Vernon.

His parents were Anne (Pope) and John Washington. His namesake grandfather.

John Washington had a brother, also Lawrence Washington, who emigrated to Virginia with him and also died in 1677, as well as an earlier wife and two children, who all died shortly after arriving in Virginia. [1]

At age 18 he inherited Maddox Creek and Little Hunting Creek, a total 4350 acres, from his father through primogeniture.

Being of the gentry of Colonial Virginia, he received private tutoring.

He trained as a lawyer in England - probably at Brasenose College, Oxford, where there were family connections.

As a landowner, his career included county service as one of the justices of the peace in 1680, and in 1684, colonel of the county militia, served two years as the county Sheriff, continued his father's role as the county coroner, and took special interest in guardianships and estates, serving as trustee of the estate of Thomas Pope, the orphan Jan Hay, and Daniel Lisson's daughter born after his death.

As an adult, his interests lay more in law and politics then in plantations. He served for nearly a decade in the House of Burgesses, for Westmoreland County, Virginia from 1684 to 1686 and 1691-1692. The 1688 session was suppressed.

Lawrence Washington married about 1688 in Warner Hall, Gloucester County, Virginia to Mildred Warner.

Capt. Lawrence / Laurence Augustus Washington was a lawyer and planter in colonial Virginia who was educated in England. He was the paternal grandfather of George Washington

He died @38 in March 1698 in Warner Hall, Gloucester County, Virginia and was buried on family land at Bridges Creek. [2]

His wife and three children were left with enough personal property to support them, including 406 pounds sterling and 32,509 pounds of tobacco.

His widow, Mildred, remarried to George Gale and the family returned to England, where she died three years later. Her will left guardianship of the children to Gale. After petitioning, Lawrence's cousin John Washington gained custody and the children were returned to Virginia.

He was the grandfather of the first American President, George Washington.

557 Biography
Name

Elizabeth De Echingham daughter of William De Etchingham and Alice Batisford.[1]

Alternate Surname: Elizabeth De Wychingham see reference #2. [2]

Birth

Different sources give her birth either as about 1394 in Lambeth, Norfolk, or about 1402 in Etchingham, Ticehurst, Sussex. Both are probably too late. Elizabeth's first marriage took place in 1414. If she were 17 at the time, her birthdate would be no later than 1397. Her first husband was born say 1363 which would make him considerably older in any event. Add three years, make her 20, and go with the 1394 birthdate, place unknown.
Parents

Elizabeth's father was of Sir William Echyngham, born c 1370, and d. 20 Mar 1413, son of Sir William de Echingham and Elizabeth and her mother was Alice Batisford, born circa 1372 at Buckholt, Bexhill, Sussex, England. They married after 1 September 1404, and had two daughters, Elizabeth and Joan. [3][4]
First Marriage to Sir Thomas Hoo

Elizabeth Echeringham married (1st) Thomas Hoo, Knt. [5]

She was Thomas Hoo's second wife. He had previously been married before 18 Feb 1394/5 (date of demise) to Eleanor Felton, widow of Robert de Ufford, Knt (living 7 Jan 1389/90, died before 1393. Eleanor was daughter and co-heiress of Thomas de Felton, K. G. She was born about 1361 (aged 20 in 1381) Eleanor died 8 August 1400. [5]

According to Harl. MS, his 2nd wife was Elizabeth, daughter of William de Etchingham, by whom he had issue, a son (another) Thomas Hoo, mentioned in the will of Lord Hoo as his brother, which will also refers to "mylady Lewkenore my mother in lawe" (sic--step mother), the said Elizabeth Wychingham having married, 2ndly, Sir Thomas Lewkenor. [6]

Thomas Hoo's birth date is not found, but he married his 1st wife before 18 Feb 1394/5, and if was 21 in 1394, then his estimated date of birth would be 1373. However, his first wife Eleanor was already a widow when they married, age 20 in 1381, and therefore born in 1361. This would suggest an earlier birth date for Thomas Hoo, say, 1360. However, Thomas Hoo's mother was born in 1343, and so a compromise guess for Thomas' birthdate would be 1363, when his mother would have been 20.

The marriage of Elizabeth Echingham to Thomas Hoo took place after 15 Jan 1414/1415. [5]

They had one son, Thomas, Esq.

Sir Thomas Hoo died 23 August 1420. [5]
Second Marriage to Sir Thomas Lewknor

Elizabeth then married (2nd), after 2 October 1421 and before Michaelmas 1426 (as his 2nd wife) Sir Thomas Lewknor, Knt, of Horsted Keynes, Sussex, Sheriff of Surrey & Sussex, Burgess of Lewes etc.

Elizabeth Echingham and Sir Thomas Lewknor had 8 children -- 5 sons and 3 daughters:[5]Dates of birth are those shown in the children's profiles.

Sir John Lewknor [5]
Walter Lewknor b. 1421, Broadhurst, Horsted Keynes, Sussex,
Thomas Lewknor, b. 1424, Broadhurst, Horsted Keynes, Sussex,
Jane Lewknor, , b. 1425,Broadhurst, Horsted Keynes, Sussex, wife of Thomas Goode
Richard Lewknor, Esq. b. 1426 Broadhurst, Horsted Keynes, Sussex,
Alice Lewknor wife of John Pelham, Knt, b. 1432 Broadhurst, Horsted Keynes, Sussex,
Joan Lewknor, wife of Henry Frowyk
Nicholas Lewknor, child of Thomas Lewknor and Elizabeth Echingham. [5] b. 1435, Kingston Bowsey, Sussex, d. 1473

Currently WikiTree has the following additional children who need to be explored to see where they fit:

Elizabeth Lewknor, b. 1413 Broadhurst, Horsted Keynes, Sussex,
Margaret Lewknor, b. 1432, Kingston, Devon

Elizabeth's birthdate as shown precedes the marriage date for either of the wives, and Margaret's birth location raises questions. Sir Thomas Lewknor, Sheriff of Surrey & Sussex, Burgess of Lewes was born circa 1392 at of Horsted Keynes, Sussex, England; Age 12 in 1404, 19 in 1411.

He married Philippa Dalyngruge, daughter of Sir Walter Dalyngruge and Margaret Chamond, before 1420; Her 2nd marriage. They had 1 son, Sir Roger Lewknor, Sheriff of Surrey & Sussex+ b. c 1421, d. 4 Aug 1478

Sir Thomas Lewknor died in 1452, and Elizabeth survived him. [5]

Sir Thomas Lewknor, Sheriff of Surrey & Sussex, Burgess of Lewes died on 22 June 1452 at of Stoke Doyle, Northamptonshire, England. [7] [8]

Richard Lewkenor (possibly son of Thomas Lewkenor), according to CPVI:564 note (f), was in a lawsuit with Thomas' heirs and was esquire of Wartling, Sussex, which Elizabeth must have had as dowry, and passed onto her son by Thomas.
Death

Elizabeth left a will dated 21 March 1450, proved 23 Feb 1464 (P. C. C. 8 and 59 Godyn).[5]

Different sources give her death either as

1464 in Wartling, Hailsham, Sussex, England[9] or
1472 in Luton Hoo, Bedfordshire, England (why would she have died at her first husband's home?)

? CP [Completge Peerage], in giving Elizabeth the alternate name Wychingham, makes it fairly confusing because Thomas' son also married an Elizabeth Wychingham, whose grandfather was William Wychingham. ECHYNGHAM, Elizabeth (I594784649)

558 Biography
Name

Elizabeth Devereux [1]
Note from the memorial inscription that the name was apparently pronounced "Devroke". [2]

Birth Year Estimation

She was born in 1452.
Parents

Elizabeth Devereux was the daughter of Walter Devereux, K. G., Lord Ferrers of Chartley, by his first wife Anne, daughter and heiress of William Ferrers, Knt, of Chartley, Staffordshire. [1][3]
Ancestry of Elizabeth Devereux

The document below is the Prerogative Court of Canterbury copy of the will, dated 4 October 1518 and proved 10 June 1519, of Thomas Trentham, the great-grandfather of Oxford's second wife, Elizabeth Trentham (d.1612). The testator married Elizabeth Corbet, the daughter of Sir Richard Corbet (b. 1451, d. 6 December 1493) and Elizabeth Devereux (d.1516), the daughter of Walter Devereux (c.1432-1485), 1st Baron Ferrers of Chartley, slain at the Battle of Bosworth on 22 August 1485, and his wife, Anne Ferrers (1438-1469), the daughter and heir of Sir William Ferrers of Chartley, Staffordshire. [2]
1478 Marriage to Sir Richard Corbet

Before 1478 Elizabeth Devereux married Richard Corbet, Knight, of Moreton Corbet and Shawbury, Shropshire. He was the son and heir of Roger Corbet. He was knighted at the Battle of Tewkesbury in May 1471. [1]

In 1469, in Chartley, shortly after her mother's death, and certainly before 1478, Elizabeth Devereux married Sir Richard Corbet.

Sir Walter Devereux, father of Elizabeth Ferrers, was the guardian to Sir Richard Corbet, whom she married. [4]

Elizabeth's mother was the only child of the then Lord Ferrars of Chartley, Sir Walter Devereux whom she married assumed the title in her right, and their daughter Elizabeth Ferrars of Chartley married the young Sir Richard Corbet ; but I find no date given. [4]
1483 Battle of Bosworth Field

1485. On 22 August 1485, at the Battle of Bosworth Field, Elizabeth's father Sir Walter Devereux was killed fighting for Yorkist King Richard III, who was defeated. Opposing him, on the side of Henry Tudor, who became King Henry VII, was Elizabeth's husband Sir Richard Corbet. [5]
1493 Death of Husband and Remarriage

Sir Richard Corbet died in 6 December 1493 in Moreton Corbet. [1]

Elizabeth, his widow, then married Sir Thomas Leighton of Wattlesborough, Sheriff of Shropshire. [4][1]

Sir Richard's wife, Elizabeth Ferrars, outlived him for many years and remarried. Her second husband was Sir Thomas Leighton of Stretton-le-dale.
1516 Death and Burial

In 1516 Elizabeth died and was buried in the church at Burford, Shropshire. [1] where the memorial tablet provides her death year. [2] Augusta Corbet gives her death date, in Moreton Corbet, as 1541, but this conflicts with the inscription, which she describes: "She died in 1541, and was buried in the beautiful Church of Burford, in Shropshire. Her tomb is on the floor in the north-east corner of the chancel. It bears her effigy in metal, and the inscription, which is rather elaborate, records that she was the daughter of Sir Walter Deverok of Weobley, lord Ferrars of Chartley— that she married first Sir Richard Corbet of Morton-Corbet, and secondly Sir Thomas Leighton. [4]

After the death of Sir Richard Corbet (b. 1451, d. 6 December 1493) Elizabeth Devereux (d.1516) married, before 1495, Sir Thomas Leighton (1443-1519) of Wattlesborough in Shropshire, knight of the body to King Henry VII. She was interred in Burford church in Shropshire with this inscription[2]: Here lythe Elyzabethe Devroke, dowg'tur unto Sr Wa'ter Devroke off Webbeley Knygth off ye most noble order off ye Garter & Lorde Ferrers off Charteley, wch Elyzabethe was wyff unto Sr Rychard Corbet off Morton Tyrytte [sic] Knygth, & affter maryed unto Sr Thomas Lyghton Knygth off Stretton in le Dale, wch Elyzabethe dep'ted owte off thys transitorie worlde ye yere off owre Lorde God mccccc & xvj whose sowle Ihu have.

One of Elizabeth's daughters, Anna or Juliana, lies buried in the same Church. She was the wife of Sir Thomas Cornwall, and was mother of the Sir Richard Cornwall who is the central figure on the beautiful Elizabethan triptych in that Church : the triptych forms one of the remarkable and interesting Cornwall monuments found in Burford Church. The central figure commemorates Anna's son, Sir Richard Cornwall, who died in 1568. On his right is his wife and on his left his son Edmund, who died in 1585 and who was known as the strong Baron. On the eastern wing of the lower panel is the record of Anna : " Dame Anne Cornwall lies here, the daughter of Sir Richard Corbet and the wife of Sir Thomas Cornwall." She died in 1548. On the other wing is a small figure of her husband. Sir Thomas. He died in 1537, and was buried, it appears, at Acton, near London. [4]
Issue

Children of Elizabeth Devereux and Richard Corbet

Augusta Corbet notes that "The Pedigree gives Elizabeth and Richard several children, two sons. Sir Robert the eldest. Sheriff for Salop in 1501, who succeeded his father, and a son George, of whom no further mention is made. The daughters were Maria, who married Thomas Lacon, of Willey ; Anna or Juliana, married Sir Thomas Cornewall, of Burford ; Elizabeth, married Thomas Trentham of Shrewsbury. " [4]

Richardson notes that Richard and Elizabeth had two sons (Robert and George) and five daughters (Katherine, Margaret, Mary, Anne and Elizabeth. [1] The National Archives [6] reports that the children of Elizabeth Devereux and Richard Corbet, were enumerated in their son Robert's will which indicates that the testator Robert's parents, Sir Richard Corbet (b. 1451, d. 6 December 1493) and Elizabeth Devereux (d.1516) had two sons (the testator, and another son, George), and five daughters, Mary, Anne, Elizabeth, Katherine, and Margaret.

He died 11 Apr 1513 at Morton Corbet and is buried there. Elizabeth - survived her husband by fifty years (d. 1563) and was called the "old Lady Corbet of Shawbury." Sir Robert's will indicates that he, "the testator was the eldest son and heir of Sir Richard Corbet (b. 1451, d. 6 December 1493) and Elizabeth Devereux (d.1516), the daughter of Walter Devereux (1432-1485), 1st Baron Ferrers of Chartley, slain at the Battle of Bosworth on 22 August 1485.

Katherine (or Catherine) Corbet, who married Thomas Onslow of Rodington;
Margaret Corbet (d.1573), who married Richard Clyve (d. 22 May 1562) of Walford, Shropshire. [6]

In addition, the following children who were not named in their brother's will are sometimes attributed to Elizabeth Devereux and her husband Richard Corbet:

Richard Corbet, b. Abt. 1471 – not mentioned by brother
Roger Corbet. (not named by brother's will)
Dorothy Corbet. (not named by brother's will)

560 Biography
Pauline (Crose) Anderson was a Missourian.

Pauline was born about June 1854. She is the daughter of Robert Crose and Sarah Baker. She died in May of 1923.

Erma Anderson (mother of Jim Carney - grandson) says Pauline Elizabeth was of French speaking descent, but it appears she was of German speaking descent. It is apparent she was separated from her husband George in later years and he was living with another woman, Annie Woresback his purported housekeeper. They (George and Annie) were both murdered in January 1899.

The 1870 Census was taken as Paulina and George were married. They were still living with the Crose family and George was cutting railroad ties for a living, after the civil war having just married his young teen bride.

In 1900 Census, found in Auglaize, Camden, Missouri with Maggie, Charles and Ollie. Widowed, mother of 10 children, head of household.

Research Notes

It has been written that the maiden name for Elizabeth Ingalls was Barrett, also spelled Barrit.[citation needed]

A christening record is said to be the proof for this name, and while there is indeed a christening record for an Elizabeth Barrit, there is no proof that this is the same Elizabeth. The source of this information is said to be the England & Wales Christening Records, 1530-1906.[1] Parents are not listed in this christening record.

She passed away on 22 Apr 1631 at Boston, Lincolnshire, England, wife of Robert A Ingalls (1555-1617).[2] Elizabeth Ingalls BIRTH unknown DEATH unknown BURIAL St. Nicholas' Churchyard, Skirbeck, Boston Borough, Lincolnshire, England MEMORIAL ID 133492949

Notes

More recent research from Anderson in volume VI of "The Great Migration" rejects Daniel and William as sons of Sarah Tilden and George Sutton. [9] And while strongly arguing that Daniel and William should be considered as son's of Sarah Tilden and George Sutton the Genealogical Notes admit that there are no records to connect Daniel and William to Sarah Tilden and George Sutton's family, only that they are the right age and that they became Quakers like many of Sarah's children and grand children [8]

The History of Old Spencer Mill, Dickson Co. Tennessee has some history for Daniel Parker and the Elder John Parker. It states the Parker Creek area was settled in 1804 by Moses Parker and his family, including his Uncle the Elder John Parker. Moses Parker's father was Daniel Parker and Daniel was the first minister at the Turnbull Primitive Baptist Church in 1806. Daniel's son Moses died in 9 Aug 1852. Moses Parker, Find A Grave: Memorial #58940485.[1]

Ancestry contributor doesn't have a complete copy of the Turnbull church records, but some of the Parker's listed are :
Daniel, Moses, Anson?, Samuel, Joseph, Sary, Hannah, Sarah, Ruth, Elisha, John, Elizabeth (she was excommunicated 1812 for leaving her husband).

Levin Dickson (Dixon) of Dickson County mentions his wife Abigail, her brother David, and friend Daniel Parker in his will dated 1814.

Also in Dickson county about 1806 (per Turnbull church records) are Moses Parker and Levin Dickson (Dixon). I saw a post somewhere that stated Levin Dickson married Abigail Parker, daughter of John Parker. Do you know if this is so? Also, the Dickson County Handbook has the following:

Parker Creek - Early deeds refer to this creek as Parker's Fork of Turnbull Creek. John Parker Sr. in 1810 received 640 acres on Parker's Fork ...Early settlers here were Moses Parker... .and Levin Dickson.

Re: Parkers in Upstate GA and TN
Dear otime1,

Yes, I am familiar with your Daniel Parker family. I have to be aware of your Daniel Parker since I seek my own Daniel Parker ancestor who was born about the same time as yours in about the same part of the country as yours.

Mine had children Pleasant (oldest known--born about 1775 we think in NC), Alfred, Edward, Betsy, Nancy, and William (and maybe more) who ended up in southeast KY by the 1820s. We have yet to determine the origin of our Daniel Parker. I have read that your Daniel Parker is the one from Halifax County, VA on the NC line. Is this so? If not, the Halifax County Daniel may be mine.
Please reply, so I will know how to proceed. Besides, our two Daniel Parkers are probably cousins anyway.

David,

Thank you. You are most generous. We suspect that is OUR Daniel Parker who had land with William STILES in Wilkes Co GA. Not sure yet, but it appears the Wilkes County Pleasant Parker (whoever be belongs to) got it as a bounty for his service as a sergeant in the Revolution. We found a Wilkes County court record in 1792 where a Pleasant Parker and a William Stiles were ejected from the 300 acre parcel of land on Harding Creek.
Regardless of where OUR Daniel Parker was before 1796, we are 90% sure it is OUR Daniel Parker who lived on Beaverdam Creek in what was then Pendleton District, SC which is now Anderson County, SC--your home. The court records for 1796 to 1798 stated he was a laborer who came there from Kershaw County, SC, but they could have been mistaken. The court record was to show the trials of this same Daniel Parker for horse theft and just before he could be convicted based largely on the testimony of Edith Parker his wife, he broke jail in April 1798 and disappeared into probably TN leaving wife and kids. We believe he is the same Daniel Parker who showed up in Jefferson County, southeast IN about 1816 and lived in the village of Milton there until he died in 1848. Meanwhile, many of his children between 1806 and the 1820 settled in southeast KY in what became Laurel County. More later. Bruce

Subject: [SC-OPD] Francis & Daniel Parker During 1790s in Pend. Dist.

I read in court records about the misdeeds of Francis and Daniel PARKER in old Pendleton District, SC during the 1790s, and I think one or both of them are the Parkers I have been seeking.
Francis Parker was convicted of creating a riot and assault and battery in Pickensville during 1795 but he fled before sentencing to parts unknown.
During August 1796 Daniel Parker, a laborer who lived on Beaverdam Creek, in 1796 stole a neighbor's horse and sold the animal near his previous home near the PeeDee River in east SC. He was also convicted partly due to his wife's testimony against him, but broke jail in April 1798 for parts unknown.
I think these two are the same men of those names shown living beside other in the 1790 census of St. John's Parish not far from Georgetown in east SC.

573 Biography
U.S. Southern Colonies Project
Jane (Hatcher) Gower was a Virginia colonist.

Jane was born about 1640 in Henrico County, Virginia. In a deposition given on 1 Dec 1688 in the case of Fra. Carter vs. John Womack, Jane Gower stated she was aged about 48 years.[1][2] She is the purported / provisional daughter of William Hatcher, but this is unproven and the Disputed Origins covers tertiary sources that require firsthand vetting. No primary source documentation has been found to prove her last name at birth was Hatcher.
Marriages & Children

Jane was married three times[2] and outlived all three husbands and all of her children except Mary (Baugh) Cox. She had five known children, all born 1656 or after. In an Orphan's Court proceeding in Henrico County on 2 Aug 1677, four of her children are listed as minors under the Guardianship of her third husband Abell Gower. Perhaps some have discounted a few of the additional children by the second and third husbands because they may not have been minors in 1677: among children below-listed with a footnote, they are considered provisionally proven. (Please see also the below Timeline.)

Jane married William Branch as his second wife about 1656 in Henrico County, Virginia. William was a widower with children from previous marriage. No marriage record has been located. William and Jane had two known children:

William Branch Jr, born (b.) circa (c.) 1657, died (d.) 1687 (before Jan 1688) without issue, married (m.) Jane Ward
John Branch, b. circa 1658/9, d. between Jan & Apr 1688, m. Martha (Grigg/Unknown). Refer to Dorman (2007, p. 369.)[3]

Janes husband William Branch died circa 1660. Jane next married William Baugh (d. 1676) about 1661 in Henrico County, Virginia. William Baugh was a widower and had children from a previous marriage. William and Jane had only two known children:

John Baugh, b. c. 1661 in Henrico County[4][3]
Mary Baugh, b. c. 1662 in Henrico County, d. Abt. 1710, m. John Cox: See Dorman (2007), p. 367 (Footnote 13), & 729.[3]
Katherine Baugh, b. 1663 in Henrico County
Priscilla Baugh, b. c. 1664 in Henrico County, d. 1706 on Farrar's Island, Henrico County, m. William Farrar III abt. 1680.
James Baugh, b. 1665 in Henrico County
Thomas Baugh, b. 1667 in Henrico County
William Baugh III[4], b. c. 1668 Henrico County, d. 1676 Henrico County.

After the death of William Baugh about 1666, Jane married Abell Gower before Aug 1677 in Henrico County, Virginia. Abell Gower died before June 1689, date will probated. They had one known child:

Tabitha Gower, b c 1678, m Robert Grigg in Oct 1700,[5] died about 1702 without issue
Richard Gower (previously attached as a child, but no evidence supports this relationship)

He is not included as a minor in 1677 when Jane's children are listed under the Guardianship of Jane's third husband Abell Gower. William (III) is assumed to be son of William, Jr., and his first unknown wife. He was born before his father married Jane about 1661, probably as early as 1656. Witnessed by Thomas (X) Sadler and William Blackman,[1]

1 Oct 1696 - John Cocke Jr, son of Richard Cocke Sr, of County & Parish of Henrico, has taken to wife Obedience Branch, eldest daughter of my son John Branch, late of Kingsland in same county, plantar, dec'd, Now I, Jane Gower of Kingsland in same county and parish, widow, for love and affection, give to said John Cocke and Obedience his wife, all that plantation given me by my father in law Christopher Branch, late of Kingsland, dec'd, being land where my son John dwelt, now in tenure of Robert Grigg, on south side of James River, 100 acres, bounded by Thomas Branch and Mr. Abell Gower orphan."[14][15]

Note: Robert Grigg married Tabitha Gower, daughter of Jane and Abel Gower.
Research Notes

The nativity of Jane Hatcher is often in question. The following is worth noting: 1. Dorman, John Frederick FASG. Adventurers of Purse and Person, Vol 1, 4th ed, Footnote 16. 2004, p. 267.

"Neil D. Thompson, The Family of Bartholomew Stovall, (Fort Worth, Tex., 1993) p. 204 identifies her as probably a daughter of William Hatcher. In her will she left a damask gown, and petticoat to sister Hatcher, presumably the wife of one of William Hatcher's sons. [If Jane was not herself a Hatcher, then we don't know her siblings. "Sister Hatcher" could have been Jane's sister who married a Hatcher. This reference is the only documentation used to declare Jane was a Hatcher, and at best presents inconclusive evidence. Given that the will-writing practices of the time were to mention biological sisters and daughters by their current married name the reference to "sister Hatcher" would imply a woman who was, in 1710, named Hatcher, which would more likely be a wife of a Hatcher man.

2. "From Metcalfe's Visitation of Worcestershire, 1683, p. 10: (vol 18 page 202, VA Mag of History and Biography)

"Pedigree of Baught of Twining.

Richard Baugh married Ann daughter of John Gower of Woodhall in Kempsey, Co., Worcestershire. Thomas Baugh married Dorothy daughter of John Gower of Wrocs. This pedigree also states that another Thomas Baugh "was absent in Virginia in 1624, living in College land in 1625" (These Baugh-Gower marriages are particularly interesting in light of Mrs. Jane Branch-Baugh's marriage to Abell Gower).

"Priscilla Baugh's mother, Jane Hatcher (?)3, married first William Branch4, William Baugh, Abel Gower.

Footnotes of above (page 146, The Farrar's Island Family and It's English Ancestry, Alvanh Holmes, 1972.

3. Authors of Burton's Chronicles thought she was a Burton. From Burton Chronicles of Colonial Virginia, Page 31, comes the following paragraph:

"Though we have no satisfactory evidence to sustain the theory it is believed that Thomas (of Cobbs) Burton and John (of Longfield) Burton had two sisters in Henrico, Mrs. Edward Hatcher, senior, and Mrs. Jane Branch-Baugh-Gower, who was first the wife of a son of Christopher Branch (already mentioned as deeding 60 acres to James Place), next the wife of William Baugh, junior, (the Baugh plantation adjoined Cobbs) and third of Abel Gower. This much widowed lady had children by each marriage. She died in 1710 and in her will mentioned her "sister Hatcher." The possibility that she was a Burton was first suggested by Mr. Landon C. Bell in an article in a recent number of Tyler's Quarterly (this text was published in 1933). Reference to her will be made later in these pages."

4. Jester P 10 and Cabell, both state she married William Branch, an Orphan's court record, Aug 1678, of division of the cattle of William Branch and William Baugh, among the orphans by Abel Gower, also indicates this marriage.

Regarding Tabitha Gower, FindAGrave describes:

Marriage license granted to Robert Grigg on 20 Oct 1700 to marry Tabitha, orphan of Abel Gower, but does not cite a specific source.

Also from FindAGrave, this a conveyance by Jane to her granddaughter, Obedience Branch:

An 01 Oct 1696 Henrico County Gift Deed states: "John Cocke Jr, son of Richard Cocke Sr, of County & Parish of Henrico, has taken to wife Obedience Branch, eldest daughter of my son John Branch, late of Kingsland in same county, plantar, dec'd, Now I, Jane Gower of Kingsland in same county and parish, widow, for love and affection, give to said John Cocke and Obedience his wife, all that plantation given me by my father in law Christopher Branch, late of Kingsland, dec'd, being land where my son John dwelt, now in tenure of Robert Grigg, on south side of James River, 100 acres, bounded by Thomas Branch and Mr. Abell Gower orphan."

Also from FindAGrave, this is believed to be one and the same location as the first colonial home of William Baugh Sr:

A survey for a patent dated 20 Oct 1665 for 1380 acres for Christopher Branch, Sr. at Kingsland and Proctors Creek states that William Baugh, Sr. resided on this land prior to 1668, near a "remarkable great stone lying above William Baugh's house line" (Patent Bk. "5", p590).

Disputed Origins

See Research Notes for some additional info. Also see note by Dan Ward on 21 Aug 2022 for commentary on the topic.

Some claim her parents most likely were Robert Griegg (abt.1620-aft.1703) of Henrico, Virginia and Mary Osborne, the former whose 4 Feb 1703 will names Jane Gower as an heir and executrix.[16][17] However, he does not call her a daughter even though he names godchildren.
Some have attributed her maiden name to be Burton, but little evidence for this exists.
Her father may be William Hatcher.[3][18][19]

Charles Carter was a Virginia colonist.

Col. Charles Carter of Cleve
Origin

Charles was born about 1707 at Corotoman Plantation, Lancaster County, Virginia, the home of his father, to Robert "King" Carter, a land baron and member of the governor's Council, and Elizabeth (Landon) Carter.[1] It was the second marriage of both his parents.[1]

Birth date 1707 is a guess, based on the date of his first marriage.
Younger Years

Charles Carter was educated in England and returned to Virginia in 1724, after which he moved to one of his father's estates in Middlesex County. He later purchased a King George County plantation known as Cleve. (He was often referred to as Charles Carter of Cleve to distinguish him from relatives of the same name.)
Marriages

Charles married three times.

He married in 1728, as his 1st, to Mary Walker.[2]

He married December 25, 1741 in Westover Parish, Charles City Co, as his 2nd, to Anne Byrd.[2]

He married in 1763, as his 3rd, to Lucy Taliaferro.[2]

Lambeth Dodson Sr. was a Virginia colonist.

Lambert Dodson was born c. 1689, a son of Charles Dodson and Ann Unknown.[1] Lambert is assumed to have married twice. Only his first wife is known, and because he appears to have had later children, the second marriage is assumed.[2]

Lambert married, during the early 1720's, to Sarah Harris, daughter of Philip Harris.[2]. Sarah was born before 1703 in Virginia, based on Sarah being at least 21 years old when her first child was born in 1724. Sarah died on 21 February 1736 in North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia.[3]

Lambert married, after 1736, as his 2nd, to an unknown wife.[2]

The first three children's births were recorded at North Farnham Parish.[4]. The next four probable children are assumed from other records.[2] Children of Lambert and Sarah:

Mary Dodson, b North Farnham Parish 3 Apr 1724
Isaac Dodson, b North Farnham Parish 11 Sep 1730
Nanny Dodson, b North Farnham Parish 20 Jul 1734
John Dodson
Charles Dodson
Lambeth Dodson, Jr.,
Daniel Dodson

Note: Probable children other than Mary, Isaac, and Nancy were John, Charles, Lambeth Jr., and Daniel.

Lambeth's date and place of death are unknown.[2]
Research Notes

Lambeth seems to have left Richmond before 1739 and his whereabouts are unknown for several years. In Nov 1747 there is a plat for 190 acres on Falling Creek in the old Halifax County Virginia Plat Book 1, and another on Sandy Creek in February of 1755. These locations are probably in present Henry and Patrick Counties. Lambeth appears on a tax roll in Halifax in 1753. In 1765, Lambeth patented 400 acres on the Mayo River in Pittsylvania County but transferred this to George Gibson a year later, Gibson possibly a son-in-law? He also patented land in Guilford County North Carolina in 1779, some of which was sold by Lambeth Dodson of Henry County Virginia to Zachariah King in 1784; another part of this land was sold by Dodson heirs in 1814, Lambeth Jr. may have had possession of part.[2]

LAMBERT or LAMBETH - - Born 1689, left Richmond after 1739, acquired land in Halifax County, Virginia, 1747, 1755 and on the Mayo River in 1765, died after 1780 in N. Carolina, married Sarah Harris .

1751 Granville County North Carolina - Tax list on Dan River Lamberd Dodson

Lambert (Lambeth) Dodson. Given Name: Lambert (Lambeth). Surname: Dodson. Suffix: Sr. A Given name was found in addition to a first name in the NAME tag.

According to Early Colonial Settlers of Southern Maryland and Virginia's Northern Neck Counties Lambert was born about 1698. His parents were Charles Dodson and Mary Elmore. 578 Biography
U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Martha (Clay) Blankenship Stanley was a Virginia colonist.

Martha is estimated to have been born about 1670, probably in Henrico County, Virginia. (Birth year estimated based on age 20 at marriage in 1690.)

"On 7 August 1727 Martha Stanley of Henrico Parish and county made a deed of gift of 100 acres on the south side of James River at the head of Proctors Creek to her son John Blankenship. It was part of the land granted to her as Martha Blankenship and was the land where John Blankenship was living. The land was almost surely a portion of the tract which Edward Stanley had devised to him in common with his brothers Ralph and James.[1] [2]

It was during the summer of 1725 that Martha Blankenship, a widow of eleven years, decided to marry again. She married Edward Stanley, a widower of Henrico County; he was born circa 1650. His former wife was Hannah (Wilson) Clay, widow of Charles Clay.

Edward Stanley deposed that was aged 35 on 14 May 1685 in Henrico County. He had married Hannah (Wilson) Clay between 1 October 1687 and 10 April 1696. Edward Stanley lived on the north side of Swift Creek on a 235 acre plantation next to Robert Hudson which he had purchased from Thomas Powland, Sr. for £3 on 24 March 1703/4. "According to the 1704 quit rent roll of Henrico County, he owned 300 acres. He had acquired an additional 135 acres from Robert Hudson for £5 on the north side of Swift Creek, on 30 October 1709. In all probability the property adjoined his own land.

On 5 October 1725 the Henrico County court held at Varina ordered Edward Stanley, who intermarried with Martha the relict of Ralph Blankenship, to be summoned to appear at the next court and bring the orphans of Ralph Blankenship, deceased.[3]

Accordingly, some of the children of Ralph were still under age in 1725. By this union Martha probably improved her condition measurably. Unfortunately, Edward Stanley did not live much longer. He made his will in Henrico County on 21 May 1726 leaving his daughter Hannah Thweatt one shilling, his wife Martha 1/3 of his land for life, his granddaughter Frances Thweatt the plantation whereon he lived and the plantation where Richard Dickason lately dwelt, various items granddaughters Mary and Hannah Thweatt, and his plantations on Coldwater Run totaling 230 acres to Ralph, John, and James Blankenship. He named his wife Martha Stanley executrix.
Marriages & Children

Martha Unknown married Ralph Blankenship about 1690 in Henrico County, Virginia.

William Blankenship, born about 1691 in Henrico County, Virginia; died April 1745 in Henrico County, Virginia
Richard Blankenship, born about 1693 in Henrico County, Virginia; died after 1768 in Goochland County, Virginia
Ralph Blankenship, Jr, born about 1695 in Henrico County, Virginia; died November 1754 in Chesterfield County, Virginia
John Blankenship, born about 1697 in Chesterfield County, Virginia; died April 9, 1754 in Chesterfield County, Virginia
James Blankenship, born about 1699 in Henrico County, Virginia; died May 23, 1749 in Chesterfield County, Virginia
Ann Blankenship

Martha married second Edward Stanley about 1725 in Henrico County, Virginia. They had no children.
Research Notes

Disputed parents:

1." We don't know when Martha (wife of Ralph Blankenship the immigrant) was born as there has never been a birth record found. We also don't know her parents. It is possible she was born about 1660 and that she was the daughter of Charles Clay (1636-1686) and Hannah Wilson (1642-1706) but it cannot yet be proven. This information is based on the fact that two of the Clay brothers who also were children of Charles and Hannah appeared on the death inventory and will of Ralph Blankenship and Martha's second husband Edward Stanley. This would have been properly done to protect Martha's dowry if her brothers had been witnesses to Martha's husband's wills or death inventory. It's only circumstantial evidence, but its certainly possible. If this was the case then Edward Stanly would have married Hannah Wilson (the mother) after Charles Clay died in 1686. She married Edward Stanley in 1690 and died 16 years later in 1706. Edward Stanley then remained a widower until 1716 when he married Martha, the former wife of Ralph Blankenship. Just conjecture based on circumstantial evidence. This Clay family lived right next to Ralph Blankenship just north of Swift Creek." Don

2. The two Clay brothers who "appeard on the death inventory and will of Ralph Blankenship and Martha's second husband Edward Stanley..." were probably there because Martha, widow of Ralph Blankenship, was marrying their step-father Edward Stanley, second husband of their deceased mother Hannah (Wilson) Clay. This is not evidence Martha was their sister. (Strutton-11 18:54, 13 February 2022 (UTC))

Death Cert of son Otto J. Hasse provides name of father and mother: William Hasse and Elizabeth Swansberger. [1]

Wm's son Carl Hasse married Rosa Bethke on 27 December 1862 in Flatow, Westpreußen, Deutschland (Germany).[2]

Marriage Certificate of son - Carl and wife Rose Bethke married and then immigrated to US. Then living in Sepolno Krajenskie, West Prussia, now Poland.

Historical Background

The Province of West Prussia (German: Provinz Westpreußen) was a province of Prussia from 1773 to 1829 and 1878 to 1922. West Prussia was established as a province of the Kingdom of Prussia in 1773, formed from Royal Prussia of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

West Prussia was dissolved in 1829 and merged with East Prussia to form the Province of Prussia, but was re-established in 1878 when the merger was reversed and became part of the German Empire.

From 1918, West Prussia was a province of the Free State of Prussia within Weimar Germany, already losing most of its territory to the Second Polish Republic.

West Prussia was dissolved in 1922, and its remaining western territory was merged with Posen to form Posen-West Prussia.

After WWII, all the areas of West Prussia were restored to Poland.

585 Biography
William Stark is German speaking Polish.

Friedrich was born in 1826 as his tombstone reads. There was another Friedrich Wilhelm HEINRICH Stärk born in Berlin, no where near Poland and born 20 Jan 1825. As our Friedrich Stark death certificate and headstone both state birth is 10 January 1826, that is the date used and is also supported by immigration document (born 1827 estimate varies by month of recording). The family Stark bible confirms 10 January 1826 in addition to official documentation.

There are many other Fredrich Starks in Germany in census's, birth records, similar age, but USE CAUTION and remember this Stark line comes from the Lauenburg area of Poland - often confused with Lauenburg in Germany. Additionally marriage and death documents of the children confirm the mother as Martha Klein or Cline not the name of the other Friedrich Stark.

The city of Lauenburg has been converted now back to it's Polish name of Lebork (Polish pronunciation: ['l?mb?rk] ; Kashubian: Lãbòrg; German: Lauenburg in Pommern) a town on the Leba and Okalica rivers in the Gdansk Pomerania region in northern Poland. It is the capital of Lebork County in Pomeranian Voivodeship. Its population is 37,000. More info see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%C4%99bork for map and history.

William married Juliana Klein in about 1865 in Prussia, with details of Juliana in the Stark Bible, picture attached, confirming birth date matches baptism record. Christening records confirm parents.

Juliana and Wilhelm had 4 well documented children by marriage, death and bible supporting references;

Martha Caroline Stark 1867-1940
Rudolph Julius William Stark 1869-1957
Clara Hermine Auguste Stark 1873-1955
Helena "Lena" Adelina Stark 1877-1944

Wilhelm (age 58) arrived in the U.S. on 17 April 1885.[1] His wife Julian died in 1883 (confirmed since widower listed in other docs) prior to boarding ship Baltimore 1885, when passenger manifest shows (Friedrich) William, Martha, Rudolph, Clara, Helena arriving in Baltimore, before proceeding onto Michigan where Polish/German speaking communities were located.

William passed away in 1903. Friedrich William was mentioned on a memorial at Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Tawas City, Iosco County, Michigan, United States with a death date of 7 March 1903.[2]

The death certificate of Wilhelm, also verifies he is the son of John (Johann) Stark, died (age 77) on 7 March 1903 in Tawas Township, Iosco, Michigan, United States.[3]

Friedrich William's wife is confirmed as Juliana Klein (Cline) from the daughters death certificate Martha Caroline Bell died on 31 March 1940 in Churchill Township, Ogemaw, Michigan, United States, lists her mothers last name as Cline.[4] Other children marriage and death documents confirm Juliana Klein as their mother.

586 Biography IN CONTENTION!!!

David (OR JOHN or two persons) was born in 1643. He was the son of Lawrence Oliphant and Lilias Oliphant. He passed away on 2 November 1707 and was buried in Edinburgh, City of Edinburgh, Scotland.[1]

David was recorded in a deed locating him in Edinburgh residence.[2]

David is reported to have married Janet Barton but I cannot confirm this and have strong doubts as to the varacity of this claim, citing her age, location, etc.
Research

David did not accompany his son William and Duncan Oliphant to the Colonies. No record of him attending can be found despite assertions by others - again with Janet Barton. He stayed and died in Scotland is my belief, but if he did go to the Colonies he was serving in the military and returned to Scotland.

[3] The first Oliphant I have a record of who came to the Colonies was William Oliphant who was a passenger on the "Henry & Francis" in 1685. It is generally believed that he was Duncan's brother. The "Henry & Francis" was a prison ship from Scotland. Our Colonial ancestor, Duncan Oliphant who was born 1682 in Perthshire, Scotland, the son of David Oliphant (born 1643).

Duncan came to New York around 1695 and married in 1705 Mary Garrison; who was born 1686 in Scotland, the daughter of Lambert Garrison. They worshiped at the Old Dutch Church on Staten Island and the church records show that some of their children were baptized at this church. In the Census of Staten Island, New York, 1706, Stilwell's Vol. I list, Duncan Oliphant named as age 24 years. He was constable for the North Precinct, Richmond County, Staten Island, New York in 1709.

Duncan moved his family in 1721-24 to East Amwell, New Jersey, where he had purchased a large tract of land in Hopewell Township, Burlington County, New Jersey (now Amwell Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey) where he was chosen Freeholder of Amwell Township. Until 1725 the Anglicans had heard services in their own houses. Then on January 22, 1725 William Lummox granted eleven acres of land to John Knowles and Duncan Oliphant in trust for an Anglican Church. Organized under Crown Charter as St. Andrew's the first church on this site was built. Today nothing remains of the original St. Andrew's but a fragment of the graveyard which may be seen next to the Old Yorke Inn in the village of Ringoes. It is said that Duncan Oliphant was buried in this graveyard.

Birth

Moses Parker was reputedly born 26 AUG 1744 often claimed as a son of the Nathaniel Parker who married Ann Clayton had been used to estimate her birth year to abt. 1726, but that Moses Parker belongs to Parker yDNA FamilyGroup #07, while her sons Daniel Parker and the Elder John Parker belong to Parker yDNA FamilyGroup #05. Two biologically distinct and unrelated Parker yDNA lines. Daniel Parker was born the 15 Mar. 1750. Assuming Ann was 18 years old when she married Nathanial, then she was born about 1731.

589 Birth

Elizabeth (Martiau) Reade, wife of George, left her daughter, Mildred Warner, a ring in her will. The date of Mildred's birth is unknown, but probably about 1643.

The date 2 Oct 1643 is supported by several online indexes (ie. Family Data Collection, The Millennium File), but without evidence. Many of these list Mildred's birth at Warner Hall in Gloucester County, Virginia, but Warner Hall was the home of her husband, Augustine Warner. Elizabeth and George Reade lived in Williamsburg, Virginia, at the time of Mildred's birth.

Marriage

She married, about 1671, to Augustine Warner of Warner Hall.

Mildred and Augustine first lived in the same vicinity, Chesake, Gloucester County, Virginia, on the Pianketunk River. Here their daughter Elizabeth was born in 1672.[1]After the death of Augustine's father, also Augustine, they inherited the Plantation and Warner Hall. Here they raised six known children. After the death of her husband, Mildred continued as mistress of Warner Hall during here widowhood of thirteen years.

A large quantity of arms and ammunition, had been left at Warner Hall, probably from the period of Bacon's Rebellion. In 1684, the Virginia Burgesses asked the governor to appropriate these arms for public use. Col. Bacon (the rebel's uncle) and Maj. Lawrence Smith also had stockpiles in their possessions.

Alternative Marriage date of 1665 at Warner Hall, Virginia

Death and Legacy

Mildred did leave a will, dated 4 Jan 1694.

Mildred's husband has a marked tomb in the family cemetery at Warner Hall, and Mildred's body undoubtedly rests there also. Time has left no stone to give us her birth and death dates. A new stone has been carved and placed on the likely grave of Mildred. While Find-A-Grave reports a date of death of 20 October 1686, there are no dates on this stone indicating that there are no accepted vital dates for Mildred.

Mildred was the 8-Great grandmother of Queens Elisabeth II through her daughter Mary (married John Smith) to the Bowes-Lyons family. She is also the great grandmother of President George Washington as her daughter Millicent married Lawrence Washington.[5]
