Notes - Bayeux, town in northern France, in Calvados Department, on the Aure River, near the English Channel. Bayeux is a farm-trade and manufacturing center; products include processed food, lace, and pottery. of note here are a Gothic cathedral (with Romanesque sections) and a museum housing the famous Bayeux tapestry, a large embroidery depicting the Norman conquest of England in 1066.
Originally a Gallic capital, Bayeux later became an important Roman center, called first Augustodurum and later Civitas Baiocassium. The town was made an episcopal see in the 4th century.
