Notes - Nicholas Haile was born about 1630 in England, either Kent or Herfordshire. [1] He was transported to Virginia before 1645. His name as a "transportee" was used to acquire grants of land in early Virginia by at least three different persons. He had sufficient funds to purchase in 1652 an interest in a large tract of land which he patented in subsequent years. Nicholas also transported to Virginia at his own expense as many as a dozen bonded servants which he used to obtain land patents. [2]
Nicholas' wife was claimed to be Mary Travers. Mary Hale was listed in the debts for the estate of Rawleigh Travers.
Nicholas died in Virginia before November 8, 1671 when records show Mary Haile as executrix for the estate of Nicholas Haile, her husband, deceased. He died intestate so only the administration of his estate is available.According to Hale/Haile/Heal Genealogy Biographical Info On Nicholas Hale known as the 1st born 1628 in England he and his wife had only 3 children. BUT maybe there were others?

This surname is of English origin, belonging to the group of landscape names. It first identified the dweller in a nook or corner of a valley. The word is derived from "halgh", a term applied to low, level lands washed by a river or sea. Some sources believe that the hale surname may also have come from a hall, or someone who lived near a great hall. Some prominent Hales include Nathaniel Hale and many other early colonists. The first Hales in America spelled the name Heale and it was pronounced Hale, the spelling changed over around 1775.
Nicolas Heale was the founder of this family in America. Presumably a native of England, he appears in York County, Virginia in 1654 and may have been there a few years earlier. Nicholas Heale was granted land in Lancaster County on June 1, 1657 and again on May 18, 1666 and made his home there. The name of his wife and the date of his death are not known.
He came to Elizabeth City Co in 1645. He purchased 100 acres in York Co VA in 1648, then moved to Lancaster Co. VA in 1654, purchasing around 1500 acres, including 500 acres on Corrotoman Run in 1657.
