    • Edward le Despenser, 1st Lord (Baron) le Despenser, so created by writ of summons to Parliament 15 Dec 1357; KG (1361); fought at Battle of Poitiers 1356, Constable of English Army in an unsuccessful invasion of France 1373-74. [Burke's Peerage]

      Sir Edward Despenser, KG, b. Essendine 24 Mar 1335/6, d. Llanbethian 11 Nov 1375; m. bef. Dec 1364 Elizabeth de Burghersh (13-9), d. 26 July 1409. [Magna Charta Sureties]

      d was present at the Battle of Poitiers. In recognition of his conduct in the French wars, he was summoned to Parliament as a baron in 1357. At the same time, he also became a Knight of the Garter.

      He was a friend and patron of Jean Froissart[1] and the eldest brother of Henry le Despenser, Bishop of Norwich.

      There is a statue of him on the top of the Holy Trinity Chantry Chapel in Tewkesbury Abbey, renowned as the "KNEELING KNIGHT".

      Edward married Elizabeth Burghersh, daughter of Bartholomew Burghersh, 2nd Baron Burghersh.
      They had the following children:
