Undated memorandum of John S. Lawrence
"he was the second son and the third child of Uriah and Mar
y (Clark)Lawrence. He was born at North East, Duchess, New York, on 1 Jan 1748.(Uriah Lawrence's family bible, in the possession of A. E. Reed,Mansfield, Connecticut)
"David Lawrence served in the militia forces during the AmericanRevolution and signed the "General Association" in June 1775. He marriedAbigail Birch on 2 Jan 1777.
"He moved to Stillwater, Saratoga, New York, and bought a farm of 160acres in extent from Samuel Bryan for 500 pounds on 21 Sep 1790 (SaratogaCounty records Liber G., page 473). It is situated about a mile south ofthe headquarters of General Gates at the battle of Saratoga and commandsan extended and beautiful view over the Hudson Valley. He sold it to hisson, David R. Lawrence, 1 April 1815 (R. E. Records Liber M., page 473)for $3,500 but his wife did not sign the deed. He is described in thedeed from Bryan as of Little Nine Partners, Duchess, New York (North EastPrecinct was formerly a part of the Little Nine Partners patent). DavidLawrence died 13 May 1834 and is buried in the Old Baptist Church, orHicks Burying Ground, four and a half miles from Bemis Heights and threeand a half miles from his residence. The inscription on the tombstoneis, 'Sacred to the memory of David Lawrence who departed this life may13th, 1834, in the 87th year of his age.' Memoranda left by hisgrandson, John K, Porter.)
"He deeded to his brother, Martin Lawrence, thirty acres of land in NorthEast, 24 Dec 1790 (Real estate records of Duchess County, New York, Liber17, page 554.) house at Stillwater was in excellent preservation in 1907, as wasDavid Lawrence's tombstone."
