He married Sarah Horton on October 7, 1817 in Rutherford County, North Carolina, and they had at least eight children. He was drafted into the military during the War of 1812 in March 1814 in Rutherford County, NC for six months. He served as a private in the 7th Regiment (Pearson's) NC Militia. He received two land grants in Rutherford County, one on Hinton's Creek and one on Sandy Run Creek. He has eight siblings.
