Notes - Elisabeth "Betsy" Stebbins Sackett was the second school teacher in Gouveneur, the first, left after only one week. The schoolhouse was built of logs and measured 12 by 16 feet from the outer edges of the walls. It was built in the autumn of 1809, with twelve pupils between the ages of 3 and 15 attending.
