EARLY WHALER
MR. E. TURNER'S DEATH
———
AN OLD AUCKLANDER
LIFE OF ADVENTURE
The death of one of the oldest-born Aucklanders, Mr. Edwin Benjamin Evans Turner, occurred yesterday at his son's residence at Tranmere Road, Sandringham. Mr Turner was the only surviving child of the late Mr. Benjamin Turner, who was informally elected as governor of the Bay of Islands before the establishment of official British rule.
Benjamin Turner was making his second trip to New Zealand in 1820 when his whaler was wrecked in the vicinity of the Bay of Islands and all except himself and one other crew were killed and eaten by the Maoris. As the shipwrecked crew were being marched into the pa a woman related to Hongi Ika selected Mr. Turner as a slave. He became Tapu and was allowed to have a life of one of his companions spared. Later he married the Maori, but two years after her death in 1930 he married the daughter of one of the first white settlers in the Bay of Islands. The family later came to Auckland and Mr. Edwin Turner, the third son, was born in a cottage on the hill between Victoria and Durham Streets. He remembered well the hanging of the Maori, Maketu on Barrack Hill, now Albert Park for the murder of Mrs. Roberton and other on Motu-arobbia in the Bay of Islands, and the gathering of settlers who had come by farmcart and buggy from as far away as Otahuh and Waiuku.
At the age of 14 Edwin B.E. Turner ran away to sea and reached London, where he was persuaded by Dr. Brown of the firm Logan Campbell and Brown to return home. He then joined Colonel Nixon's troops and was engage in carrying mail through dangerous country to Pokeno. Later he built the Hamilton Hotel for his brother and took charge of the business. Mr. Turner (Edwin B.E. Turner) served in Otago stations and later farmed at Helensville, where, as the result of a gun accident, he lost his right hand. He also worked in the crews of the old paddle-steamers, Nevada, Nebraska and Dakotah in the mail service to San Francisco. On leaving the sea Edwin managed cattle stations in Fiji and finally returned to Auckland in the 'nineties to take up the business of contracting. His wife died 21 years ago (1914) and four years later he retired and took up residence with one of his sons. One of Edwin's brothers was the late Hon. J. B. Turner, a well-known Fiji trader who presented to the Auckland War Memorial Museum one of the finest Polynesian collections in the world.
The funeral will take place at Waikumete Cemetery this afternoon.
