"The first mills erected in town were situated on Hop Brook, near the
present site of Tuller's Mills, and were built in 1679. These consisted
of a grist and saw mill, and were put up by Thomas Barber, John Moses,
John Terry, and ephraim Howard, who contracted with the town to keep the
mills in good repair, to grind grain for the tolls allowed by law, to
sell to the inhabitants boards at four and six pence per hundred, and not
to transport oak to any other town. In consideration of which, the town
allowed them the mill privileges, the right to take timber on the common
lands, -- a lot of good timber lands, and twenty pounds payable in town
rates." This was near the "present" (1845) site of Tuller's Mills. N.B.
