• Notes

  Elizabeth Coffey died between 1811 and 1816. There is no known source informaton to the date she died or the exact location she was buried. James Coffey died in Wilkes County, North Carolina in 1786 where his will is recorded in Book 1, page 202 (Wills of Wilkes County, North Carolina). His will was probated in the October Court, and and mentioned his wife Elizabeth Coffey and his children [Elizabeth] Betty Whiteside, John, James Jr., Reuben, Ambrose, Eli, Rice, Martha Durham, Joel, Lewis, and the heirs of his deceased son Archelaus. Sons of John and Reuben are named as executors and the witnesses are William Lenoir, Peter Holt, and Benjamin Coffey. Just a note to eliminate confusion. James Coffey had a sister Elizabeth Graves Coffey born in 1748 (that is the most commonly published birthdate) or 1749, who md Thomas Field. James also had a daughter named after his wife and his sister, Elizabeth Coffey born in 1751 who married Robert Whitside. These two Elizabeths are not the same people and should, therefore, not be confused and merged. It seems some have been confused and I think the confusion was understandable with the wrong birthdate for James Coffey's daughter Elizabeth. It is well established that Robert Whiteside md Elizabeth Coffey, daughter of James Coffey and Elizabeth Cleveland, in much that is written about this family. Some early historians do confuse the two Elizabeth's however. Even the DAR records show someone submitted the wrong birthdate of James Coffey's daughter Elizabeth with that of her aunt. Hopefully, Family Search patrons will not confuse them again and not delete James Coffey's daughter and Robert Whiteside's wife.
