    • BIRTH:ONE RECORD 20-AUG,ANOTHER 28-AUG. 13-FEB-91 FROM WESLEY SULLIVAN:JOHN TYLER WAS ACTIVE IN THE CIVIL WAR. HE WAS IN A FEDERAL PRISON AT ROCK ISLAND,ILLINOIS AND MAMMY (MARY) CARNEY GOT SOME GOLD AND BOUGHT HIM OUT OF THE PRISON. HE LOST A LEG DURING THE WAR. JOHN'S WAR RECORDS ARE LISTED IN THE ARCHIVES IN NASHVILLE, NOT MUCH, BUT SOME. I HAVE A PAIR OF PICTURES IN LARGE OVAL FRAMES OF JOHN AND MARY, SEVERAL PICTURES OF MARY IN LATER YEARS, AND PICTURES OF OLDER FAMILY MEMBERS I CAN'T IDENTIFY. THEY CAME FROM THE HOME PLACE WHEN UNCLE GRADY DIED YEARS AGO. I ALSO HAVE A BATTERED CARNEY BIBLE WITH THE LISTINGS ON JOHN TYLER'S CHILDREN. STORY AS TOLD BY JEROME SULLIVAN SR.:I SUPPOSE YOU HEARD THE ONE ABOUT THE YANKEE TROOPS COMING BY MAMMY CARNEY'S AND WANTING HER TO COOK THEM A MEAL. SHE SAID "I WON'T COOK FOR NO DAMN YANKEES". AND THEY HUNG HER UP TO SOME OPEN BEAMS AT THE HOME PLACE, BUT THEY LET HER DOWN BEFORE SHE WAS KILLED. SHE WAS, AS IS ALL THE FAMILY, REAL SPUNKY. GRANNY WENT TO A METHODIST CHURCH UP HER ONCE AND THE PASTOR TOLD HER HE DIDN'T LIKE THE SOUTH AND SHE TOLD HIM SHE DIDN'T LIKE THE NORTH AND NONE OF IT'S DAMN PREACHERS.

MARY F. WILLIS to John T. Carney, 27 Feb 1867, Sumner Co., TN
