      Murder and Suicide

The Murder "of Miss Winnie Haney and Suicide of George Quisenberry."

One of the most brutal and terrible tragedies that has ever occurred in this section of the country happened at the home of Geo. Quisenberry, a farmer living about twelve miles north of Buffalo, at ten o'clock Saturday morning, January 10, 1914, when he shot to death Miss Winnie Haney, an eighteen-year-old neighbor girl, and then, fired a 88-calibre ball into his he own brain, dying instantly. As soon as the terrible deed had been committed, the news was telephoned to Buffalo and Prosecuting attorney J.Miller, Coroner C. J. Lindsey and Sheriff Flanagin left immediately for the scene of trouble. When they arrived at the home of Quisenberry they found the families of the two victims almost prostrated with grief, but, surrounded with friends and neighbors who fain would have brought alleviation to the hearts almost broken with grief and humiliation over the terrible deed.

After listening to the statements of the family and neighbors who were acquainted with circumstances surrounding the shooting, Coroner Lindsey decided that an inquest was unnecessary.

As usual in such cases booze seems to have been at the bottom of the trouble, The evidence is that on Friday Mr. Quisenberry went over to Louisburg and returned under the influence of liquor and was abusive to the family that night and continued his drinking the next morning. When he returned home Friday evening, he found Miss Winnie and a younger sister, daughters of Wallace Haney, a neighbor, as guests of his family for the night.

Miss Winnie had previously assisted Mrs. Quisenberry for several weeks with her household duties and she and her sister felt welcome and safe as guests at the Quisenberry home. Later developments have proven, however, that Quisenberry was terribly infatuated with Miss Winnie, and it is thought that he intended to murder his wife on Friday night as he forced her to take a number of small tablets under threat of violence but which were not strong enough to accomplish the desired end.

Saturday morning, he made approaches toward Miss Winnie in a very ungentlemanly manner which were heard by her sister who said that she would call a neighbor in for protection and immediately left the house. He the threatened to kill the neighbor if he was called in and Mrs. Quisenberry, to pacify him in and his drunken notion, started from the home to warn her neighbor, Mr. Cox, not to enter when she met two other friends and neighbors who were passing by, Messrs. Melton and Jackson, who were asked to visit the Home, but warned to use caution. Approaching the home, they heard the piteous pleadings of the girl for her honor and safety and glancing in at the bedroom window saw the girl in the grip of Quisenberry, now thoroughly crazed by rum. They had not more than spied him until Quisenberry discovered their presence. They then turned from the window but had not moved many steps before two shots were heard and all was then quiet.

Entering the house, they found the farmer and the girl each with a bullet hole in the temple and with consciousness gone. The man had been thwarted in his dastardly purpose, and, crazed by passion and rum, sent the innocent girl, the object of his infatuation, into eternity and immediately followed. Quisenberry was about forty and years of age and was generally regarded as a pretty good citizen. He was industrious, and had a good little farm.
