    • Biography

Thomas Poor(e) IV was born in about 1721 in Henrico County, Virginia, son of Thomas Poore III and Susanna Gills.[1][2] He apparently lived in the part of Henrico County, Virginia, that became Goochland County in 1728, where he grew to manhood, and became a minister.[1]

Thomas was married before 1740 to an unidentified wife, and had children. No source for this statement has been found. It probably pertains to the marriage to Elizabeth Moseley.

Thomas Poore was married to Elizabeth Moseley in 1740 in St. James Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia.[3][4] Their children were:[5]

Mary Poor, born about 1740, died after Feb 1798;[5] married first 20 Nov 1755 to Zachariah Williams; married second after 1766 to George Thomas(s)on[5]
Elizabeth Poor, born about 1742, died after Feb 1798;[5] married 21 Jan 1763 to Zachariah Haden[5]
Susannah, born about 1744, died about 1819, married 22 Sep 1762 to James Scruggs[6]
Anne Poor, born about 1745, died after Feb 1798;[5] married 3 Nov 1763 to Stephen Lee (or did she marry Jno. Lee who received money from Thomas Poor's estate?)
Mildred Poor, born about 1746, died after Feb 1798; married Samuel Cosby
Jean "Jenny" Poor, born about 1754, died after 1798; married first on 18 Jan 1772 to Leonard George; married second on 1 Oct 1775 to Joseph Lambert
Lucy Poor, born 23 Dec 1756,[4] died after Feb 1798; married Obediah Smith
Judith Moseley Poor, born 29 Oct 1759,[7] died before 1797; married 6 Nov 1780 to Constant Perkins
William Poor, born 1 Nov 1765, died after 1802;[8] married 15 Aug 1785 to Judith Sampson[9]
Sarah Poor, born about 1766, died before 1816; married William Britt[5]
Thomas Poor, born 12 Jul 1768,[10] died 1838; married 14 Feb 1786 to Susanna Haden

The family lived in Goochland County, Virginia, where all his children were probably born. The Poor family apparently owned land In Louisa County and Powhattan County, Virginia, as Thomas' estate paid taxes in those counties.[11] They were the parents of 11 children, nine daughters and two sons.[2][12]One child, Judith, died young, without heirs.

Thomas wrote his will 09 Oct 1784, which was proved 17 and 18 Mar 1788 by witnesses Samuel Richardson and Jno Martin.[2] He was apparently fairly well-to-do from the inventory of his estate.[13] An additional division of the Estate of Thomas Poor was ordered 16 Oct 1797 in Goochland County, Virginia, probably after the death of his wife, Elisabeth. The final settlement 17 Sep 1798 lists all ten of his surviving children.[5]

Various notes and information about Thomas and/or Elizabeth:

In 1743 Thomas was an appraiser for the Estate of Thomas Robbinson of Goochland Co., Virginia: "p. 245 Inventory of Thomas Robbinson, dec'd, John Moseley, Adm'r., value L7/19/3 by John Smith, Thomas (T) Stone, and Thomas Poor 11 July 1743 Recorded 20 Sept. 1743 Account of sales of estate amounting to L11/11/1 20 Sept. 1743."

9 Oct 1744 - Goochland County Deed Book 4, pp 434-435: "Thomas POOR, SR. of HANOVER County for love and affection to loving son Thomas Poor, Jr. and wife Elizabeth of Goochland County... 200 acres in Goochland on north side of James River bounded by James George's land, Arthur Hopkins. Dated 9 October 1744. Witnesses: James George, Abraham Poor, Robert Estes, Jr. 16 Oct. 1744, Thomas Poor, Sr. acknowledged this deed which was ordered recorded. Susannah, his wife, privately examined, relinquished her right of dower in land." Source [L-05] \\ This land was given by Thomas' father to him & Elizabeth. The Abraham Poor mentioned as witness is Thomas' brother.

From 1751-1767 Thomas served St. James Parish, Goochland, Virginia as a processioner of land boundaries. Found in the St. James Northam Parish Vestry Book 1744-1850 are the following entries:

      Research Notes

A better source is needed for the marriage of Elizabeth Moseley and Thomas Poore.

Thomas Poor wrote a will in 1784, and died 1788. In the will he specified his estate was to be kept together until son William was age 21. The estate was divided in 1797, with final settlement 1798. Several of the supposed children are either incorrect or died without issue. Others have incorrect birth and/or death dates. Poor-270 William Poor - incorrect dates or wrong person Poor-262 Robert Robin Poor - not in final settlement Poor-798 Thomas Poor - incorrect dates, wife and children belong to his father Poor-249 George Poor - not in final settlement--had children Poore-520 Abraham Poore - not in final settlement--had children Watkins-1972 Mary Watkins - not in final settlement, wrong name Poor-265 Jewel Poor - not in final settlement Poore-193 Elizabeth Poore - wrong date if she is the right person Poor-267 Trudy Poor - not in final settlement Poor-263 Anne Poor - incorrect date Poor-269 Mary Poor - incorrect dates or wrong person Poor-86 Robert Poor - not in final settlement Poore-420 Mary Poor - wrong dates, in final settlement as Mary Thomas Poor-266 Mary Gardner Poor - wrong dates or wrong person, b. 1669

Therefore I am removing the children not listed in the final settlement. If any of the children removed are actually Thomas IV's children, please notify. Remember, if they died before their father, they left no heirs, or the heirs of the deceased children would appear with the living ones.

Thomas was born 1721 in Hanover Co., Virginia Colony80, and died 01 Feb 1788 in St. James Northam Parish, Goochland, Virginia81. He married Elizabeth Moseley about 1740 in Goochland Co., Virginia, daughter of JOHN MOSELEY and MARY NICHOLS. She was born 14 Jul 1725 in Middlesex Co., Virginia, and died 1801 in St. James Northam Parish, Goochland, Virginia.
