Notes - Sir Richard Williamson is said to be the ancestor of all the Virginia Williamson's. Richard first came to Virginia in 1638, but returned to England shortly thereafter. In 1641,he returned to Virginia for good. His 1641 passage was paid for by Ambrose Bennet. Settling in Isle of Wight County, Richard soon began acquiring property. He named the family home "Cobham Hall" after the home, in Kent, of Sir Joseph Williamson. The land was purchased in 1641.
Family:
Richard married Margaret 1614 -1618 in England. The children are often stated as born in the Isle of Wight, but NO CHILD born before 1641 could have been born in Isle of Wight. It is probable all the children were born in London, England. The children are:
1. Richard Williamson
2. James Williamson, 1621-1656
3. John Williamson
4. Dr. Robert Williamson, 1625-1670
5. Henry Williamson
Sources disagree regarding the wife of Richard Williamson. Some state she was Margaret Brown and others state she was Margaret Sherwood. It is known his wife's first name was Margaret, as a Margaret was named the widow and administrator of the estate of Richard Williamson, deceased, in a land transaction dated 21 September 1655. It is a last name that is in question. Margaret Sherwood's parentage is not reliable as one of the 9 children of Sir Richard Sherwood and Margaret Bandwyn. Of these 9 children, Margaret Sherwood is the only child who does NOT have an independent christening source and is not recognized by the parish.
