He was a man of good education, well versed in both the German and English languages, and attained a position of influence and prominence in the community. He was a carpenter by trade, following that occupation through the greater part of his life, engaging in many contracts. He migrated west of the Allegheny Mountains in 1837, coming to Pittsburg and residing on Liberty street, near the present site of Union Station. In 1848 he moved to Duquesne Borough, which later became the Eighth ward of Allegheny City, where he spent the remainder of his life. He served as burgess, and was three times elected justice of the peace. He was also German interpreter at the Allegheny county court. He was a man of strong religious convictions and a member of the Winebrenarian denomination. His political affiliations were with the Republican party, in the organization of which he took an active part.
