Notes |
- he daughter of Alexander Ogilvie 1st of Findlater married Walter Barclay of Gartly, who died in 1532. After his death, she then married James Gordon 1st of Lesmoir by 1546. Her second husband, James Gordon, did not die until June 1558.
If William Macintosh's wife was named 'Margaret' and the daughter of Alexander Ogilvie of that Ilk, it's impossible to see how Margaret Ogilvy's marriage to William Macintosh could fit into this timeline, since, as stated above, she was still William's wife in 1549, just before his death.
The problem may have arisen in a confusion of Christian names. 'Margaret', 'Mariot', 'Mary', 'Marion' and 'Marjory', for a variety of reasons linked to transcription where more than one language is in use (see Research Notes on Mariot le Chen), are often confused, especially within a family.
An example from another Ogilvy family may help clarify the matter. Sir Walter Ogilvy of Boyne and Christian Keith had two daughters: 'Margaret', married twice, first to John Stewart then to George Barclay; and 'Marjory' married to James Dunbar of Tarbat. Yet we still find, in papers of the Ogilvy family, 'Marjory' also named as 'Margaret':
"1555 October 24
Contract between Walter Ogilvy of Boyne kt and Margaret Ogilvy his daughter on one part, and James Dunbar of Terbert and James Dunbar, his son and apparent heir, on other part, whereby said Margaret is to marry said James younger, before next Easter, etc. Traces of 2 applied seals." (GD248/82/4)
It may be that the woman who married William Macintosh was the subject of a similar confusion
