    • BOOK - Tomlinson : from Virginia (1749) to Kentucky,Tennessee, Illinois, Missouri, Texas and way beyond by Mildren Marcelyn Tomlinson Ireland

William Tomlinson was born circa 1725. It is known that he journeyed with Doctor Thomas Walker in 1749 as an employee of the Loyal Land Company to locate a boundary for 800,000 acres in the western reaches of Virginia suitable for settlement. Fortunately Doctor Walker kept a journal recording each day's progress and events. A complete copy of the journal may be obtained from the Dr. Thomas Walker State Historic Site, HC 83, Box 868, Barbourville, Ky 409006-9603. At this site a replica of the cabin built in 1749 has become the center of a state park.

Excerpts pertaining to Tomlinson From the diary follows: "Having, on the 12th day of December last, been employed for a certain consideration to go to the Westward in order to discover a proper Place for a Settlement, I left my house on the Sixth day of March at 10 o'clock, 1749-50, in company with Ambrose Powell, William Tomlinson, Colby Chew, Henry Lawless, and John Hughs. Each man had a horse and we had two to carry the baggage...

April 23. Having carried our baggage over in the Bark Canoe, and swam our horses, we all crossed the River. Then Ambrose Powell, Colby Chew, and I departed leaving the others (William Tomlinson, Henry Lawless and John Hughes) to provide and salt some bear, build a house, and plant some peach-stones and corn...

May 5th. We got to Tomlinson's River, which is about the same size of Powell's River, and I cut my name on a beech, that stands on the North Side of the River. Here is plenty of coal in the south bank opposite to our Camp....

June 28th...It continued raining till noon, and we set off as soon as it ceased and went down the branch..we lay on the New River just below the mouth of the Greenbryer. Powell, Tomlinson and myself striped and went into the New River to try if we could wade over any place. After some time having found a place, we rcturn'd and took such things as would take damage by water on our shoulders and waded over, leading our horses. The bottom is very uneven, the rocks are very slippery and the current is very strong most of the way, We camped in the low ground opposite of the mouth of the Green Dryer...

July 13th. 1. got home about noon. We killed in the journey 13 buffaloes, 8 elks, 53 bears, 20 deers, 4 wild geese, about 150 turkeys, besides small game. We might have killed three times as much meat, if we had wanted it."
