Notes - In 1776, although only 15 years of age, he was drafted into the Brish Army and was among the Hessians sold to the English and sent to America to assist in subduing the American colonists. He did not favor the English cause and soon deserted, but was captured and sentenced to be executed. By some oversight, his name was not called. He again deserted, was caught, and again sentenced to death, but on account of his extreme youth was pardoned.
December 25, 1776, he deserted the third time, shooting an English officer in his effort to escape. Arming himself with the sword of the slain man he made his way to the Continental Army, enlisted under General Washington in the field, and served the entire Revolutionary War.
He also took part in the War of 1812, enlisting from Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, was wounded and lost a leg.
