Notes - Born in Ireland and immigrated to PA about 1738. He married first (name of wife has been lost) and all children were by her. He moved to NC prior to 1760. He married Martha Clark in Gaston County, NC 1760.
See email below, but John Clark was the second husband of Martha Ann Nisbet. Son Samuel Pickens was co-admin of the John Falls estate linking John Falls to a later marriage to Martha after 2nd marriage to John Clark.
Email to Terry McLean, dated 10 Jul 2002
Text: ...Gen Elijah CLARK (1733-1799) of Rev. War fame was the son of John CLARK (c1689-1761) of NC who settled in Anson Co. NC in the early 1740's. It was this John CLARK who married widow Martha NESBIT PICKENS, (widow od Israel PICKENS who died in 1749) probably in late 1756 or early 1757. John CLARK, who had been married at least twice before marrying Martha, had recently lost his second wife, Mary, whose last name I think was GIBSON. Martha had a son by John CLARK who was named Gibson CLARK. Gibson was born in 1760 and he was 27 years younger than his half-brother, Elijah. So, if you wanted proof that Martha was not the mother of most (perhaps all) of John FALLS children, the fact that she gave birth in 1760 suggests that she was probably born after 1720. I think Martha was the mother of all of Israel PICKENS' children except the eldest son, William, who was born in 1728. She definitely was the mother of Samuel, Rebecca and Hannah, who were Isreal's three youngest children, and probably was the mother of Margaret PICKENS WALKUP who was born in 1739.
I know that Martha survived John FALLS who died in 1776, Her son, Samuel PICKENS, was one of those providing surety bond when Martha was named co-administrix of the John FALLS estate by the Mecklenburg Co. Court. But do not know what happened to Martha after 1776. Gibson CLARK, at some point (possibly when John FALLS died) went to live with his half-brother Elijah CLARK in Georgia and served under his brother in the Rev. War. He married Susannah PHILLIPS in 1784 and migrated west to settle along Bayou Pierre in what would later become Claiborne Co., MS.
John CLARK was named the first commander of the Anson Co. militia in 1748 and served as commander until 1753. Capt. Andrew PICKENS Sr. was one of officers commanded by Col. CLARK in 1753 and I think three of Andrew's sons were also in the militia company commanded by Andrew. This may be how John CLARK became acquainted with Martha PICKENS. However, I also recall that about 1750 John CLARK gifted some land to three men, including Andrew PICKENS, Sr., on which to build the first Anson Co. Courthouse.
