Notes - John Stewart succeeded his father and became the 2nd Earl of Atholl
This profile is part of the Stewart Name Study.
John Stewart, 2nd Earl of Atholl, the son and heir of John Stewart, Knt., 1st Earl of Atholl, and his second wife, Eleanor Sinclair,[1][2][3] His date and place of birth are unknown. His parents married before 19 April 1475,[1] so his birthdate is estimated as after 1475.
John succeeded as the 2nd Earl of Atholl in 1512.[2]
John married Janet, third daughter of Archibald Campbell, 2nd Earl of Argyll,[2][4] and Elizabeth, first daughter of John Stewart, 1st Earl of Lennox.[2][3] The date and place of their marriage is unknown. They had children:
John, 3rd Earl of Atholl,[4] only son and heir, born 6 October 1507, died 1542, married first to Grizel Rattray and second to Jean Forbes;[2] he had eight children with his first wife.[3]
Janet, married first about 1520, to Alexander Gordon, second to Sir Hugh Kennedy, third to Henry Stewart, and fourth to Patrick, Lord Ruthven.[3][4]
Helen, married first to John, 5th Lord Lindsay of the Byres, second to Thomas Moncur[4] or Morieux; she died ca. 1577.[3]
Elizabeth, married Colin or Kenneth Mackenzie of Kintall.[3][4]
Isabel, married James Herine or Herring of Lethendy.[3][4]
John died in 1521, although it is often said that he died 9 September 1513 in the battle of Flodden.[2][4] His widow died about 2 February 1545/6.[2]
His son became Earl of Atholl on 3 May 1522,[2] but John was dead by 4 Jan 1521/2, when the Chancery issued the precept.[4]
Research Notes
Jean Stewart was originally listed in the biography of this profile as a daughter of John Stewart, 2nd earl of Atholl, and Janet Campbell. She has now been placed instead as a daughter of John Stewart, 1st earl of Atholl, and Eleanor Sinclair. For a further explanation, please see the Research Note here.
