  Thomas Reade (George) married Lucy Gwynn, daughter of Edmond Gwynn, and had eleven children, of whom seven are known: I. Thomas Reade, b. 1707; d.s.p. 17 April, 1730. II. John Reade. Married, 2 Feb., 1738, Frances Yates. III. Mildred Reade. Married Philip Rootes. (Chapter IV.) IV. Mary Reade. Married Mordecai Throckmorton. V. Lucy Reade. Married Roger Dixon. VI. Ann Reade. Married Mathew Pate. VII. Clement Reade, founder of the Lunenberg family. Thomas Reade served as a captain of militia and was a resident of Ware Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia. He owned 2,400 acres of land in Gloucester County in 1704; 400 acres lying in Ware Parish and 2,000 acres lying in Petsworth Parish. His date of birth has been given as 1649 by some researchers, but this is incorrect. He was still a minor when his mother, Elizabeth (Martiau) Reade, wrote her will, February, 1685/6. He has been confused with another Thomas Reade who belonged to an earlier generation and whose relationship, if any, to this family is unknown. Traditionally, Captain Thomas Reade and his wife, Lucy (Gwyn) Reade are said to have had eleven children, but proof only exists to establish the following: Thomas, John, Joyce, Lucy, Joyce, Mary, Mildred, Clement, Ann and Sarah. For more on this family, please see Dorman, John Frederick. Adventurers of Purse and Person, 4th edition, volume 2, page 509. Thomas Reade was born about 1665 in Ware Parish, Gloucester County, VA. He was the son of Col. (Gov) George Esq. Reade (1608-1671) and Elizabeth Martiau Reade (1625-1686). His mother, Elizabeth Martiau Reade, wrote her will in 1685, and she described Thomas as underage at that time. Thomas married Lucy Bernard Gwynn in Dec. 1694 at Albington Parish, Gloucester, Virginia. Lucy was the daughter of Dr Edmund Gwynn (1645-1683) and Lucy Bernard Gwynn (1648-1675). Thomas died after 10 March 1734 in Gloucester County, Virginia, when records show that he had 396 acres of land surveyed. See: "Historical Southern Families, Vol. 2" by John Bennett Boddie.
