Notes - Biography
Phineas Cox was born in October 1764. Phineas is a close yDNA match to Samuel Cox (b. 1770) of Halifax County, Virginia. Phineas passed away in 1842. [1]
His father is Samuel Cox and mother is Sarah Coleman whom his father married in May 1764.
Phineas Cox, per his Revolutionary War Pension papers, was born in Halifax County, Virginia on October 10, 1764. Phineas states in his affidavit the birth date was recorded in his father's bible, which Phineas believed to be in the possession of his brother "out west".
Phineas joined the American forces while long hunting on the Holstein. He was a resident of Henry County, Virginia at the time of enlistment and traveled by boat to Illinois, serving at O Post, caring for the pack horses. Phineas was about 14 years old when he joined with George Rogers Clark in March 1779, and served until 1780.
Shortly after discharge, Phineas moved to Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, where he had been granted 640 acres for his service. Unfortunately, Phineas was too young to claim this land. However, it was here that Phineas meet Barbara Stump, daughter of prominent citizen and founder of Nashville, Frederick Stump, and per Barbara's Revolutionary War Widow's pension application, the two were married about 1783, at Fort Nashboro, "before there was much government" leaving no record of the marriage.
By 1791, Phineas and John Cox, a believed brother to Phineas, are surveyors for E. M. Covington, and are now residing in Logan/Warren County, Kentucky. Phineas owns land on Chism Creek and can be found on tax lists and census records.
Phineas was elected to the Kentucky State legislature in 1804 from Warren County and served under Governor Christopher Greenup, naming one of his sons after the Governor.
It was here that Phineas and Barbara raised their family of 12 children, 5 sons and 7 daughters, and helped shape the Warren County, Kentucky area.
Phineas died May 18, 1842, leaving no will, but an extensive estate record has been found, 230 plus pages.
Barbary Stump Cox was granted an additional 160 acres as her Widow's Pension. Barbary died September 7, 1856, and she and Phineas are buried together on the Chism Creek Property, Warren County, Kentucky.
Y-DNA from 14 separate individuals have linked Phineas 1764-1742, John 1758-1832, Samuel, Jr. 1760-1824, Fulker 1759-1840, and descendants of Jacob Cox 1723/1725-1809, to Phillip Cox 1677-1736 and Dorcas Hull 1685-1753. We believe Phineas' father may have been Samuel Cox 1725/1729-?. This Samuel is most likely a brother to Jacob Cox 1723/1725-1809, and both the sons of John Cox 1703-1767 and Mary (Taylor) 1705-?. John Cox 1703-1767, the son of Phillip Cox and Dorcas Hull, per a family Bible belonging to Dorcas' mother Jerusha Hitchcock.
At the time of his death, Phineas estate was worth in excess of $10,000.00, much of which were slaves. His son (James) Frederick Cox was named administrator.
