  • Notes
    • John Dane apparently came to Ipswich about 1635 with his wife Francis Bowyer and their children: Francis Dane, Elizabeth Dane, and John Dane Jr. John is listed in the book, "Ipswich in the Massachusetts Bay Colony," as one of the earliest settlers. This book can be found online in its entirety at https://archive.org/stream/ipswichinmassach00water#page/11/mode/2up. He is sometimes listed as John Dane, Sr. to distinguish him from his son of the same name.

After the death of his first wife, John Dane Sr. married Annis (also known as Agnes or Anne (Bayford) Chandler), widow of William Chandler. Their marriage was recorded in Roxbury vital records in 1643. In 1649, John Dane Sr. was granted ownership of the homestead of William Chandler. Annis survived John and married as her third husband Deacon John Paramenter.

John Dane was born about 1587 in Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire County, England. He married about 1608 Frances Bowyer who died about 1641. Frances was probably the daughter of Thomas and Margaret Bowyer based on certain "benefactions" recorded for the Parish of Bishop's Stortford. "John Dane, by deed dated 21st July 1630, in consideration of the Parish haveing been at great charge in relieving Margaret his mother-in-law, the wife of Thomas Bowyer, after the death of her husband, and conveyed a parcel of ground taken out of a great yard belonging to John Dane, with a herenail ther or booth, and half part of a well lying in Hockerill Street, for the benefit of the chief inhabitants of this Parish forever."

Frances came with her husband and children to New England and died soon after their arrival.

The earliest grant of land to John was on April 9, 1639, but it appears this land had been occupied by them earlier. The grant was for a one acre lot "lying in the street called the west ens.." on the north side of the Ipswich River and adjoining the lot of Robert Muzzey." He had a six-acre planting lot "beyond the reach of Ready Marsh," and four more acres of planting ground within the common fence. In October, 1649, John petitioned the General court that the house and lands belonging to his second's wife's first husband, William Chandler, might be made over to him for he had "paid more debt of Chand'l than ye house and land was worth, & also brought up ye children of Chandler w'ch have been chargeable to him." On February 2,165/66 he made a deed of gift to "his dear and loving wife Annis Dane.." of all the housing and lands that had belonged to her first husband, "reserving the vse of it in my owne hands vntill my death...Provided that vpon the death of the sajd Annid or vpon the dispossal of the sajd housing & land shall stand bound for the payment of tenn pounds..." He was a commoner and was made freeman at Ipswich on June 2, 1641. He died September, 1658, in Roxbury, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.

John Dane was grandfather of Abigal Dane, who was tried and condemned as a witch during the 1692 Salem Witch Trials. Abigal was the daughter of Francis Dane and Elizabeth Ingalls and the wife of Francis II Faulkner. Abigal Dane Faulkner's two daughters were also tried and condemned for witchcraft.

In a deed dated 1630, John mentioned his mother-in-law Margaret, wife of Thomas Bowyer. In 1635 "Granted to Henry Wilkinson by the company of freeman three acres of planting ground on the south syde the Towne River. Also hee is possessed of three acres adjoyning unto the same, the which latter three acres hee bought of Robert Hayes, and was granted unto ye sayde Robert Hayes at the same tyme the whole six acres, having a planting lott of Robert Cross on the East, and a house lott of John Dayne's on the West, also on the same syde a planting lott of William Wildes, buting upon the North end upon the river. Also three acres of planting ground lying upon Sogamore Hill, having Andrew Story's lott on the Southeast, and Michaell Williamson's lott on the Northeast." In 1639 John Dane was granted a house lot in Ipswich. On April 9 1639 a one acre house-lot lying in the street called the West end, on the north side of the Ipswich River and adjoining the lot of Robert Muzzey, 6 acres of planting ground beyond the reedy Marsh, and four more acres of planting ground within the common fence in Ipswich was granted to "John Deane the elder". "Vpon the sevth day of the seveth month (September) in 1658" John Dane prepared his will "in his own hand" "- To son John Dane, ten pounds out of my now dwelling house, which will appear in deed, dated 2d. feberi in fift one - To son Francis my wood lot, about two & twentie ackers, mor or les, as it doth appeer in Town-book. - To dafter Elizabeth How, a black cow now att Andiver in the hand of Georg Abet to he deliuered to her after me deseas emediately. - To son John Dane, on feather bede & on feather boster & two fether pillows & a yellow rugg, & also a pewter platter. - To son Francis, on great ketle, also on flaxen sheet & a saser. - To Dafter Elizabeth How, a litl kittle, & on pewter candlestick. - To son Frances, my old black cow, now at Roxburie, & my bible. - To louing wiff Anie, whom I mak sooll exceekitrix all my moveable goods that is not expresed. In witness herr vnto I hav set my hand this seueth day of the seveth month 58. By me /signed John Dane/ At a county court held at Boston 16 Oct 1658, Mr John Johnson deposed that he saw Jno Dane sign & publish it as his last will, &c, Edward Rawson Recordr. On September 14, 1658 John "was buried" in Roxbury. On October 16, 1659 John's will was proved. In November 1672 Annis prepared her will and bequeathed "to my sons and daughters by my former husbands…John, Thomas and William Chandler and married daughters, Hannah Abbot and Sarah Cleaves…the estate left me by my husband, John Dane." On March 17, 1683 "Old Mother Parminter, a blessed saint, died" at Roxbury. (Much of the above quoted from a posting on ancestry.com: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/4931072/person/-1521605504/storyx/abdb06cf-cd2d-45c5-af06-d28d19afa634?src=search).

John was the Son of William and Susanne Dane, and Father of Elizabeth Howe; John Dane; Reverend Francis Dane and Mary Dane.

I haven't been able to find a lot of original vital records for John, except the following:
The vital records of Roxbury list his marriage to Ann Chandler July 2, 1643.
The vital records of Roxbury also list his death: John Dane, 14 September, 1658.
He is mentioned briefly in the book, "The Town of Roxbury: Its Memorable Persons and Places, Its History and ..."
      by Francis Samuel Drake.

There is a very interesting blog on the internet that details some of the Dane's family connections to the Salem Witch Trials: See http://danegenealogy.blogspot.com/2012/08/danes-in-salem-witch-trials.html. John Sr. died before the witch hysteria took hold, but his son Francis was at one of the centers of the firestorm, luckily on the sane side.

See also this online article: http://andover.essexcountyma.net/chaseries/dane.html.

Be careful when reviewing these files. Many past researchers have mistaken John Dane (Sr.) and his son of the same name, who was apparently a "surgeon" of some kind.
