Notes - Biography
U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Charles Carter was a Virginia colonist.
Col. Charles Carter of Cleve
Origin
Charles was born about 1707 at Corotoman Plantation, Lancaster County, Virginia, the home of his father, to Robert "King" Carter, a land baron and member of the governor's Council, and Elizabeth (Landon) Carter.[1] It was the second marriage of both his parents.[1]
Birth date 1707 is a guess, based on the date of his first marriage.
Younger Years
Charles Carter was educated in England and returned to Virginia in 1724, after which he moved to one of his father's estates in Middlesex County. He later purchased a King George County plantation known as Cleve. (He was often referred to as Charles Carter of Cleve to distinguish him from relatives of the same name.)
Marriages
Charles married three times.
He married in 1728, as his 1st, to Mary Walker.[2]
He married December 25, 1741 in Westover Parish, Charles City Co, as his 2nd, to Anne Byrd.[2]
He married in 1763, as his 3rd, to Lucy Taliaferro.[2]
